A Rich World of Learning: The First Year in a Steiner School
Catherine Pilko is an experienced Kindergarten teacher in Sydney and in this podcast she shares the beautiful first year in a Steiner school that children enjoy in Kindergarten (NSW, ACT), Prep (Qld, Vic, Tas), Reception (SA), Pre-primary (WA) and Transition (NT). Catherine takes us through a typical day, showing the calm, ordered and productive routines that provide a nourishing start to the child’s life at school.  It’s a rich world of learning from everyday life where English, Maths, and even Science outcomes are embedded in practical activities that build independence and personal competence. Self directed play has a central place and Catherine shares touching and amusing stories of the powerful creativity that children can demonstrate when they are allowed a safe and natural play environment. It’s all a profoundly social and character-building foundation to a child’s school journey.   For more information about Steiner education: https://steinereducation.edu.au/ For more information about locations and contact details of Steiner schools: https://steinereducation.edu.au/schools/  Teacher education and professional learning: https://steinereducation.edu.au/events/  Working in a Steiner school: https://steinereducation.edu.au/jobs/#vacancies  Our facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/steinereducationaustralia Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/steinereducationaustralia/  The beautifully performed theme music ‘Libertango’ is played by Esther Abrami and Alexandra Whittingham.   Esther’s website: https://www.estherabrami.com/  Alexandra’s website: https://www.alexandrawhittingham.com/ Podcast produced by: https://piccolopodcasts.com.au/

Gym for the Soul: The Inner World of Eurythmy
Emily Collett teaches Eurythmy at two Steiner schools in Sydney. Her own education included a Major Project on Eurythmy in Year 12, but it after an Honours degree in International Studies at Macquarie University that she committed to a full professional Eurythmy training in Germany. Three years of performing across stages and schools internationally followed, before she returned to Australia to become a qualified teacher. Emily reflects on the new art form of Eurythmy and its powerful ability to embody the inner moods of words and music in movement and gesture. In school, students gain inner capacities of coordination, collaboration and concentration. In performance, audiences move inwardly to the beauty and artistry of the words and music as revealed by the Eurythmists on stage. In short, Emily calls it “gym for the soul”. From Addiction to Actively Managing: Children and Screens
Mary Heard returns to Steiner Voices to discuss screens and how to protect children from the dangers of their addictive use. Although the evidence of the negative impact that screen use has on young people is well established, parents can still feel they are swimming against the tide in a society where screen use for children is so widespread. Screens have an inherently addictive quality designed into them, and Steiner schools have always advised parents to first restrict and then manage their children’s use of phones and digital devices. Mary outlines useful strategies that families take to actively manage screen use, so children can grow up using screens in a responsible and intentional manner. Mary is a long term parent in Steiner schools, and is now a parent educator working with the program Simplicity Parenting: her website has many valuable resources for further reference: maryheardsimplicityparenting.com . The Magic of Making Things: Educating the Will
Evan Sanders is Design and Technology teacher at Glenaeon Rudolf Steiner School in Sydney. He teaches the artisan subjects where students produce useful and beautiful objects which are so emblematic of Steiner schools. A former Steiner student himself, he values the learning that goes into working with the many different materials in the Steiner curriculum at different ages, from wool, textiles and clay in primary school to wood, metal, glass, stone and more in high school. For Evan, making things is not just about making things. It is also a parable about human development, human resilience and human creativity. When a student makes a useful and beautiful object, they are also making themselves.  For more information about Steiner education: https://steinereducation.edu.au/ For more information about locations and contact details of Steiner schools: https://steinereducation.edu.au/schools/  Teacher education and professional learning: https://steinereducation.edu.au/events/  Working in a Steiner school: https://steinereducation.edu.au/jobs/#vacancies  Our facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/steinereducationaustralia Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/steinereducationaustralia/  The beautifully performed theme music ‘Libertango’ is played by Esther Abrami and Alexandra Whittingham.   Esther’s website: https://www.estherabrami.com/  Alexandra’s website: https://www.alexandrawhittingham.com/ Podcast produced by: https://piccolopodcasts.com.au/

Steiner in the Centre: “The feeling, the aesthetics, the calm”
Megan Hatton has lived and worked in Central Australia for nearly 30 years, becoming fluent in Pitjantjatjara language and teaching in a bilingual school in an Aboriginal community 250 kilometres west of Alice Springs. On moving “to town” with a baby, she began teaching in all the schools of Alice Springs, and was finally drawn to the Alice Springs Steiner school as a parent and teacher for a number of reasons which she summarises as “the feeling, the aesthetics, the calm”. Megan trained in Steiner education and has completed two cycles as a class teacher before stepping up to a leadership role in the school. She tells her story of being drawn to the Centre after growing up in the suburbs of Sydney and travelling the world. Now, having experienced the powerful healing influence that Steiner education can be in the classroom, she looks forward to exploring the role she can play in helping heal trauma more widely, and particularly the intergenerational trauma in her local community. Pioneering Parents: “Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained!”
What do you do when your eldest daughter comes home at the end of Year 4 and says “I’m not going back!” Bill Wood was training teachers as a Lecturer in the Philosophy of Education when he faced this situation. He and wife Rosemary explored the options and they took a risk in enrolling daughter Joanna in one of the early classes at Mt Barker Waldorf School, a class that became the pioneering class of the high school. It was a risk, but they took the view “Nothing ventured, nothing gained”. So Joanna was in the first class to complete the high school, went on to graduate in Medicine with Honours and is today an Emergency Physician, with her own three children attending the school. In this episode Bill tells this family story and how he was impressed with the way narrative and music combined with main lesson content to create a coherent and rigorous learning environment for a very able child. Music of the Spheres: From Perth to Bali and Beyond
Paul Lawrence is an Australian teacher and musician who for the past three years has been an educational leader of the Madu Waldorf School in Ubud, Bali. But Paul’s connection with Bali started a long time before this appointment. He tells a fascinating story that begins with his first life changing experience as a fifteen year old when he encountered Balinese culture for the first time. His life since then has been bound up with both Bali and with music. As a Steiner parent with his wife Nicole, Paul raised two boys and was a founding parent of the Silver Tree Steiner school in the Perth Hills. As a teacher Paul taught at the Perth Waldorf School for many years, and as a musician, he has widely explored world music traditions. His forthcoming book, Music of the Spheres: A Listener’s Guide takes the reader through the door that music provides into other, higher realms. From Weird to Wonderful: A Journey in Steiner Education
Eliza Allan grew up in Denmark, Western Australia near Golden Hill Steiner School, and from a distance, she thought the school was a bit weird: today she is the school’s Principal. Her journey from cynicism to commitment has taken her through some fascinating highways and byways: years teaching English in Indonesia, leadership roles in remote schools in the Kimberlys, and a year long journey, on her own with her 10 year old daughter, trekking the 5,330 km Bicentennial National Trail along the Great Dividing Range, on a horse and two donkeys, a trek which produced her book Donkey Dreaming.   The golden thread running through Eliza’s story began when a health professional suggested Steiner education for her daughter. That advice led to interest, then background research and then commitment as she became first a Steiner parent and then a Steiner teacher. Today she leads the school she once saw as weird into its next stage of growth, extending the high school right up to Year 12. Here is Eliza’s journey in Steiner Education. Steiner X: Building a School, Building a Garden, Building Community
What’s it like being a founding student in a new school being built classroom by classroom? Do you have memories of deficit or an absence of facilities? Well, no! Inger Boerema was one of the founding children at the Willunga Waldorf School south of Adelaide, and her memories are all of a rich childhood filled with imagination, play and a joyful community. Her Year 12 Project took these qualities to another level in her construction of a creative garden at the school, a year long undertaking where she developed skills in artistic design, construction and community building, as well as the life-long character strengths of self-confidence and advocacy. After a gap year working with marginalised communities in Ethiopia, she completed two university degrees and now works to develop the “circular economy” in local government in Melbourne. Inger is a parent in a Steiner school, and as a Board member she is happy seeing her own children enjoy their education as much as she did, while she continues her life work in building community. Steiner X, Y and Z: The formation of a lifelong learner
Marcus Pater is a Steiner X, Y and Z: he is a graduate of Lorien Novalis School for Rudolf Steiner Education, Dural, Sydney, and is now both a teacher in the high school there and also a parent. In between he trained at Queensland University of Technology in Acting and worked for over 12 years in professional theatre, before returning to his former school as a parent and then teacher. He looks back with fond memories on the highlights of his education that shaped who he is today: the class plays, the class trips, the music program and a love of Nature. Meeting Infinity: Seeing the World Differently
Sophia Montefiore is Senior High School Coordinator at the Newcastle Waldorf School. As well as teaching across numbers of subjects, Sophia is an artist, published illustrator and more recently a teacher of Projective Geometry, a discipline that blends the rigour of Mathematics with the beauty of Art. In this episode she discusses her work and speaks about the power of this subject to change how we see the world: by expanding our awareness out to Infinity and back, we learn to see the profound connections that underlie our existence. As a Main Lesson in Year 11, Projective Geometry opens the doors of perception for students to see the interconnectedness and beauty of our material, and non-material worlds.  You can explore Sophia’s work here: < https://sophiaartperspectives.com.au/ >. “What’s in it for dads? The journey of a Steiner parent”
Malcolm Day is an architect and builder (and happy labourer!) and a long term Steiner dad. He and his wife between them have put five children through two Steiner schools in Sydney. Malcolm has thought deeply about his family’s journey in Steiner education, and here he tells his children’s very diverse stories, their individual learning and later careers, and his learning as a parent. Lyres and Levers: The Shaping of a Software Engineer
The Steiner X Series featuring former students. Max Chuquimia is a professional software engineer, working on mobile applications and AI. He credits his Steiner education with many offerings that helped shape his approach to work, and life. He didn’t have access to digital devices as a child, yet when he did in early adolescence, he brought an enquiring and practical attitude that made him an active manager of technology, not just a passive consumer. Geometry gave him an inner visual sense of shape and design, one that informs his daily work in coding and programming. Learning the lyre laid a foundation in music that continued into adult life. Listen to Max’s story and hear how lyres and music, Geometry and levers in mechanics, all contributed to the successful shaping of this Steiner educated software engineer. She found both, and putting her Californian training as a Steiner teacher to good use, she recently completed a cycle of eight years as a primary Class Teacher. In this episode she reflects on what the highlights have been for her in this educational journey that is unique to Steiner schools. “A Rich Toolbox of Approaches”: Steiner education and the roots of creativity.
Dr Jonathan Spreer is Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University of Sydney. He was entirely educated at a Steiner school, the Uhlandshohe Waldorf School in Stuttgart, Germany, which is the very first Steiner school in the world founded by Rudolf Steiner himself and still going strong 100 years later. Jonathan tells his story and reflects on some of the things from his school education that have shaped him as a person and a professional: wood crafts, numbers, music, the arts, all of which gave him “a rich toolbox of approaches” to support his creativity as a mathematician. Teacher as Story Teller
Meet Emily Watts, a young teacher who has recently completed her first year in a Steiner Class Teacher cycle. In this episode she takes us inside her classroom and shares the rhythm of her day with the children. A highlight for her is telling a story every day, a unique feature of a Steiner classroom, one that transforms the role of teacher from being just a deliverer of the formal curriculum to creating a living presence in the imagination of the child. How did a dentist help a parent choose a Steiner education?
In this episode of Steiner Y, you are going to meet parent Mary Heard and hear of her journey as a parent in Steiner schools, started by a comment from a dentist, a fascinating story of both education and self healing. Mary not only found an education that nurtured her two children throughout their schooling, but she also found a community and an approach to life that nurtured her personally as well. Mary now works with these principles in supporting parents as a Simplicity Parenting coach, providing advice and inner nourishment for parents on their child rearing journey.
