Asian Games 2023: Indian womens hockey team storm into semis after thrashing Hong Kong 13-0
Experienced striker Vandana Katariya, vice-captain Deep Grace Ekka and Deepika slammed a hat-trick each as India stormed into the semifinals of the women's hockey competition at the Asian Games with a 13-0 drubbing of Hong Kong in their final pool match here on Tuesday. Vandana (2nd, 16th, 48th minutes) scored three field goals, while Deep Grace (11th, 34th, 42nd) converted three penalty corners for India. Deepika (4th, 54th, 58th) was not to be left behind as she also emulated the feat of her senior teammates in India's rout of Hong Kong. Sangita Kumari (27th, 55th), Monika (7th) and Navneet Kaur (58th) also registered their names on the scoresheet. India are on top of Pool A with 10 points from four games and have much superior goal difference than second-placed side South Korea who have seven points with a match in hand. South Korea take on Malaysia in their final group league match later on Tuesday. Two teams from each pool qualify for the semifinals. It was a complete domination from the Indians as they toyed with Hong Kong's defence from the word go to pump in six goals in the first two quarters and seven more after half-time. It took India just two minutes to surge ahead when Vandana found the net from Navneet Kaur's pass. The Indians soon earned back-to-back penalty corners but wasted the chances as Hong Kong defended bravely. India doubled their lead from a quick counter-attack through Deepika, who found the net from Vandana's assist. It was raining goals as Monika and Deep Grace scored two more in quick succession to hand India 4-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. A minute into the second quarter, Vandana scored her second with a tomahawk from edge of the circle. Three minutes from half-time, Sangita tapped in Monika's pass as India enjoyed a comfortable 6-0 lead at the break. The trend continued after the change of ends as India's relentless pressure resulted in seven more goals. Deep Grace converted two penalty corners in the third quarter to complete her hat-trick. Vandana followed suit with another tomahawk goal to bring up her hat-trick. Deepika then converted two penalty corners with scorching flicks to match her senior teammates. In between, Sangita and Navneet also found the net once each. India will face the second-placed team of Pool B in the semifinals on Thursday. Saudi Arabias Al Ittihads AFC Champions League game in Iran cancelled due to Soleimani statue: Reports
Saudi Arabia's Al Ittihad refused to play a match in Iran on Monday because of the presence of a statue of a slain Iranian general placed on the sideline, according to Saudi state media. Al Ittihad and their star striker Karim Benzema were scheduled to play Iran's Sepahan in the AFC Champions League, one of several matches made possible by a recent diplomatic rapprochement between the longtime Middle East rivals. But the Saudi team did not take to the field because of a bust of Gen. Qassem Soleimani, who commanded Iran's elite Quds Force before he was killed in a U.S. drone strike in neighboring Iraq in January 2020, and other political banners, Saudi Arabia's Al Ekhbariya TV reported. Soleimani was seen as playing a key role in arming, training and leading armed groups across the region, including fighters from the Houthi rebel group in Yemen. Saudi Arabia has been at war with Iran-aligned rebels in Yemen since 2015. The AFC Champions League said the Group C match was cancelled “due to unanticipated and unforeseen circumstances," without elaborating. “The AFC reiterates its commitment towards ensuring the safety and security of the players, match officials, spectators, and all stakeholders involved. This matter will now be referred to the relevant committees,” it said in a statement. There was no official comment from Saudi Arabia or Iran. Iran's ruling clerics and their supporters hail Soleimani as a hero because of his leading role in military operations against the United States, the Islamic State group and other perceived enemies. Iran launched a barrage of missiles at U.S. bases in Iraq after he was killed, and has vowed to take further actions to avenge his death. As well as the insurgents in Yemen, Soleimani also aided Shiite militias in Iraq, the Lebanese Hezbollah, and fighters in Syria and the Palestinian territories. Western nations considered Soleimani a terrorist who had sown instability across the region. Also read: Uncertainty over Virat Kohli's availability for practice match against Netherlands

The medal rush continued for India in athletics on Monday, with Parul Chaudhary and Priti winning silver and bronze in the women's 3000m Steeplechase event. The Indian duo, along with the runners from Bahrain, were clearly way ahead of the competition in the event. While Bahrain's Winfred Yavi, the reigning World Champion, set a new Games record to take the Gold, Parul finished 9 seconds behind her to take the silver. India's Priti, who was fourth for most of the race, produced an exceptional sprint towards the end to overtake Bahrain's second runner, Tigest Mekonen, to take the bronze. Asian Games 2023: Indian archers have the perfect day in all 6 team events to qualify for quarterfinals
Indian archers showed tenacity and authority in equal measure to storm into the quarterfinals in all six team events of the Asian Games here on Monday. The Indians played five team elimination rounds and dropped just one set on the way to their respective quarterfinal matches. India have got a bye into the quarters by virtue of topping the qualifications in the women's compound team event. First, it was the top-seeded compound mixed team of Ojas Deotale and Jyothi Surekha Vennam, who showed the way as they dropped just one point from 16 arrows to eliminate UAE's Amna Alawadhi and Mohammed Binamro 159-151. The duo will take on formidable Malaysia (No. 8 seed) in the quarters, and thereafter, they should have an easy draw till the final. Then, the Indian recurve mixed pair duo of Atanu Das and Ankita Bhakat were at their resilient best and overcame a first-set deficit to defeat Malaysia in a three-setter. The fifth-seeded Indian duo of Das and Ankita rallied to beat the Malaysian team of Syaqiera Binti Mashayikh and Muhamad Zarif Syahir Bin Zolkepeli 6-2 (39-38, 37-36, 39-33). The Malaysia pair enjoyed a 2-0 lead with three 10s including one X in the first set. But, the experienced Indian duo bounced back with two 10s and went on to draw level, as the Malaysians crumbled under pressure. The Malaysians hit the red ring (8) once and went on to lose the second by a slender one-point margin. There was more misery in store for the Malaysians who shot into the red ring thrice (8-8-8), while Das-Ankita drilled in three perfect 10s en route to a six-point win in the third set. The Indian pair sealed the issue with three more 10s in the fourth set and set up a last-eight clash against the fourth-seeded Indonesians. Should they overcome the Indonesian challenge, the Indians may run into the top-seeded Koreans in a potential semifinal clash in the Olympic-qualifying event. There are six quota spots available from the Asian Games -- the recurve mixed team winners and two archers ranked high in the individual events. In the compound men's team event, the second-seeded Indians trio of Ojas, Abhishek Verma and Prathamesh Jawkar thrashed 15th seed Singapore (Woon Teng NG, Lee Chung Hee Alan, Jun Hui Goh) 235-219. The Indian triumvirate had a cautious start and had four 10s to take a 58-55 lead. But the Indians came on their own from the second end onwards and dropped just three points to rout their rivals by a 16-point margin. The compound men's team is pitted against lower-ranked Bhutan in the quarters and will likely face the third-seeded Chinese Taipei in the semifinals. The top-seeded Indian women's compound team of Jyothi, Aditi Swami and Parneet Kaur, who got a bye into the quarters, will open its campaign against ninth-seeded Hong Kong, who ousted Bangladesh 225-218. The Indian men's recurve team of Das, Dhiraj and Tushar Shelke beat Hong Kong's Kwok Yin Chai, Law Kwun Pok Lucien and Wn Chun Kit 6-0 (58-47, 57-49, 57-55) in a lopsided contest. The third-seeded Indians, who face lower-ranked Mongolia (No. 11) in the last-eight, have an easy draw till the final, with Korea and Japan in the top half. The unfancied women's recurve team of Ankita Bhakat, Bhajan Kaur and Simranjeet Kaur also shone through, ousting 12th-seeded Thailand. The fifth-seeded Indians won 5-1 (49-47, 54-54, 55-54) and are pitted against fourth-seeded Japan in a tough quarterfinal match-up.
