From looking up song credits to closely following the links between musicians, Six Notes of Separation has become Helena's space to fully explore the connections that underpin the music industry. But here's the gag- every episode on an artist, must be linked to the previous and succeeding artist in some way and with a new look for 2025, comes a new voice. Episodes '(ft. the fans)' will be dropping regularly to give a brand new perspective on the musicians at hand, their expertise being put to use by giving listeners the inside scoop on all things fan-and-artist related.

Six Notes of Separation
Billie Eilish (the finale)

*Disclaimer: Eating Disorders and Depression discussed

The only way I could have possibly ended Six Notes of Separation, was in the same way it all started, that being with the one and only Billie Eilish.

As I was thinking of how to round off and wrap up Six Notes, it dawned on me that this podcast sort of acts as a metaphor of my life. Not only does ending with Billie embody the foundations of what Six Notes is all about (how everything and everyone is connected) but it also came to act as a microcosm of my teenage years too.

If it wasn't for Billie and her radio show with her dad, I never would have found the likes of Bon Iver or Gracie Abrams or Doja Cat, I never would have fallen in love with music and therefore pursued a career in radio and podcasting. So as I came to this epiphany, I was left thinking: was it ever really about Six Notes of Separation or was it always about Billie Eilish?

From different hair colours to baggy clothes to sexuality to mental health, I'm going to be taking you through what it is that's seen Billie gain the cult following she continues to grow. There's going to be emotion and music and personal anecdotes but I think if the 15 year-old Helena who released her first ever podcast episode five years ago could have had this then, she probably would have wept.

If you've made it this far, thank you from the bottom of my heart for the past five years. Whether you were here listening to my innermost thoughts (The Coop listeners, you're real ones) or joining me for deep dives into musicians and their art, I would not be where I am today without this space I had to create and learn. To anyone who ever liked or commented or listened or subscribed, I deeply appreciate you. And with that, Six Notes is officially COMPLETE!!!!

Six Notes of Separation
Kneecap

It’s more likely that you’d have heard of the lads, who make up rapping trio ‘Kneecap’, through news apps and social media discourse then you would have because of their music. From falling out with countless governments, to being charged with terrorism offences, it’s easy to say that Kneecap has sparked nothing short of scandal and controversy ever since their inception.

Whilst they've made their fair share of enemies, Móglaí Bap, Mo Chara and DJ Próvaí have become responsible for something far larger than some angry politicians- some could say that the trio have been critical in driving a resurgence in the Irish language.

So who are these rappers and what is Kneecap all about? To be relieved of such questions and learn about the trio's links to last week's 'Fontaines D.C.', look no further than this episode of Six Notes of Separation.

Six Notes of Separation
Fontaines D.C. (ft. the fans)

In 2014, five lads bonded over Dublin, poetry and music at school- the manifestation of their friendship being their band ‘Fontaines D.C.’ Little did they know that ten years later, they’d be the group responsible for enkindling a resurgence in Irish music.

After graduating from BIMM in Dublin, Fontaines D.C. landed a record deal, a tour and a whole lot of love from their home crowd. But it was their 2022 album ‘Skinny Fia’ that generated buzz and saw them break through into the UK music scene.

Since then, they’ve adopted a new look, new label, new producer and new sound. The result of this you may ask? A chart battle next to none other than ‘Espresso’s’ Sabrina Carpenter. The success the boys has seen in the past year has been phenomenal but how much does their Dublin-centric tunes resonate with an audience from across the pond? Thankfully, I’m joined by fan Tristan, to answer exactly that.

I’ll also be taking you through the link between this episode’s and last episode’s ‘The Weeknd’….who could be the next artist and what will be their connection to Fontaines D.C.?

Six Notes of Separation
The Weeknd (ft. the fans)

The Weeknd's career and the announcement of its subsequent end can perhaps be summed up in a re-telling of the story of Cain and Abel. But instead of two brothers bearing the brunt of murder and jealousy, this story involves one man and his alter ego. This is the story of Kin Kane and Abel Tesfaye.

Falling into his professional career by fobbing off the aspiring producer, Jeremy Rose, Tesfaye shot to fame through endorsements from fellow, Toronto-born, rapper Drake and newspaper outlets such as the New York Times.

Now holding accolades from Grammy's to Guinness World Records, The Weeknd has become one of the most popular musicians of this decade. So why has he decided to put it all to rest and how has the fate of The Weeknd been written by Kin Kane?

In this episode, I'll be putting these questions to bed, taking you through the links between this episode's and last episode's 'The Weeknd' along the way. Who do you think the next artist could be and what will be their connection to The Weeknd?

Six Notes of Separation
Kid Cudi

Though you may not know much about him, you will know the names of his successors. With the likes of The Weeknd, Travis Scott, Tyler, The Creator and many more all drawing inspiration from Kid Cudi, it's safe to say that the impact this artist has left on the industry is one that's deeply entrenched in the history of rap and hip hop.

Growing up with Lil Wayne as his inspiration, Scott Mescudi was taken under the wing of Kanye West's 'GOOD Music' to begin his career as a writer and producer for some of the biggest names in the industry.

However, after the success of his solo career and the subsequent fame that came with it, Scott found himself checking into rehab working through addiction and depression. Now he's back in 2025 with the upcoming release of a new album so it's only fitting that in this episode of Six Notes', we dive into everything that made Kid Cudi the legend that he is.

As always, I'll be taking you through the links between this week's and last episode's 'Lil Nas X'- who do you think the next artist will be and what could be the connection between them and Lil Nas X?

Six Notes of Separation
Lil Nas X

Montero Hill said it would take him 10 years to reach 'legendary' status but Lil Nas X is looking more like Lil Nas I considering his career peaked after one year of making music.

Growing up on the internet with a following gained from his viral Twitter accounts, Hill used his social media skills to study what made a song go viral. With $30 and a month spent on writing catchy lyrics, Lil Nas X had made his No.1 hit 'Old Town Road'. But what's happened to the rapper since then?

In this episode, I'll be looking at the rise and flop of Lil Nas X, revealing the link to last episode's 'Doja Cat' along the way.

Six Notes of Separation
Doja Cat (ft. the fans)

Amala Dlamini never really suited a life of rules and regulations, born into a creative household that encouraged her to express freely from a young age. So, perhaps it comes as no surprise that Amala adopted a stage name in honour of her two favourite things: weed and cats.

After hustling in the industry for years before her novelty song 'Mooo!' went viral, Doja Cat has now become one of the most successful female rappers of this century. But when people hear her name, there's often a long list of controversies that follow.

What is it that keeps her fanbase so strong after countless resurgences of the '#DojaIsOverParty' tweet? Well later on in this episode, I'm joined by fan, Doja Fantasy, to answer that exact question.

Additionally, I'll also be revealing the link between this episode and last episode's 'SZA'- who do you think will be the next artist and what will their connection be to Doja Cat?

Six Notes of Separation
SZA

In her youth, Solana Rowe did what she could to become estranged from her religion. She ditched wearing a hijab for fear of increased Islamophobia and as a result felt disconnected from her father. But when it came to expressing herself and when it came to laying bare her vulnerabilities through the catharsis of her music, Solana chose to be infinitely linked to Islam by adopting the stage name ‘SZA’.

SZA has now become a genre-bending artist, breaking records once set by Taylor Swift and Whitney Houston. Yet there remains to be many who have never heard her name. If you’re one of those people, then welcome to this episode of Six Notes.

Not only will we be looking at the links between this episode and last episode’s ‘Chappell Roan’ but we’ll also be jumping head first into how Rowe became the chart-topping musician we now know her as, covering everything from birth to success.

Chappell Roan (ft. the fans)

Kayleigh Rose invented her drag queen persona 'Chappell Roan' as a means of embodying the more confident and boisterous version of herself. Making music and performing live became Kayleigh's way to escape from the shame and confinement that came from her conservative and religious upbringing in Missouri.

But perhaps something she didn't quite foresee, was the need to return to the quiet life of Kayleigh after she went on to hit worldwide fame last summer.

Later, we'll also be hearing from fan Amanda, to learn about why Chappell is so important and how her controversies has affected opinions amongst the fans.

As always, I'll be revealing the link between this episode and last episode's 'Role Model', leaving you with the question of what the next link and who the next artist will be!

Six Notes of Separation
Role Model

Born in Maine as 'Tucker Pillsbury', the rapper-turned-singer found music and industry attention from a rather accidental place. With the backing of major musicians and a record deal secured, the only thing in the way of Tucker's success was his paranoia and depression.

Riddled with homesickness and sick of L.A, Role Model shot to breakthrough success last year with his sophomore album 'Kansas Anymore'. Once a 'Dorothy', lost and traversing unfamiliar land, it's safe to say that Role Model has most certainly found his yellow brick road back home, gathering a devoted fanbase along the way.

In this episode, we'll be exploring the life and music of Role Model, revealing the link between this episode and last episode's 'Gracie Abrams'. Who do you think the next artist will be?

Gracie Abrams (ft. the fans)

Well things certainly look a little different...Six Notes has had a glow-up and with that comes a new take on the pod.

Although you might know Gracie Abrams as the 'bob and bows pop star' that's confidently opened stadium after stadium for Taylor Swift, the singer started her career from a far more insular place instead. Born into a family of success, it's Gracie's hard work and refined talent that's led her to overcome any accusations of being a 'nepo-baby'.

From stage fright and bedroom pop to arenas and anthems, I'll be taking you through the life and career of Gracie Abrams, perhaps hearing from a fan along the way...

As always, I'll be linking this episode to last episode's 'Adrianne Lenker' and it's for you to ponder what the next link and who the next artist will be.

Six Notes of Separation
Adrianne Lenker

Born and raised into a Christian cult, escaping with her family at the age of 4 and suffering a life-threatening accident just one year later, it's music and songwriting which Adrianne Lenker has quoted as her means of survival.

And whilst some may have taken the control and judgement she was exposed to in her youth and let it inform the way they lived the rest of their lives, Adrianne seems to find her emancipation and liberation through being exceptionally raw and vulnerable in her music. In this way, Adrianne has managed to make that means of survival, a means to success, co-founding the indie-rock/folk band 'Big Thief' as well as embarking on her own solo career.

In this episode, we'll be exploring the life and music of Adrianne Lenker, revealing the link between this episode and last episode's 'The National' along the way!

Six Notes of Separation
The National

How did this group of five 'sad dads' become associated with pop royalty such as Taylor Swift and Phoebe Bridgers? Well, the answer is simple, it all boils down to band member, Aaron Dessner.

Whilst The National, rose to success through their indie rock ballads, it was guitarist and keyboardist Aaron Dessner that continued charging ahead. With his gifted skills in producing music, it wasn't long until Aaron became the songsmith behind some of this decade's biggest albums- his famous Long Pond Studios being a hot spot for hosting the pop industry's most-loved talent.

So it's only natural that this episode of Six Notes' focuses not only on the career of the band, but that of Dessner too, revealing the link between last episode's 'Bon Iver' to this week's 'The National', along the way!

Six Notes of Separation
Bon Iver

"It's like good death- good winter. Things need rest."

These are the words of Bon Iver's frontman, Justin Vernon, on why he chose the aforementioned band name. Unlike most artists who are hoping to have their 'big breakthrough moment', Vernon holds far more yearning to be able to hide from the public and so, to metaphorically 'die'.

But despite him choosing a band name that he thought could justify his seclusion from the music scene, Justin Vernon has instead pre-established the one thing he was trying to run away from- the permanence of Bon Iver's art and impact. Whilst Justin might get away with resembling the ephemeral winter, it's Bon Iver's music that remains as infinite as the seasons,-welcome to this episode of Six Notes of Separation.

Amongst the tale of Bon Iver tale, I'll also be diving into the connection between this episode and last episode's 'Tyler, The Creator' and if you want to put a face to the voice, head over to Youtube to watch the pod there: https://youtu.be/IZiozI9bigA

Tyler, The Creator

Two arrests, three bans of entry to three different countries and countless accusations of misogyny and homophobia- you wouldn't think this is the life of Tyler, The Creator, but it is.

And this is something that he does so well; Tyler seems to escape all the murkiness of his past with a sense of effortless and aloofness. The respect he's garnered for his work as an artist and a visionary, as well as his undying commitment to defend what he feels is 'right', is what makes Tyler Okonma someone you can't help but love and root for.

In this episode of Six Notes, I'll be taking you through the life of Odd Future co-founder, Tyler Okonma, diving into the highs and lows of his success. The link between this week's and last episode's 'Doechii' will also be revealed and I'll leave you wondering who the next artist and the next connection could be...

Six Notes of Separation
Doechii

The story of Doechii is nothing without the story of 11-year-old Jaylah Hickmon. For Jaylah, 'Doechii' wasn't a name plucked out of thin air nor was it a persona or a symbol of someone who was in need of an alter ego, 'Doechii' was much more than any of that because Doechii is a mindset that saved an 11-year-old from giving up on what life had to offer.

In this episode of Six Notes of Separation, I'll be diving into the artist we know as Doechii, she's been all over our algorithms across the past couple of months and for good reason too. She's fresh, she's exciting, she's talented but above everything else, she's a visionary.

Learn about how the childhood of Jaylah Hickmon's life lead her to become the innovative artist that is Doechii and as for the rules of Six Notes, I'll be taking you through the connections between the aforementioned and last episode's 'Lana Del Rey'.

Lana Del Rey

Despite being crowned as one of the best American female songwriters of the 21st century, Lana Del Rey has had a career peppered with controversy and public discontent. From being coined as an industry plant to being called out as an artist who 'glamourises abuse', it's safe to say Elizabeth Grant hasn't had an easy time with the fame and attraction her music garners.

In this episode of Six Notes, I'll be taking you through the person behind 'Lana Del Rey', a born and raised New Yorker with an adolescence marked by despondency and an existential questioning of what it means to be alive. In other words, I'll be taking you through the life of Elizabeth Grant.

Post Malone

Austin Post, the renowned rapper and hip hop artist better known as, Post Malone, left college at the age of 18 to move to the music-making scene of LA. Just two years later, he ended up accumulating millions of streams as well as securing collaborations with major artists like Kanye West and 50 Cent.

However, Post's time in the public eye has been nothing short of challenging. From being labelled as a 'culture vulture' to battling an addiction to alcohol on his own, it's safe to say that the success and stability Post has made for himself is hard-earned proof that he's better and stronger than ever.

In this episode, I'll be explaining how Post Malone is linked to last episode's Morgan Wallen and I'll be back with another episode on another artist- what do you think will connect them to Austin Post?

He captured our hearts with his self-reflective and raw lyrics, he introduced a whole new audience to country music and he gained mainstream success after just two years in the Navy. In this episode, I'll be diving into the life of singer-songwriter Zach Bryan.

After a couple of his songs went viral on social media, Bryan was honourably discharged from the Navy to focus on his music career but 2024 has come with a lot of turbulence for the country artist as he faces accusations of being emotionally abusive from his ex-girlfriend and podcaster, Brianna LaPaglia.
