Trauma, Truth, and the Nervous System | With Dr Brian Tierney

Ever tried to positive-think your way out of trauma and wondered why it didn’t work?Yeah, that’s because your nervous system didn’t get the memo.

In this chat, Paris sits down with Dr Brian Tierney, a somatic psychotherapist and educator who’s been to the edge and back, to talk about what really happens when your body’s had a rough trot. They get into the nitty gritty about trauma, how it lives in your nervous system, how it hijacks your head, and why healing starts from the neck down, not the neck up.

Brian’s story isn’t polished. He’s walked through his own rock bottoms and knows what it’s like to face the tough stuff head-on. Together, they look at how the mental health system often misses the mark, what somatic therapy actually means in real terms, and the fine line between real healing and the quick-fix hype that’s cooked half the self-help world.

They also talk psychedelics, where they help, where they harm, and what it really takes to feel safe again when your body’s been stuck in survival for years.

What you’ll hear in this episode:

  • What somatic therapy really looks like (no incense required)
  • How the body stores trauma and what it takes to unlearn that tension
  • Why symptom chasing doesn’t heal the root
  • The danger of turning trauma into a trend
  • A small shift to help you start feeling safe in your own skin again

If you’ve ever felt fried, flat, or fed up with healing that feels more like a performance than a process, this one’s for you.

About Dr Brian Tierney?

Dr Brian Tierney is a somatic psychologist, chiropractic doctor, and international educator dedicated to helping people reconnect with their bodies to access healing, authenticity, and creative expression. With a deep background in neuroscience, trauma recovery, and somatic therapy, Dr Tierney bridges the gap between science and embodiment—guiding individuals toward greater nervous system regulation and self-understanding.

Through his practice, The Somatic Doctor, and his global workshops, he empowers people to cultivate body awareness as a foundation for emotional resilience and personal transformation.

His work invites you to move beyond survival patterns and into a life of balance, curiosity, and embodied truth.

How a plant-based diet can heal your mind and body | with Stefan Testi

What if the food on your plate is quietly messing with your mind, your mood, and your body? And what if choosing plants could change the way you see yourself altogether?

In this episode, Paris sits down with Stefan Testi, speaker and advocate for veganism, to dig into the messy, often misunderstood world of plant-based living. From brain chemistry to body health, they get real about what happens when you start questioning everything you’ve been told about food.

Stefan opens up about what led him to ditch animal products, how food impacts not just physical health but emotional wellness, and why so many of us turn to food as a crutch when we’re struggling inside. Together, they explore the hormones and chemicals hidden in modern diets—and what it actually takes to start making the shift without guilt or overwhelm.

What you’ll hear in this episode:

  • How food choices affect mood, mental clarity, and emotional health
  • Why animal products today aren’t the same as what our ancestors ate
  • The addictive pull of food and how a plant-based diet can shift it
  • How choosing plants connects to empowerment, self-love, and purpose
  • Where to start if you’re curious about going plant-based

If you’ve ever wondered whether what you eat could be f*cking with your head more than you realise, this conversation goes there.

About Stefan Testi

Stefan Testi is a passionate vegan advocate and speaker, using his platform to challenge outdated beliefs about food, health, and compassion. Through his work, he encourages others to question the systems that shape what we eat and how we think about animals, the planet, and ourselves.

You can find Stefan’s advocacy work through the Farm Transparency Project — a powerful initiative dedicated to exposing the truth behind animal agriculture and empowering consumers with transparency.

Why Creativity Heals What Trauma Silences | with Molly W. Schenck

Ever felt like your body holds stories you can’t quite put into words?

Movement might be the key.In this episode, I sit down with Molly W. Schenck (MFA, MEd, RSME/T) — artist, educator, somatic practitioner, and author — to explore how creativity and trauma collide and how movement can unlock the emotions we have been holding inside.

From her early work in higher education and the fitness industry to founding Grey Box Collective, Molly shares how she developed Trauma Informed Creative Practices to help people heal, connect, and reclaim expression in their own bodies.

We dive into the ways trauma shows up in the body, what interrupts our movement, and how somatic practices can shift not only personal healing but also classrooms, creative spaces, and communities.

We also unpack how art can make the “too hard to talk about” topics a little easier to face.

What we cover:

  • How trauma impacts the body’s movement and expression
  • Why creativity is a powerful tool for healing
  • The development of Trauma Informed Creative Practices
  • What Molly learned from working in both higher ed and fitness
  • How Grey Box Collective uses art to navigate tough subjects
  • Advice for educators and artists supporting trauma recovery
  • The future of trauma informed creative work
  • How to start your own journey of healing through movement

✨ About Molly W. Schenck

Molly is fascinated with human movement and what interrupts its full expression. She is the author of Trauma-Informed Teaching Practices for Dance Educators and has presented workshops and trainings for individuals, organisations, and arts leaders locally, nationally, and internationally.

In 2016, she founded Grey Box Collective — an arts organisation that makes weird art about tough stuff — and currently serves as the director and creative producer.

In 2022, she launched the Simply Soma Method, working with clients 1:1 to use movement as a catalyst for overall mental and physical wellbeing.

Why Sobriety Can Make Dating Harder (and Sex Better) | with Phoebe Wilson

Think sober sex is boring? Think again. We’re unpacking what really changes (and what gets better) when intimacy isn’t fuelled by booze or drugs.

In this episode, Paris sits down with Phoebe Wilson, founder of A Centred Mind and AOD lecturer, to dive straight into the messy, awkward, and surprisingly empowering realities of navigating relationships in sobriety.

From first sober dates (and all the cringe that comes with them) to figuring out when to tell someone you’re in recovery, Paris and Phoebe unpack how getting sober changes intimacy, connection, and self-worth. They talk libido rollercoasters, grieving the “wild nights,” and how to start feeling safe and centred in your own skin again.

Phoebe also shares her approach to coaching at A Centred Mind, blending science with spirituality to help people through relationships, transitions, and the challenges of building a new identity in recovery.

What we cover:

  • Why sex and intimacy feel so different in sobriety

  • The awkwardness of early sober dating and how to handle it

  • When (and how) to talk about being sober with someone new

  • Libido spikes, crashes, and everything in between

  • Mourning the loss of “uninhibited” sex while moving forward

  • Rebuilding sexual confidence and worthiness without substances

  • How Phoebe blends science + spirituality in her coaching work

  • A practical tip for feeling more grounded in intimacy early in recovery

If you’ve ever wondered how to date, desire, or connect differently without substances, or just want to hear a real talk on sober intimacy, this one’s for you.

How to Help a Friend Who’s Suicidal | with Bradley Isbister

What if saving a mate’s life didn’t mean having all the answers, just knowing how to show up?

In this episode, Paris sits down with Bradley Isbister, Suicide Prevention Coordinator at Neami National based in Perth, Western Australia and board member for Men’s Health & Wellbeing WA, to talk about how young people can support each other through mental health crises, especially when suicide is on the table.

Bradley shares the thinking behind Right By You, a suicide prevention program co-designed with young people, for young people. It’s all about giving teens and young adults the tools to recognise warning signs, speak up without freaking out, and take action when someone they care about is struggling, online or IRL.

Together, Paris and Bradley go through the Right By You website step by step, unpacking the key resources, how to use them, and what makes the platform such a game-changer for young people navigating tough conversations with their mates.

We unpack what real support looks like when a friend is doing it tough, why language matters, and how to break the silence without breaking trust. Plus, Paris asks the tough stuff: how to spot red flags, what to say (and what not to), and how to hold space without feeling completely overwhelmed.

What we cover:

  • How Bradley got involved in suicide prevention

  • What makes Right By You different and why it’s youth-led

  • Warning signs to look out for when someone might be at risk

  • What to say (and not say) when you’re worried about a friend

  • How to respond to troubling posts or messages online

  • Helping when the signs aren’t clear

  • Why early intervention matters, and how programs like this are shifting the conversation

  • A walkthrough of the Right By You website and how to use it

  • Advice for anyone scared to step in but knows they probably should

Whether you’re supporting a mate or going through it yourself, this ep will give you the tools to show up and speak up when it counts.

Fix Your Gut, Fix Your Mind | with Dr. Angela Genoni

What if the key to your mental health wasn’t just in your head… but in your gut?

In this episode, Paris chats with Perth-based nutritionist and gut health expert Dr. Angela Genoni to unpack the real science behind the gut-brain connection, your microbiome, and how what you eat affects your mood, anxiety, focus, and overall mental wellbeing. Whether you’re battling brain fog, dealing with food sensitivities, or just wondering if that bloated feeling could be affecting more than your jeans…this one’s for you.

Angela breaks it down in a way that’s easy to follow, busts a few myths, and gives real, doable tips you can try straight away. We dive into the gut-brain axis, how stress messes with your microbiome, and what ultra-processed foods are actually doing to your mental health. Plus, Angela shares how small changes can create big shifts in how you feel, both physically and emotionally.

What we cover:

    • What the gut microbiome actually is and why it’s called your second brain

    • Signs your gut health is out of balance

    • How stress, lifestyle, and ultra-processed foods damage your mental and physical health

Why Can’t Doctors Explain This? | FND, Stroke, Addiction & Recovery with Monique Davies

What happens when your brain taps out on you? When your body stops doing what you tell it to, or you’re stuck in a hospital bed feeling like you’ve lost control of everything? In this episode, Paris sits down with Monique Davies - neurological physiotherapist and founder of The Brain Physio - to unpack the gritty reality of brain and nervous system rehab. From strokes to Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), Monique works with people navigating life after serious neurological conditions. They chat about why FND is so misunderstood, the rise in stroke cases (including how meth use can crank up your risk), and the emotional toll these conditions take, not just physically but mentally.Monique also opens up about her own battles with binge drinking and how lived experience has shaped the way she supports her clients. This one’s about breaking down medical jargon, calling out misconceptions, and reminding people that recovery, whether it’s from addiction, a stroke, or FND, is never a straight line. What we cover:- How Monique found her way into neurological physio (hint: it started back in high school)- What the hell FND actually is, and why people get told it’s “all in their head”- Risk factors for FND and why early intervention matters- Why strokes are on the rise (and who’s most at risk)- The link between meth use and stroke- What’s new in neuro rehab that’s actually helping people- How addiction impacts the brain, and why Monique brings her own experience into her work- Tips for navigating the health system when sh*t gets complicated

The Yatra Centre with Mike Miller

In this episode, Paris sits down with Mike Miller, Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, EMDR therapist, and founder of the Yatra Centre in Krabi, Thailand, to talk about what true trauma recovery can look like when you get the right support.

After decades of international experience in addiction and mental health treatment, Mike created Yatra to offer something different: a peaceful, body-based healing space that integrates evidence-backed therapies like EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), CBT, and somatic work, all within the calm surrounds of southern Thailand.

Mike shares what led him to develop Yatra’s unique "bottom-up" approach, why traditional top-down talk therapy often isn’t enough for deep trauma, and how clients at Yatra are supported not just psychologically, but emotionally, physically, and spiritually.

    TRIGGER WARNING:

This episode discusses trauma, PTSD, addiction, and mental health challenges. Please listen with care.

Loving an Addict Without Losing Yourself with Tiana Cologna

When someone you love is caught in addiction, it can feel like your entire world starts to revolve around them and slowly, you start to lose yourself. In this episode, Paris is joined by Tiana Cologna, coach, NLP practitioner, and founder of Consciously Connect, who knows this journey firsthand.Tiana opens up about what it was like growing up with a brother struggling with drug addiction, and how the traditional support systems often left her family feeling helpless and unseen. Through her own healing and study of alternative therapies like NLP and hypnosis, Tiana discovered new ways forward, ones that didn’t require waiting for the addict to "choose" recovery before the rest of the family could start healing too.If you’re loving someone through addiction right now, whether they want help or not, Tiana shares so much wisdom about how to hold onto your own wellbeing in the process. You’re not alone in this.TRIGGER WARNING:This episode discusses addiction, enabling behaviours, co-dependency, and the emotional toll addiction can have on families. Please take care while listening. You can find Tiana Cologna here:WebsiteFacebookInstagram

Exposing The Troubled Teen Industry with Meg Appelgate

In this episode, Paris chats with Meg Appelgate, survivor, author of Becoming UNSILENCED, and founder of Unsilenced, about what really goes on behind closed doors in the Troubled Teen Industry in the United States.

Meg shares her experience growing up in these institutions, the lack of oversight that allows abuse to continue, and why “tough love” approaches often cause more harm than healing. We dive into how normal teenage behaviour gets pathologised, the emotional toll of gaslighting and victim-blaming, and what kind of real support families need when they’re struggling.

While the focus is on the US system, we also reflect on how some of these same patterns might be playing out here in Australia, and what we should be keeping an eye on.

    We also talk about:

    • Why it took years for Meg to speak up

    • The work Unsilenced is doing to support survivors

    • The importance of finding your voice after trauma

    • How to challenge broken systems and protect young people

Trigger Warning: This episode includes conversations around trauma and institutional abuse.

    Sh*ts F*cked
Why EQ Matters More Than IQ with Breanna May

In this episode of Sh*ts F*cked, I chat with Breanna May, former teacher turned CEO of The Mind School, about breaking free from limiting beliefs, the power of emotional intelligence, and why the traditional education system isn’t setting us up for success.

Breanna shares the moment she knew she had to leave teaching and build The Mind School, a place where mindset, shadow work, and communication take centre stage. We unpack why EQ matters more than IQ, how shadow work helps us heal, and why communication is key to personal growth. Plus, Breanna reveals the one life-changing tool she wishes every school and household had access to.

If you’re feeling stuck or like your dreams are out of reach, this episode is filled to the absolute brim with insights to shift your mindset and take action. Tune in for deep convos, practical advice, and a few laughs along the way.

    Sh*ts F*cked
Married to a Con Man with Tahlia Hasson

In this episode of Sh*ts F*cked, we go on an absolute rollercoaster with Tahlia Hasson, a woman who has been through more in a few years than most do in a lifetime. It all started in 2019, when she was hit with the sudden death of her father while also preparing for her uncle’s passing. In the middle of all that grief, her six-year relationship crumbled, leaving her to pick up the pieces of a life that felt like it was falling apart. Then came 2020, a year that started with a chance meeting at a hair salon, a whirlwind romance, and a miscarriage that rocked her world. Just weeks later, she found out she was pregnant again, and before she knew it, she was eloping in Broome with a man she barely knew…but life had more twists in store! When her new husband disappeared to Melbourne for four months, Tahlia was left alone, struggling with housing instability, a newborn, and a growing addiction to Oxycodone and Tramadol. And just when she thought things couldn’t get worse, he came back, and so did the lies. Cheating. Financial betrayal. Oh, and the casual bombshell that he was already married to someone else the whole damn time.Instead of letting her past define her, Tahlia threw herself into personal development, network marketing, and coaching, completely shifting her mindset. Now, as a mindset coach and podcast host, she’s using her experiences to help others break free from their own sh*t and step into their power.

    Sh*ts F*cked
Hinterland's First-of-Its-Kind Health Retreat with Jackie Durnin

In this episode of Sh*ts F*cked, Jackie Durnin shares the incredible path that led her to create Hinterland Health Retreat. From moving from Ireland to Australia and facing personal challenges that affected every area of her life, Jackie took a hard look at what was holding her back, and found the tools she needed to break free. After years of struggling with triggers related to relationships and boundaries, therapy led Jackie to discover Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).

What started as a way to heal herself soon became a career shift that took her to rehab facilities and retreats worldwide, including Habilitat in Hawaii. Now, Jackie is combining all of her experience to create a space where people can finally address their trauma, addiction, anxiety, depression, and physical pain.

At Hinterland Health Retreat, she integrates therapies like EFT with cutting-edge technology such as ECG brain rebalancing, IV clinics, and DNA analysis... all designed to get to the root of what’s holding you back! Jackie also opens up about her childhood experiences and how they’ve shaped both her professional work and her personal life. She’s here to help others find lasting healing, so they can move forward with confidence, and never feel the need to look back!

    Sh*ts F*cked
Escaping the Cycle of Domestic Violence with Samatha Schulte

In this episode of Sh*ts F*cked, Paris chats with Samantha Schulte, founder of The Survivor Hustler, about her journey through domestic violence, addiction, and finding the strength to take her life back. Samantha opens up about surviving domestic violence and addiction, revealing the unimaginable trauma she endured.

Her abusive husband took his own life during a police siege, a final act of control after she tried to leave him. Now she has turned her darkest moments into a mission to help others find their way back to themselves.  She shares how she turned her pain into purpose, creating The Survivor Hustler to help others own their stories and find a way forward, no matter how heavy their past might feel.

Paris and Samantha tackle the realities of domestic violence and recovery, cutting through the clichés to talk about what it really takes to rebuild when everything feels broken. This episode is a conversation about self-worth, and the power of refusing to stay stuck in the narrative someone else wrote for you. It’s honest, confronting, and reminds you that even when life feels f*cked, you can still hustle your way out of the dark.

    Sh*ts F*cked
Healing Addiction Through Spirituality with Yani Foord

In this episode of Sh*ts F*cked, Paris sits down with Yani Foord, an Empowerment Guide dedicated to helping women rediscover self-love and embrace their true, authentic selves. The conversation delves into Yani's journey, starting with the impact of childhood trauma and her early experimentation with drugs and alcohol at just 16. Yani shares how these experiences escalated into a hidden meth addiction, the toll of carrying that secret, and the challenges she faced in opening up to her loved ones. She reflects on the process of rebuilding trust and healing her relationships after revealing her struggles. Now 3.5 years sober, Yani offers insights into the strategies that have kept her grounded in recovery. She explains how her journey has become a driving force in guiding other women toward self-love and healing. Through practices like activating the Divine Feminine, clearing stagnant energy, and developing emotional intelligence, Yani empowers her clients to raise their energy and step into their full potential. The episode also explores the meaning of self-love in a practical sense, with Yani and Paris breaking down actionable steps for anyone looking to strengthen their relationship with themselves.

Innovative Approaches in Psychotherapy with John Cuturilo

This week on Sh*ts F*cked, we’re joined by John Cuturilo, an empathetic Aussie life coach, therapist and host of the podcast Your Listener, with a knack for connecting with people on a real, human level. With a Bachelor of Psychological Sciences and years of experience in mental health support, John has made it his mission to help people navigate life’s challenges and find their independence. John takes us through his journey into psychotherapy and what motivated him to combine traditional therapeutic approaches with life coaching. His practice blends evidence-based methods with a personalised, down-to-earth approach, ditching the one-size-fits-all mindset that doesn’t work for most of us. We dig into person-centred and existential therapies and how these frameworks shape his unique way of working with clients. We also tackle some big topics like the misconceptions about therapy, the limitations of traditional methods, and the ways John keeps his practice adaptable and tailored to each individual. He shares his thoughts on the vital role of communication skills, not just in therapy, but in life, and how he supports clients in finding their voice and achieving their goals. A Fight for Sobriety and Motherhood with Sonya Johnson

This week on Shts Fcked, Paris sits down with Sonya Johnson, a fierce advocate, inspiring mum, and all-around powerhouse from the USA. Sonya’s story is one of hope, but it also takes a raw and unfiltered look at the harsh realities of addiction and the systems designed to “help” families in crisis. Sonya shares the heartbreaking experience of losing custody of her children while battling addiction, a pain that words can barely capture. In the US, the system often removes children from parents struggling with addiction, placing them in foster care. This adds layers of trauma for families already at their lowest. Australia takes a different approach, focusing on keeping children with their parents as long as basic needs are met. Sonya’s journey reveals just how gruelling the fight for reunification can be in America. The conversation explores the emotional and logistical challenges she faced to regain custody of her children. Navigating a cold and complex system, finding the strength to show up for court dates, and rebuilding her life to prove she was worthy of her kids. Sonya speaks openly about the heartbreak of the process and the pure joy of finally being reunited with her family. The episode also highlights Sonya’s incredible work with NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, her recognition as Child Welfare Professional of the Year, and her mission to support other parents fighting to reunite with their children. This conversation is an emotional deep dive into the heartbreak, hope, and healing that comes with addiction and family. It is essential listening for anyone who knows the pain of losing loved ones to addiction or wants to understand the resilience it takes to heal and rebuild.
