How many Shanghainese people living overseas still continue to speak Shanghainese? Recently, a Shanghai-born girl who grew up in the United States interviewed our podcast, as well as several other people who are still using the Shanghainese dialect. She later published an online article titled “Shanghainese may be a dying language, but it’s not dead yet.” Inspired by this, we, two Shanghai moms, wanted to dedicate this episode to talking about what Shanghainese means to us and how we can pass down this dialect. Finding the right live-in doula isn’t easy. Since the nanny lives in your home and cares for the baby 24/7, she spends even more time with the new mom than a roommate would. This means she needs not only professional skills and experience, but also the ability to get along well with others. In this episode, Minmin and Maomao talk about how bilingual families in the U.S. can help their children stick with speaking Chinese and not “lose” their mother tongue. Maomao's family is a typical bilingual family, and she has plenty of hands-on experience guiding her kids to use Chinese, even their regional dialect, Shanghainese. We shared some of our own little strategies, and also touched on real-life challenges — like how kids often switch entirely to English once they start school, or how to help your English-speaking spouse understand your conversations with the kids.
