With the 8 p.m. local kickoff the game didn't get over until close to midnight and while it wasn't the cleanest performance, USC is now 4-0 and 2-0 in conference play. Coach Hyde starts the show talking about how improved this USC offense is and how he liked the game plan against Michigan State, utilizing two back sets, play action passes and quarterback runs. With one of the top receivers out and losing a top offensive lineman didn't derail this offense that is playing at an elite level right now. On the defensive side Coach Hyde talks about the much improved play of the defensive line, some shortcomings from the linebackers and how he feels the secondary is playing confused and it is hurting their ability to play at a higher level. On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple-Double") and intern Riley Sager are back in studio breaking down the Trojans 45-31 victory over Michigan State late Saturday night in the Coliseum. It looked like USC had put the game away but the Spartans, in large part to a series of SC mistakes, clawed their way back in the third quarter cutting the lead to just 7 points. At that point quarterback Jayden Maiava and the rest of the offense took over and created some much needed separation, thwarting any potential MSU miracle comeback. Through four games the offense has been elite with no turnovers for Maiava and only four punts on the season, one of which was garbage time in the final seconds of the Michigan State victory. USC is first in total offense at 584 yards per game, first in points per game at 52.5, 1st in points per play, 1st in yards per play at 9.1, 4th in nation with 7.1 yards per rush and 4th with 11.9 yards per pass attempt. It has been a different story on the defensive side of the ball, with some marked improvements over last season but also some major concerns. The front seven is getting after it, forcing a lot of negative plays and pressure on the opposing quarterbacks. However, the secondary is struggling with multiple busted coverages each game including two that turned into Spartan touchdowns on Saturday. The penalties have also derailed some of the better defensive efforts, including four flags on one MSU drive that turned a punt where USC got the ball back into a Michigan State touchdown. The crew talks about all of that and everything else they saw in the Coliseum and what their initial thoughts are heading into a tough road test against No. 23 Illinois. The Spartans come into the Coliseum boasting a 3-0 record with quarterback Aidan Chiles playing at a high level and more importantly, not turning the ball over. USC is coming off its first real Big Ten road win at Purdue and will try to secure another conference win before the huge road showdown with No. 9 Illinois. The crew talks about the state of this USC football program heading into the game with an offense that has generated more yards per game than any other program, the most sacks in the country and some concerns in a secondary that has struggled at times and is dealing with multiple injuries. Looking at the Spartans, there are certainly some concerns despite the undefeated record. The defense has been leaking, giving up points to FCS Youngstown State last weekend, and there are multiple major injuries that head coach Jonathan Smith is dealing with. Lincoln Riley faced off with Smith back in 2022 when the Trojans survived an upset bid from Oregon State. Eventual Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams struggled until late, finally putting together a touchdown drive to give USC a 17-14 victory in Corvallis. Smith will try to recreate some of that magic to give the Spartans a shot Saturday night, coming in as a 17.5 point underdog to SC. The Helium Boys are back from the road!  Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino return to the remote studio to break down USC finally winning a Big Ten road game outside Los Angeles with Saturday's 33-17 victory over Purdue. It marked USC's first win in the Eastern Time Zone since 2012.  Shotgun spends his 'Two-Minute Drill' discussing the unique rain delay that caused this game to be delayed more than three hours and the vintage drainage system at Ross-Ade Stadium that led to a dry field. The 2-0 Trojans have outscored their opponents by a combined 99 points, but the schedule gets harder with Big Ten play kicking off and the first game away from the friendly confines of the Coliseum on deck. The crew doesn't spend much time on the Clay Helton Bowl, but they give some quick thoughts on how the Trojan passing offense shined and the USC defense faced some challenges against the Eagles. With the team winning by 39 points and coming out of the contest healthy, head coach Lincoln Riley couldn't ask for a much better start to the season heading into the conference slate. The "preseason" is now in the rearview mirror and USC will try to win its first game outside of the Pacific time zone since winning at Colorado in 2023. The USC 2025 football season is well underway after a Week 2 win over Georgia Southern in the Clay Helton Bowl. Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino were both on the sidelines from the Coliseum for a front-row seat to USC's 59-20 win over the Eagles.  Trevino and Spratling dive into their 'Two-Minute Drill' with the former taking time to talk about the emotions of seeing Helton once again in the Coliseum while Spratling takes the time to show some extra love for senior defensive end Anthony Lucas recording the first two sacks of his career.  The Helium Boys dive into their Stock Up, Stock Down segment, which includes USC's offensive line, the running back room, the duo of Makai Lemon and Ja'Kobi Lane and the Trojans' early sack production.  The Helium Boys then dive into the second half of the show to preview Purdue, which represent USC's Big Ten opener and first road game of the season. This is a reunion game for a multitude of reasons: USC starting QB Jayden Maiava played under Odom at UNLV in 2023, guiding them to the Mountain West Championship game. Former USC offensive line coach and offensive coordinator Josh Henson left the Trojans this offseason to be the offensive coordinator with the Boilermakers. Henson was part of Lincoln Riley's initial staff in 2022. Former USC wide receiver Charles Ross was on the team but was forced to medically retire. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking USC's second-straight blowout victory at home to start the 2025 college football season, a 59-20 beatdown of Georgia Southern led by former Trojan head coach Clay Helton. Coach Hyde talks about the Trojan offense that pretty much did whatever it wanted, with huge plays in the passing game and a running back group led by Waymond Jordan that Coach Hyde really thinks can be special. Flipping over to the defensive side, there are more concerns there with the way the Eagles were able to pick up yardage in the run game and put a few scoring drives together against the Trojans. The USC coaching staff was rotating players early, but Coach wants to see they figure out their best lineups so they can be playing at an optimal level in Big Ten play. He would also like to see the linebackers be more of a presence and play in the opponent's backfield more and have the cornerbacks make plays on the ball more and prevent some of the coverage busts that have happened early in the season. Coach Hyde finishes the show talking about the upcoming game against Purdue, with head coach Barry Odom already doubling the Boilermakers win total from 2024. This road contest could be a significant challenge for the Trojans, and coach wants to see this team go into with a business like attitude, play well and come home with the first conference victory of the season. On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Shotgun Spratling and intern Riley Sager are back in studio discussing the Trojans 39-point victory over Clay Helton's Georgia Southern Eagles. For the second straight week USC was able to blowout an overmatched opponent, easily covering the massive spreads and allowing backups to come into the game and gain invaluable experience. Following along on USCFootball.com's message board The Peristyle during the game, it was apparent that Trojan fans were expecting perfection against former USC head coach Clay Helton. The Trojans were never in danger of losing the game, were up by multiple touchdowns most of the evening and pretty much did whatever they wanted when they had the ball, but the P was acting like the sky was falling and this team would never win another football game. Ryan, Shotgun and Riley were all in the Coliseum on Saturday and give their thoughts on what impressed them from the Trojans, including a record-setting 755 yards of offense, and what concerns them including some defensive breakdowns that kept the game closer than expected early on.
