Over the past two years, ChristianaCare, based in Newark, Delaware, has increased the application of virtual nursing to 41% of its beds without hiring additional staff members.
The initial implementation of virtual nursing occurred in September 2022. By June 2023, the approach was operational in 17 units, encompassing 510 beds across ChristianaCare’s campuses in Newark and Wilmington, Delaware. By September 2024, the organization aims to integrate around 400 additional beds into the virtual nursing program, extending to various departments such as medical and surgical units, cardiac step-downs, oncology, and women's health and pediatrics.
Is ChristianaCare establishing a new model to combat the nursing shortage?
Join Adam Chambers, President of Nurse Recruitment Experts, as he analyzes how ChristianaCare did it, the pros and cons of the virtual approach, and how this technology could affect the nurse recruitment space.
Most hospitals have accepted that extortionate labor costs and depressed margins are here to stay. Dr Vi-Anne Antrum, CNO of Cone Health, thinks otherwise. In collaboration with other Executives, she contributed to a $100m financial turnaround in Cone's 2023 fiscal year. Dr Antrum's achievements include a reduction in premium labor costs of 48% and shift incentives by almost 50% working with a cross-functional team. This episode covers: • Fundamentals to revenue growth and cost reduction. • Creative hiring strategies. • Why a focus on retention is as important as hiring. • How to focus on metrics that matter. • Dr Antrum's priorities for the year ahead.
In early 2023, Susan Burke was handed a goal to help reduce costs by hiring 320 RNs for Oregon-based PeaceHealth. While she and her team were able to increase their hiring by 41% and save the organization at least $14m+, there were also a number of valuable lessons along the way.

"If we hadn't spent all that money on Indeed I'd be a millionaire" Sharon said, taking a swig of the $12 Bogle Chardonnay.
It's not easy being a (laid off) hospital CHRO these days. Less when increased staffing costs dragged your employer into the red 4 consecutive quarters.
Healthcare Recruitment teams have a rough relationship with advertising. You don't have an in-house expert on staff; everyone ends up fishing in the same pond, using the same suppliers.
But I think it's time we celebrate the results over high price points. Effective nurse recruitment ads have the potential to generate a consistent flow of qualified candidates.
And they don't need to all come from Indeed or LinkedIn. I've identified $1m of our spend on nurse recruitment advertising. In the podcast I'll share our learnings:
• Offer, audience, message: there are but 3 content considerations
• Create a strategy, standard operating procedures, and specialized resources
• Best way to manage relationships with job boards, e.g. Indeed
• Engaging respondees: making money go beyond the first interaction
• Value category diversification over channel
