Episode 33: “The Amazing Beardless Woman”
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the occasional gleeful tangent
This week’s Major Star is Mrs Miggins, the warm-hearted coffee shop owner with a weird predilection for that patented Blackadder blend of sharp sarcasm and even sharper cheekbones. A welcome female addition to the sausage fest that is Blackadder The Third, she claims to have a “brain the size of a sultana” but then reveals herself to be a canny businesswoman with a floury finger on the pulse of the times.
Continuing our series of interviews with special guests making the case about why their own favourite series of Blackadder is the most truly iconic, we are delighted to welcome back our friend Mark Lane, the brains and heart behind the ever-popular King Of Blackadder Twitter community. A dyed-in-the-wool Series One devotee, Mark talks about why, in his view, nothing comes close to the dark, plague-infested glory of The Black Adder

Bonus Episode 07: “Flight Of The Conchords”
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the occasional gleeful tangent.
Hot on the heels of our recent Father Ted deep dive, it’s now Michael’s turn to introduce Ian to a series he’d never seen before: Flight Of The Conchords. In this special bonus episode, we look at New Zealand’s “fourth most popular comedy-folk duo” and their award-winning HBO show, which centres on Bret and Jemaine’s spectacular failure to take New York by storm.
We are also joined by our friend Chrissy, who talks about what the Flight Of The Conchords means to her and her fellow Kiwis and about the affectionate sibling rivalry that exists between Australia and New Zealand.

Episode 32: “It’s The Lying I Find Most Hurtful”
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the occasional gleeful tangent.
This week’s Major Star segment is a twofer featuring two of our favourite characters in the original series: Elspet Gray as the Queen and Robert East as Prince Harry. We take a look at their respective roles in the court of Brian Blessed while touching upon Prince Harry’s well-known obsession with drains and his lesser known fear of spoons. And speaking of obsessions, we also look at how a writer’s blunder gave the humble turnip a prominent position in the Blackadder annals.
Prolific podcaster and British comedy enthusiast Bill Peters from New South Wales makes a welcome return to our podcast to fight the corner for Blackadder The Third as the best of the four series. Bill talks about what he loves about the team’s third outing and why, for him, it is the quintessential series of Blackadder.

Episode 30: “Many Apoh-loh-ghies for the Inconwenience”
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the occasional gleeful tangent.
As the title might suggest, the Scene Stealer for this episode is none other than the dastardly Prince Ludwig, a man whose powers of disguise know no limits – apart from, it would seem, his accent. We look at Hugh Laurie’s first major role in Blackadder and speculate on who else could have played that role and in what direction they might have taken it.
This episode also introduces the first of four interviews with special guests making the case about why their own preferred series of Blackadder is THE definitive one. To set the turnip rolling, we are joined by fellow podcaster, Queen fan and long-time friend of the show, Paul Bradbury, who waxes lyrical about his own personal favourite, Blackadder II.

Episode 30: “An Absolutely Scrummy Dream About Ponies”
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the occasional gleeful tangent.
This episode opens with a Points Of View-type segment where we channel our inner Anne Robinson (albeit less grumpy) and present a selection of messages and voice recordings from listeners around the world waxing lyrical on Harry Enfield, Baldrick and some of our recent guests.
Continuing our Major Star series, we also look at Miranda Richardson’s extraordinary performance as the young Queen Bess, memorably described by Richard Curtis as “a strange mixture of woman, child, nymphomaniac and tyrant”. As well as casting an eye over Miranda’s career – and reflecting on why so much of it seems to have passed us by – we revisit our favourite quintessential Queenie moments in Blackadder II.

Bonus Episode 6: “Ted Talk”
Down with this sort of thing! (Careful now.)
One of our ideas for bonus episodes was to introduce each other to sitcoms that we love. This time around, Ian initiates Michael into the weird and wonderful world of Father Ted, which was hugely popular in Britain and Ireland in the mid- to late 90s and, like Blackadder, is still widely loved, watched and quoted to this day.
In this special “Ted Talk”, we examine why an oddball comedy about three priests on a remote island should strike such a chord with audiences – and special guest Fearghal Traynor pops in to share a few insights about the innate Irishness of Father Ted.

Episode 29: “Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!”
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the occasional gleeful tangent.
In this two-hander Baldrick special – which was almost called A Turnip For The Books – we look at the various incarnations of Blackadder’s longsuffering sidekick throughout that dastardly dynasty, from Baldrick Son of Robin The Dung Gatherer to Private S. Baldrick in the trenches of the Somme.
As well as casting an eye over Sir Tony Robinson’s career before and after his big break in The Black Adder, we attempt to pinpoint the traits that are unique to the Baldrick character in each series – and choose our all-time favourite moments.

Episode 28: “A Lorry-Load Of Paper Clips”
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the occasional gleeful tangent.
In this episode, we are joined by budding comedy writer and Blackadder enthusiast Molly McDade, who talks about why Tim McInnerny’s Captain Darling is her favourite character in Blackadder Goes Forth. With Molly’s help, we also solve the age-old question of whether carrier pigeons really are in their prime in their mid-fifties.
After some … robust feedback from listeners, we take a belated look at Harry Enfield’s contribution to character sketch comedy in the 1990s while also listing our five favourite British sitcoms. Following up on the last episode’s trivia question, we also take a look at Lee Cornes’ three small roles in Blackadder and find out why Rowan Atkinson’s mention of a chap called Bob almost got the Blackadder team into legal hot water.

Episode 27: “A Viciously Sharp Slice Of Mango”
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the occasional gleeful tangent.
This time around, our special guest is writer David Quantick. Already a familiar name to music and comedy enthusiasts, his novel All My Colours came out in April 2019 to great acclaim and his first collection of short stories, And Other Stories, is due out in August 2025. David talks to us about taking comedy beyond the stodgily conventional and why Blackadder Goes Forth in particular is unique among sitcoms.
In our Scene Stealer segment, we also shine a spotlight on sitcom veteran Geoffrey Palmer, who makes a short but memorable appearance as Field-Marshal Sir Douglas Haig in the final episode of Blackadder Goes Forth. Cue a plan that proves less than cunning and a phrase that rhymes with “clucking bell”.

Episode 26: “My Fluffy Bunny Act”
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the occasional gleeful tangent.
Our special guest in this episode is fellow Blackadder enthusiast Dr Kel Pero, who casts an expert eye on the differences between the language used in the various series of Blackadder and reflects on why it is always such a treat for word nerds. And why you should never let historical accuracy get in the way of a good joke.
This time around, our Scene Stealer is Miranda Richardson as the enigmatic Nurse Mary in the General Hospital episode of Blackadder Goes Forth. Is she the spy? Is she innocent? Can she sing I May Be A Tiny Chimney Sweep But I’ve Got An Enormous Brush? Tune in and find out … that we don’t really know either.

Lord of Adders Black: A Blackadder Podcast
Episode 25: “Look Behind You, Mr Caesar!”
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the occasional gleeful tangent.
In this episode’s Major Star segment, we will be looking at Hugh Laurie’s thick-as-a-whale-omelette Prince George in Blackadder The Third. And who better to discuss this with us than our old friend Simon Osborne who makes a welcome return to the fold to reminisce about working with Hugh and also recalls his favourite moments from the screen and rehearsal room.
We also take a nerdilicious look at how the first three series of Blackadder each brought things to a close and how these matched up against the glorious finale that was Blackadder Goes Forth. And while we’re at it, we touch upon the strange phenomenon* of Blackadder actors strutting their stuff in music videos by British female pop artists.
(*Kate Bush pun intended) Oh … and we've started a new poll asking Blackadder fans to rate the four series of Blackadder in order of fluffiness.

Lord of Adders Black: A Blackadder Podcast
Episode 24: “Chiswick! Fresh Horses!”
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the occasional gleeful tangent.
This episode’s Major Star is actor, explorer and all-round force of nature Brian Blessed. As well as reflecting on his endearingly boisterous performance as King Richard IV in The Black Adder, we look at Brian’s early acting roles on stage and screen and marvel at his remarkable zest for life. And, on a more sinister note, we reveal how he inadvertently ended up influencing Coronation Street for well over half a century.
We also blow the dust off the Comic Relief special “Blackadder: The Cavalier Years” and discuss whether it deserves the rather, ahem, cavalier attitude that many of the Blackadder faithful have towards it.
Oh … and we've started a new poll asking Blackadder fans to rate the four series of Blackadder in order of fluffiness.

Bonus Episode 04: Full Interview with Mike Haskins
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the occasional gleeful tangent.
As we are taking a short break from recording this week, here is a bonus episode from our hallowed vaults: our full interview with comedy writer Mike Haskins, who waxes lyrical about his time writing for the likes of Griff Rhys Jones and Hale & Pace. He also talks about how Peter Cook ended up bequeathing his porn collection to Griff Rhys Jones …
Mike also gives us a comedy writer’s insight into what makes Blackadder such a memorable and influential creation and we revisit this and other comedies from the same era, with clips, laughs and larks a-plenty.
Oh … and we’ve started a new poll asking Blackadder fans to rate the four series of Blackadder in order of fluffiness.

Lord of Adders Black: A Blackadder Podcast
Episode 23: Diss and Distillery
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the occasional gleeful tangent.
In this first ever face-to-face episode, Michael takes a short break from leap-frogging around Europe to drop in on Ian in Cologne and record an episode in the same hallowed space, over the same microphone and drinking from the same bottle of scotch.
As well as reminiscing about our first foray into the dark and seedy underbelly of the podcasting world and revisiting some of our favourite moments, we explore the various incarnations of Blackadder himself, from the weaselly Prince Edmund to the waspish Captain Blackadder.
Oh … and we've started a new poll asking Blackadder fans to rate the four series of Blackadder in order of fluffiness.

Episode 22: Sacred Cows and Silly Bulls
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the occasional gleeful tangent.
Michael’s two favourite 80s sitcoms – one from the past, one from the future – come together to give us this episode’s Scene Stealer: Red Dwarf’s very own Chris Barrie. We talk about the leading roles at the centre of Chris’s curiously un-chequered career and his memorable appearance in Nob & Nobility as an evil French revolutionary who is “hung like a baby carrot and a couple of petits pois”.
Our special guest this time around is Tyler Adams, the brains behind the wonderful GoonPod podcast about the Goon Show and classic comedy in general. We talk about podcast envy and sacred cows among Blackadder fandom. Tyler also shares his theory on why Blackadder Goes Forth is the Sgt Pepper of the Blackadder oeuvre – and why that might not be the high praise it might seem to be.

Episode 21: Shout, Shout and Shout Again!
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the occasional gleeful tangent.
Rather than having a special guest on as usual, we decided it was time for another two-hander episode – and for a celebration of all things Stephen Fry!
We begin by taking a look at His Tweediness’s work outside Blackadder, including Fry & Laurie, Jeeves & Wooster and his winning way with the written word. And, of course, we take a look at Lord Melchett, General Melchett and the Duke of Wellington, the three main roles he played in the Blackadder canon.
Yes, “canon” – because only girls fight with swords these days …

Lord of Adders Black: A Blackadder Podcast
Episode 20: It’s The Moffatt Show!
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the occasional gleeful tangent.
In our twentieth episode, we cast a wary eye over the “Blackadders that got away” – the ideas for a fifth series that never got off the ground because they lacked potential or because they strayed too far from the core make-up of the series. Or because they were bollocks.
Having taken part in our Christmas quiz, our good friend and fellow podcaster Ciarán Moffatt returns for a huge roller coaster of a chat about Keinrick and Mossop, the thespians who fall foul of Blackadder in the Season 3 episode Sense & Senility. Needless to say, we also talk about the seasoned actors who played them, Kenneth Conner and Hugh Paddick, and the role they played in radio, film, television and in bringing the secret gay language Polari to the masses.

Lord of Adders Black: A Blackadder Podcast
Episode 19: Variations On A Theme
Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the occasional gleeful tangent.
In this episode, we tip our greasy hats to the man behind the music, Howard Goodall. As well as the many inventive variations on the Blackadder theme, he composed the music for some of the best-loved TV shows of the 80s, 90s and beyond. We look at his uniquely character-based approach to theme tunes and summon the Ghosts of Episodes Past to discuss the bleakly beautiful tones conjured up by Howard to accompany our heroes in their final push.
While a familiar voice to many people from his popular music and movie podcasts, our special guest Corey Morrissette is a genuine Blackadder Newbie, never having seen the series in his native Canada. Immersing himself in the six episodes cherry-picked by our listeners for our Newbie List, he talks about his favourite characters and plots, the inherent Englishness of the Blackadder universe and which of the four series he’ll be watching in full when he gets his hands on the box set.
Check out Corey’s podcasts on his brand-new website, www.cmpu.ca, which is due to go online any day now.
