In this season finale of Inside Out: A Yoga Therapy Podcast, we’re joined by our podcast producer, Matt Dean, for a conversation about nothing—yet somehow, we cover everything!
Sophie and Matt reflect on how their podcast journey began, from a networking event in early 2023 [which Sophie mistakes as mid 2024 in the episode... how time flies!] to the creation of this show. They discuss the magic of working as a team together at Kupod, and how Matt’s talent and humour have make podcasting feel effortless, even when it’s anything but.
Matt shares how podcasting has brought together everything he loves, giving him purpose and drive, and how he now helps others bring their own visions to life.
Tune in for a lighthearted, yet insightful conversation about the journey to give you a behind the scenes feel of Inside Out and a wrap-up of Season One.
Thank you for listening.

In this episode, Sophie and Jane take a deep dive into the science of stress, unpacking how our bodies are affected by the demands of modern life. Building on previous discussions about the vagus nerve and the autonomic nervous system, they explore how the fast-paced, always-on nature of the 24/7 world we live in is wiring us for chronic stress and burnout.
From the biological responses triggered by stress to the long-term impacts on our health, Sophie and Jane explain why we’re often stuck in fight-or-flight mode, constantly reacting to the pressures of modern life. But just as important as this stress response is the "rest and digest" or "tend and befriend" side of our nervous system, which is essential for balance and recovery. In this episode, they highlight how Yoga Therapy can help us reconnect with this calming, restorative side of the autonomic nervous system.
As they discuss ancient wisdom for modern lives, Sophie and Jane share practical tools from Yoga Therapy that can help regulate the nervous system, restore balance, and offer relief from the overwhelm of constant tension. If you’ve ever felt like stress is running the show, this episode offers science-backed insights and strategies for finding calm in the chaos.

They also reflect on the importance of self-compassion and how small, consistent steps are key to making lasting transformations.

In this episode, Sophie and Jane dive into the Yoga philosophy behind habit formation and change, exploring why so many people struggle with New Year’s resolutions. Recorded in the second week of February, the episode reflects on studies showing that around 80% of people give up on their resolutions by this time, raising the question: why do habits prove so persistent, and why is it so challenging to make lasting changes...
Has the shift in New Year’s Day from March 25th to January 1st (in 1752!) contributed to the struggle as we are encouraged to start our resolutions in the harsh winter months.
The conversation moves to a deeper exploration of habit and change from a Yoga Therapy perspective. Sophie and Jane highlight that successful change isn’t about willpower alone; it’s about understanding the intricate wiring of the nervous system, the role of our thoughts, the impact of our environment, and how all these factors shape our identity over time.
Jane explains how Yoga Therapy approaches habit change, particularly focusing on the resistance the mind often puts up when we try to create new habits. Together, they offer insights on how we can approach change in a more compassionate, effective way.

In this episode, Sophie and Jane delve into the profound role of community within Yoga, exploring its significance and the transformative impact of making Yoga accessible to all, especially those who feel it's beyond their reach.
In today's fast-paced world, feelings of isolation are increasingly common. Yoga offers more than individual well-being; it fosters a sense of belonging and connection. Studies have shown that practicing Yoga in a group setting can alleviate loneliness and enhance social bonds, providing participants with a supportive network that extends beyond the mat.
However, barriers such as income, language, culture, and body image often prevent many from accessing Yoga's benefits. Addressing these challenges is crucial to ensure inclusivity within the Yoga community. Initiatives like Sophie's Move & Heal CIC exemplify this commitment by bringing Yoga to underserved populations, demonstrating the empowering effects of reaching out to communities that might feel excluded from traditional Yoga spaces.
Sophie and Jane discuss the importance of dismantling these barriers and highlight how fostering inclusive Yoga communities can empower individuals, promote healing, and cultivate resilience. By extending Yoga's reach, we not only enhance personal well-being but also strengthen the fabric of our communities.
Join us as we explore how embracing diversity and inclusivity in Yoga can transform lives and build stronger, more connected communities.

Important Listener Information:
In this episode, we discuss the topics of sexual abuse and coercive control amongst other things. As Yoga Therapists, we both want to make it absolutely clear that we do not recommend or condone engaging in any sexual acts whatsoever in any type of Yoga class—group or one-to-one. If you have experienced sexual trauma or coercion, or are simply interested and curious in learning more about your sexuality, we strongly encourage seeking support from a qualified healthcare professional.
Your GP can provide guidance and signpost you to a licensed sexual therapist for appropriate care.
If discussions around sexual abuse or coercive control are sensitive topics for you, please listen with care or consider skipping this episode.
Here, Sophie and Jane open up a vital and sensitive conversation about ethics in Yoga—what it means to be an ethical Yoga Teacher, and how we can be students in spaces that are truly safe and supportive.
Inspired by the new investigative series from BBC Sounds and Radio 4, The Bad Guru: World of Secrets, they reflect on troubling stories emerging from certain Yoga communities—specifically allegations of coercion, grooming, and abuse connected to the Atman Federation and its London-based centre, Tara Yoga. They explore how something as powerful as Yoga can, in some cases, be distorted into something deeply harmful.
This conversation isn’t about sensationalism—it’s about truth, safety, and the responsibility we all carry in Yoga spaces. With compassion and care, Sophie and Jane discuss how we might recognise red flags, hold space for those affected, and stay rooted in the non-harming principles that form the heart of true Yoga.
This is the start of a wider conversation we hope continues in our communities, in our classes, and within ourselves.

In this episode, Sophie Coggins shares her story—how she went from studying Psychology, to working as an Occupational Therapist in the NHS, to becoming a Yoga Therapist and founding Move & Heal CIC.
It's been a winding path for her, shaped by deep personal loss, a passion for people, and a drive to bring healing where it’s needed most. After the passing of her wonderful Dad, she set off travelling the world—and everywhere she went, she found Yoga. Or maybe Yoga found her. Either way, it became her lifeline.
Here, she talks about the teachers who shaped her, including her first Yoga teacher Marilyn, and how she blended her therapy background into Yoga and how this came together to form the foundation of the work she does today—making Yoga accessible, therapeutic, and real for people living with long-term health conditions such as chronic and persistent pain.
You’ll hear how this led Sophie to set up Move & Heal CIC and how its mission is to bring holistic, person-centred care to communities across Greater Manchester.
Whether you’re curious about Yoga, thinking you "can't do Yoga", or just love hearing people’s real-life journeys—this episode is for you.

In this episode, Sophie gets to do one of her favourite things: Sit back and listen to her Teacher and co-host, Jane Craggs, share her story. And trust me, it’s a good one.
Jane is a Yoga educator, community builder, and fierce advocate for justice in the Yoga world. She’s also the only Svastha Yoga Therapy teacher trainer in the UK—and the teacher who guided me through my own training journey.
We chat about her journey into Yoga back in the 90s, how she went from theatre production to yoga teacher training in Madrid, to opening Manchester’s first independent Yoga studio in the Northern Quarter. Jane’s taught Yoga in prisons, with older adults, and across diverse communities. Her inclusive, no-nonsense approach is exactly what this podcast is all about.
Get ready for stories that inspire, make you laugh, and maybe challenge how you think about Yoga.
