Welcome to From Complex to Queens, Home Run Applesauce’s podcast focusing on the Mets’ minor league system. After a 3 week break and some vacation time, we’re back to break down what was a very interesting trade deadline around the league. There are definitely some teams that were smart…and some teams that were not. We can’t help but go on for a bit about some of the “crazier” deals that went down before we finally get to the Mets. As for what the Mets did, we’re generally pretty big fans. By and large, they traded a set of replaceable assets for significant upgrades. Even if they made marginal overpays in a vacuum, the team can leverage their pitching development apparatus to magic up another set of prospects to trade in the future. There’s an argument that another bat or a SP would’ve helped, but it’s difficult to speculate on conversations we don’t know much about. The Mets made two selections last night: Pick 38, Comp Balance Round A*: 2B Mitch Voit, Michigan Pick 102, Round 3: SS Antonio Jimenez, UCF *This is the Mets’ 1st round pick, which was moved down 10 spots for spending beyond the second tax level We can already see the Mets’ getting creative to overcome the limitation they face in the draft this year, targeting two college hitters with positive traits but an obvious flaw. It’s a strategy that makes a lot of sense, though not one that is without faults. It also sets the Mets up to do some interesting things on Day 2. We cover all that as well as our favorite non-Mets moments from the first night of the draft, and we’ll have more tomorrow to cover everything from rounds four through twenty. That would give the FCTQ crew yet another correctly predicted draft pick, even if our conviction in any prep bat we talk about pre-draft is very low.
