Episode 163: Infectious Generosity – Part I

We discovered Chris Anderson's 2024 book, Infectious Generosity, on a bestseller list, and its title immediately captured our interest.

Given that many health books we've read emphasize the importance of gratitude and generosity, we wanted to delve into how generosity impacts our health and well-being.

In this initial episode, we provide background on the origins of TED Talks: 'Ideas Worth Spreading' and how Chris Anderson took over, subsequently deciding to share his own idea—how to inspire generosity on a global scale.

We've also invited Carolyn Bennett Sullivan, an author and TEDx speaker, to join us for this series.

Is animal-based protein really the original superfood, or is there more to the story?

What about plants? The Health Geeks are back with more reactions to Dr. Gabrielle Lyon’s Forever Strong: A New Science-Based Strategy for Aging Well (2023).

In this episode, we break down the chemistry of protein, why leucine matters, and how the mTOR pathway works. But we also ask: Should we accept all her claims at face value?

You’ll hear our first takes on eating more protein and why fiber still deserves a seat at the table. Plus, we leave you with a few ideas to chew on.

Episode 159:  Forever Strong – PART III

We're continuing our discussion on Dr. Gabrielle Lyon's book, "FOREVER STRONG: New Science-based Strategy for Aging Well" (2023). In this episode we focus on nutritional guidelines (WHAT).

We explore the shifts between plant-based and meat-derived dietary recommendations over the years. We'll take a historical journey to meet some key figures – individuals, corporations, and even the US government – who have influenced our understanding of nutrition. (EDUCATE)

We also examine Dr. Lyon's recommendations, which differ from current RDA guidelines, and aim to clarify these distinctions. Our discussion included some questions regarding Dr. Lyon's perspective.

Kristen shares her professional insights (LINK), particularly emphasizing: 1) the underutilization of dietitians within the medical system, and 2) the tendency of some influencers to continue to bash an outdated food pyramid.

Kristen, Eleanor, and Tim also discuss their protein intake and reflect on the challenges of meeting Dr. Lyon's recommendations.

Finally, we'll give you (LEAVE) a fun task to evaluate your personal protein consumption.

Episode 158: Forever Strong – PART II

We hope you're enjoying our more in-depth approach to book reviews. In this episode, "Forever Strong – PART II," we continue to explore Dr. Gabrielle Lyon's "FOREVER STRONG: New Science-based Strategy for Aging Well. (2023)"

This time, our focus (the WHAT) is on the crucial role of healthy muscle mass in promoting longevity. To further your understanding (the EDUCATE), we delve into the inflammatory process and its connection to exercise, the function of mitochondria in muscle activity, address the common question of whether muscle loss is an inevitable part of aging, and discuss the link between muscle health and fatigue.

To make these concepts more relatable (the LINK), we connect Dr. Lyon's insights across different age groups with practical examples, such as Kristen's personal strength training experience. Finally (the LEAVE), we share some straightforward practices you can easily integrate into your daily routine to help maintain or build your muscle health.

We'd love to hear your thoughts on this episode!

Episode 157: Forever Strong – PART I

New Podcast format: We’re switching things up—slowing down and digging deeper.

Instead of cramming one book into one episode, we’re breaking it into bite-sized conversations that focus on one practical idea at a time.

We will structure our conversation around WELL – What, Educate, Link, and Leave.  There will be several episodes on FOREVER STRONG: New Science-based Strategy for Aging Well by Dr. Gabrielle Lyon (2023)

In this episode, WHAT we start talking about is Dr. Lyon’s call for a paradigm shift from fat-focused to muscle-centric medicine.

We EXPLAIN (Educate) some basic concepts of muscle and metabolism. We explore her idea about muscle as an endocrine organ, and the health protective benefits of healthy muscle.

We LINK some of these ideas to the trending use of GLP-1 for weight loss and share some personal stories.

We LEAVE you with an idea to try until you tune in to our next podcast on this book!   Let us know what you think about our new format!

Episode 149: Rest

How does a Health Geek get confused and read the wrong book?

Maybe they didn’t get enough REST?

Kristen read a book called REST: 7 Types of Rest to Eliminate Burnout, Reduce Stress, and Overcome Anxiety by Allison Hay (2023).

This was the book we selected to read together, but Eleanor picked up a book called REST: Why You Get More Done When You Work Less (2018) by Alex Soojung-Kim Pang.

We discovered this discrepancy when we got to the podcast studio, and it turned out to be a wonderful mistake.

We had fun comparing notes from these two authors’ perspectives.
