Click or Clash Relationships

Dr. Suzanne Vickberg, a social personality psychologist and co-author of “Business Chemistry”, joins Deidre and JG to share “wiZdoms” on navigating relationships within the workplace and in our personal lives.

Curious why you click with some people, yet clash with others? While it’s great to click and difficult to clash, there is a way to find a common ground and establish harmony from our differences.

This episode, “Dr. Suz” shares her insights from her book “Business Chemistry”, in which she identifies four different working styles that are common amongst people in the workplace. The key to avoiding clash relationships is to acknowledge these differences and learn to appreciate them. If you’re looking to strengthen relationships with people from all walks of life and even cope with stress, Dr. Suz is here to help us all.

WIZDOMS ON CLICK OR CLASH RELATIONSHIPS

* The pioneer, guardian, driver, and integrator. These are the names of the four main working styles in Dr. Suz’s “Business Chemistry”. Creating strong relationships starts here, by understanding these differences.

* Adapting & Flexing. Your working style is not a concrete definition of who you are. You can and should adapt and change your style to better work with the people around you.

* Havoc vs Harmony. Does it seem impossible to create harmony with the people that you clash with? Well, rest assured, it is possible to avoid havoc if you acknowledge your differences and play to your strengths while learning from others.

* Avoid the “why can’t you do it this way?” mentality. Thinking your idea is the only answer could lead to more tension. Instead, value how different perspectives can actually help! You might be surprised!

* Communication & Engagement. Building strong relationships is all about discussion. The more you understand about the people that you work with, the easier it is to find success.

* When stress factors in. We all experience stress differently and at different magnitudes. Considering how stress impacts us differently can help you overcome your differences and work better together!

* Think outside the box. We can all learn from each other. Don’t be afraid to take some lessons from everyone. Jump in and see what you can learn, you never know what you might walk away with!

LISTENERS: How will you strengthen your relationships? Share your experiences and “wiZdoms” with us! Either leave us a voicemail at 646-653-9278 or send us an email. We may talk about it - or we may even talk with YOU - on the air!

Inventing Your Reinvention

Angelique Miles, once a music industry power house, joins Deidre and JG to share “wiZdoms” and insights on reinventing yourself when you simply have no other choice.

While change is natural, what happens when we are uprooted and forced to adapt to a new reality? We often dream of a certain future for ourselves, but when we are met with the unexpected, it can be challenging to find success again.

This episode, Angelique Miles joins GutwiZdom to share her inspiring story about climbing back to the top after her success in the music industry came to a sudden halt. Overcoming fear and many obstacles, Angelique transformed her lifestyle and took advantage of the opportunity to reinvent herself to find happiness and success.

WIZDOMS TO INVENT YOUR REINVENTION

* Resilience, Reliance, & Renewal. These are the three emotional components to identify that help us the most when we are forced to reinvent ourselves.

* Find who you can really trust. In the midst of the storm, find your blessings and identify the people that will truly be there to support you.

* Remember who you really are. While change and transitioning can be intimidating, don’t lose sight of what makes you, you!

* Believe in yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself to change, who will? Have the power to know that you can, and you will, reinvent yourself, and find new success. Many materials things can be taken away from you. However, your talent, your YOU, cannot!

* Have faith in the universe. Everything happens for a reason, so don’t lose sight of the light at the end of the tunnel.

* Plan your exit. Change will happen; be prepared to adapt and find a new path. You might even want to think about the worst-case scenario and plan for it, while things are awesome!

* Grab the bull by the horns. Have the courage and the confidence to face the challenges that come your way. Get out there and start acting on what makes you happy! Taking action is always a great remedy to stare fear down.  Take control of what you can!

Secrets to Stopping Self-Sabotage

Lisa Lieberman-Wang joins Deidre and JG to share “wiZdoms” on the secrets to squelch self-sabotaging behavior.

Sometimes it seems that we just can’t get out of our own way.  We believe we want to achieve certain goals, and can often sabotage ourselves with behaviors that will prevent us from achieving the things we say we want!

Joining GutwiZdom in this episode, Lisa Lieberman-Wang, a relationship and emotional breakthrough expert and the author of the bestselling book, FINE to FAB, Lisa shares her incredible story about how she quit her self-sabotaging behaviors, and how you can too!

Download your free copy of Lisa’s E-book here and listen to the full episode for more great “wiZdoms”!

WIZDOMS FOR STOPPING SELF-SABOTAGE

* First ask yourself this question. Do you want help? If you want to stop self-sabotaging, you must be open to getting help.
* Stop thinking you’re not good enough. If we feel we’re not good enough, we will find things in our life to support that belief. This all starts at a very young age, like a seed being planted, but we can change those beliefs!
* Be“lie”f. We believe the lies we tell ourselves, and maybe the lies others have told us about ourselves. We say, “I can’t do that” or “this is too hard” but these beliefs may actually be false!
* Acknowledge your fear or doubt. When we simply change one self-sabotaging behavior, and replace it with another self-sabotaging behavior, we’re not getting to the root cause and eliminating our own worst enemy – ourselves! For example, if we want to lose weight and we change our habit of eating out more than 1x per week, that’s not going to help us achieve our goal of losing weight if we still binge eat cookies at midnight.
* Take inventory of life’s lessons and beliefs. What is it that made us think this way about ourselves? Change the model and create new lessons.
* Stop waiting for perfection. If we wait for perfection, we will take no action. If we take no action we will always fail.
* Make peace, practice gratitude and celebrate! Gratitude is not just an attitude, it’s a behavior and something that can be practiced every single day.  If you’re interested in the GutwiZdom Journal of Gratitude, email Deidre at:  dk@gutwizdom.com for your gift!

Unsafe Thinking!

Author Jonah Sachs joins GutwiZdom to talk about his new book “Unsafe Thinking” and provides inspiration and a practical guide on how to truly think out of the box when we feel like we can’t, or don’t know how to.

In work and in life, we are constantly faced with rapid change. Some of us respond creatively to adapt to the change, and even help with creative break-throughs to make the change happen.  Yet, others feel more comfortable in the space of “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it”

Jonah Sachs, author of “Unsafe Thinking: How to be nimble and bold when you need it most” and the co-founder of Free Range Solutions, a brand and innovation company, joined Deidre and JG this week to chat about how anxiety can actually be fuel for creativity, as well as when to trust your gut instinct and when to challenge it.

Jonah interviewed over 100 rule-breaking innovators to find out what makes them tick, including a rock climber, a chess grandmaster, and an NBA coach, just to name a few and he shared some of his amazing “wiZdoms” with us. Check them out below and listen to our episode for more!

WIZDOMS FOR UNSAFE THINKING

* Embrace the change. When the world changes around us and challenges us to change, we tend to act and think the same way we always have.

* Practice self-awareness. If we decide to look inward and challenge ourselves first, we use different parts of our brains and come up with ideas we may not have thought of before. You have to change yourself before you can change the world.

* Challenge your intuition. Our intuition gets really good if you are making the same decisions over and over again, but if you change things up it’s hard for your intuition to adapt.

* Better leaders are humble. Leaders are usually thought of as decisive, someone who always knows what to do, someone you want to follow. We are actually more likely to follow leaders that are humble and have more questions than answers.

* Try something new. We become specialized in our routines. Do something you’re terrible at and change up the routine to become more creative. Push yourself to grow a little bit by trying something that you are interested in, but might not be very good at. Get out of your comfort zone!

* Find a role model. Role models are so important because they change the way we think and we can identify with a person rather than an idea.

LISTENERS: How will you practice unsafe thinking? Share your experiences and “wiZdoms” with us! Either leave us a voicemail at 646-653-9278 or send us an email. We may talk about it - or we may even talk with YOU - on the air!

Respect in the Workplace!

David Freedman of PEAR Core Solutions joins Deidre and JG to share how disrespect in a workplace can turn into harassment.

Sexual harassment & discrimination in our workplaces is at epidemic proportions and a hostile workplace environment, which includes sexual harassment, is no longer being shoved under the proverbial corporate carpet.

David Freedman, Vice President of Human Capital Management at PEAR Core Solutions, shares his “wiZdoms” on what we all need to know as employees and employers about being respectful and avoiding a harassment claim.

Deidre also shares with us a very personal story in this episode. You’ll really want to hear this one!

DAVE'S WORKPLACE WIZDOMS

“Incivility is a gateway drug to harassment” -Sharon Masling, Chief of Staff at the EEOC

* No jokes allowed? Isolated incidents of teasing or offhand comments can happen at work. It becomes a problem when the frequency and severity leads to a hostile or offensive environment or adverse employment decisions

* If someone makes you uncomfortable, address it with the person. Do it respectfully, do it privately, and don’t do it when you’re angry.

* Use your empathy: Try to put yourself in the other person’s shoes, “what would I have said?”

* Know how to communicate. Use the manners your parents (hopefully) taught you. Listen more than you speak. Take a breath before you say something in a disrespectful tone.

* Recognize what disrespect is not. A tough boss with high expectations or one that asks you to do more than what is in your job description is not harassment.

LISTENERS: Do you work in a disrespectful environment? Have you ever experienced or witnessed harassment? Share your experiences and “wiZdoms” with us! Either leave us a voicemail at 646-653-9278 or send us an email. We may talk about it - or we may even talk with YOU - on the air!

Innovation through quirkiness with guest Dr. Melissa Schilling

Dr. Schilling, one of the world’s leading experts on innovation, joins us in-studio to share the science behind the traits, and quirks, that increase the likelihood of success in breakthrough innovation.

We learn about the commonalities of some of the greatest breakthrough innovators – from Albert Einstein to Steve Jobs to Elon Musk, and what it is about them that’s different than a typical innovator…and what patterns they have in common.

Dr. Melissa Schilling, one of the world's leading experts on innovation, joined Deidre and JG in the GutwiZdom studio to discuss how true innovation – and the ability to innovate again and again – comes from allowing your personal, social, and emotional quirkiness to break through.

Dr. Schilling is the John Herzog Family professor of management and organizations at New York University's Stern School of Business, and one of the world's leading experts on innovation. Her latest book, Quirky, explores the themes we discussed in this episode. She has also authored the textbook, Strategic Management of Technological Innovation (now in its fifth edition) and coauthored of Strategic Management: An Integrated Approach (now in its 12th edition).

WIZDOMS ON HOW TO BE A BREAKTHROUGH INNOVATOR

* Be independent: Don’t worry about your thoughts seeming “normal.” If you allow yourself to think differently than others, you may find yourself thinking more innovative thoughts.
* Don’t be afraid to be contrarian: You don’t have to be a jerk, but be brave enough to say, “I disagree” and then present your reasoning. Avoid “going along to get along.”
* Be open to new experiences and ideas: Allow yourself to feel uncomfortable, since this is how you stretch your experiences, take in new ideas, and come up with your own innovative ideas.
* Follow through: The best ideas are nothing without working hard to make things happen.
* Be idealistic. The best innovators have idealistic goals, and if those goals resonate with others, they will rally around the innovator to help make those goals a reality.
* Take time be alone: Your best ideas may come when you spend time alone to think. This also goes for children; don’t be afraid to let children spend un-structured time and to be alone – without technology/screens.

IN THE WORKPLACE:

* Brainstorming groups don’t work: Let employees work on their own to come up with innovative ideas. Then, bring them together to share their ideas.
* Motivate with idealism: Your employees will respond better to big, idealistic goals rather than goals that result in cash rewards.

LISTENERS: Are you an innovator? Are you quirky? Do your quirks help you to innovate? Share your experiences and “wiZdoms” with us! Either leave us a voicemail at 646-653-9278 or send us an email. We may talk about it - or we may even talk with YOU - on the air!

Generation Z, Part 2: Think like a Gen-Z’er

Jonah Stillman returns to the GutwiZdom studio! Born into the “Z” generation, Jonah - a recent high-school graduate and co-author of “Gen Z @ Work” - joins Deidre and JG to enlighten us on how the world is changing, and what we need to do about it.

Move over Millennials!  Generation “Z” is here, and they are the empowered generation! Generation Z is currently the largest population segment ever – larger than the Baby Boomer, Gen X, and Millennial generations. Times have changed and Generation Z is beginning to assert themselves and their values in BIG ways – they’re completely transforming workplaces, turning higher education on it’s head, and have dramatically different buying behaviors!

The last time Jonah Stillman joined us in the GutwiZdom studio, he was joined by his father talking about their book Gen Z @ Work.  Jonah joined Deidre and JG for this amazing episode to further explore exactly how different Gen Z really is, straight from a Gen Z’er himself! For more information about Jonah and his book, visit www.genzguru.com

WIZDOMS TO THINK LIKE GEN Z

* Learn to learn from failure. Gen Z is not afraid to fail because you can always learn from your mistakes!

* Take a gap year. Taking the time to find out who you really are is important to Gen Z. They are taking gap years to get internships and work experience to find out what they really like to do instead of jumping right into college.

* Learn “just in time”, not “just in case”. The way Gen Z learns is so different than previous generations. They can learn everything they need online and in minutes.

* Physical vs. digital. Gen Z doesn’t have a preference about the physical or digital world. They don’t care about buying products online or in-store, what does matter to them is speed, convenience, price, and getting what they want in the most efficient way possible.

* Be open minded. Embrace the fact that Gen Z is different and be open to the changes they’re creating!

GutwiZdom Lives It Up!

Morning television talk show host, Donna Drake, joins Deidre and JG for an episode filled with the truths about where hope and determination can lead! A small-town gal from St. Louis who created a television show that is now in several US cities, Donna shares how she got what she hoped for, and how we all can, too!

Hope is the belief that circumstances will get better. It's not a wish for things to get better -- it's the actual belief, the knowledge that things will get better, no matter how big or small.

Donna Drake, television talk show host of “Live It Up” joined Deidre and JG this week to share her inspirational journey and the “wiZdoms” she learned along the way. Donna has interviewed some of the world’s best-known motivational experts and she shares real stories from real people.

Find out more about “Live It Up” at www.liveituptvshow.com or email Donna at liveituptvshow@gmail.com.

DONNA'S WIZDOMS FOR HOPE

* Don’t let your fear stop you. Look back at everything you have accomplished so far. Tell yourself, “if I can do all of that, I can do this.” You need to have courage and commitment to overcome fear.

* Surround yourself with a team you can trust. Find the people that believe in you, collaborate with you, and are always on your team. You will always need these people in your life.

* Don’t give up if you fail. When Donna interviewed Evander Holyfield, he told her about something his mom said to him that resonated with him: “If every time you fail, you run off and try something else, you won’t be successful at anything.” If you don’t succeed the first time, keep getting back up and do it again.

* Everyone can learn something from another person. Famous or not, everyone has a story to tell and what we can you share about our journeys may help someone else one day.

The Mind of the Leader!

Mindfulness experts, Rasmus Hougaard and Jacqueline Carter join your GutwiZdom hosts, Deidre and JG to talk about their new book, “The Mind of The Leader” and the 3 essential qualities you need to be an inspiring great leader!

With billions of dollars spent on leadership development and training, why do employees still find their leaders so un-inspiring?

Rasmus Hougaard and Jacqueline Carter – authors of “The Mind of the Leader” interviewed over 35,000 leaders and determined that by understanding how our own minds work, only then can we really be better at leading others.

Their company, Potential Project, is recognized as a leading International authority on training the mind to be more focused, effective and clear.

LEADERSHIP WIZDOMS

* Put people at the center of your strategy. If we take care of our people, they will take care of our customers!

* Learn about yourself first. If we don’t understand ourselves as leaders, we won’t be able to lead others. Self-awareness is the first step on the ladder to being a great leader.

* Leadership is not about your position. It is less about what you do and more about how you behave! Rasmus gave us an amazing quote during the show, “leadership is about un-learning management and re-learning being a human.”

* There is a direct relationship between focus and effectiveness. It’s okay to let your mind wander, in fact, it’s normal! BUT, we can train our brains to overcome it and be more effective. If you’re not engaged with your people when you’re with them, they will know, and their engagement will go down.

* Use mindfulness to improve focus. Being more mindful is a way to manage our minds better. Choose when to be creative and be aware of your ideas, but also choose when to be strategic and focus on the ideas that are most important.

* The 3 foundational qualities all leaders need today.

* Mindfulness: The ability to be focused and to have self-awareness. You will be lost without them!
* Selflessness: Leading others is about others. It means taking the blame, giving the stage to the people you’re leading, and putting others first.
* Compassion: The ability to want to see others to be successful. People want to know their leaders have their back and then there will be more engagement!

* Wendy will mix and match what's in your closet to create new looks from head to toe that you never would have imagined on your own, maximizing the investment you have already made.

* If you're not 100% confident shopping for these items yourself, Wendy will come with you to personally assist! (Personal Shopping services available).
* She will take photos of your new outfits and create a digital "look book" which you can refer to going forward so you never have to ask, "What should I wear?"

Image Makeover:

* Wendy will guide you as to what your best style could be… she will work with you to give you a personalized image consult and makeover to help you confidently portray to the world who you are.

The Real World:

Open your Mind

Deidre and JG delve into the barriers in our brains that prevent us from achieving what we want.

So many of us struggle with decision making. Our egos and blind spots are the two biggest barriers in our brains that make it difficult for us to objectively see what’s true, and if you can’t see what’s true, how can you make a good decision? Deidre and JG discuss some of the ideas from Ray Dalio’s book, Principles and how we can all be more radically open-minded!

Another topic they cover is the Johari window. The Johari window is broken into four quadrants that show people how they see themselves and how others see them.

* Open Area: This is the information we know about ourselves and information that others also know about us.
* Hidden Area: This is information we know about ourselves, but we don’t want to share with others.
* Blind Spot: This information is known to others, but is not known to ourselves.
* Unknown Area: This information is unknown to us and to others.

OPEN-MINDED WIZDOMS

* Beware the big ego. Our ego barrier, as described in Ray Dalio’s book, Principles, is our subliminal defense mechanism, it makes it hard for us to accept our weaknesses and mistakes, and holds our deep seeded needs and fears.

* Be radically open-minded. Recognize that you don’t know what you don’t know and what you can learn from others.

* Decision making is a two-step process. Radically open your mind and sincerely believe that you might not know the best possible path. First get all of your information and then make your decision.

* Watch out for the close-minded. Close-minded people don’t want their ideas challenged, have big egos, are not usually very humble, and are more likely to make statements instead of asking questions.

Great at Work

Professor Morten Hansen joins Deidre and JG to share the results of his research on working smarter, not harder.

Professor Morten Hansen, U.C. Berkeley professor and author of Great at Work, was with us this week to discuss his 7 principles that will help you do less, work better, achieve more, and become a top performer.

Listen to the episode for more of Professor Hansen’s “wiZdoms” and check out his website www.Mortenhansen.com to take his quiz to find out where you stand in his research!

WIZDOMS FOR TOP PERFORMERS

* Do less, then obsess. Instead of over-whelming yourself with too much work, concentrate on a few things and go all in on those tasks. Then, give those tasks your undivided attention.

* Redesign your work. Be innovative when it comes to the way you do your work. Once you have fewer tasks to give 100% to, you can find a better way of getting the work done.

* Don’t just learn, loop. Continue to develop and work on being better than you were the day before. Practice does not make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect!

* Passion and purpose. There needs to be a combination of both passion and purpose. Passion alone won’t make you a top performer, you need to also have a contribution mindset.

* Forceful champions. Not only do you need to learn to advocate for your ideas, but you also need to be able to overcome any obstacles in the way and persuade people to support you.

* Over-collaborating. There is such a thing as too much collaboration! Spending too much time collaborating is a waste of time and a distraction from focus.

LISTENERS: How will you start to focus? Share your experiences and “wiZdoms” with us! Either leave us a voicemail at 1-646-653-9278 or send us an email. We may talk about it - or we may even talk with YOU - on the air!

The Relationship Protocol with guest Debra Roberts

Debra Roberts joins Deidre and JG to discuss her simple and practical approach to making relationships and communication less complicated.

We were thrilled to be joined by relationship expert Debra Roberts, LCSW this week! Debra is an experienced speaker, trainer, and clinical social worker, and she has developed what she calls the Relationship Protocol. This is a simple and practical template to having healthier relationships and making communication less complicated.

Debra’s recently published book (The Relationship Protocol) explains the protocol in depth and is an easy-to-read self-help guide for improving your relationships. Debra was kind enough to stop by our studio and discuss the book. Please listen to the episode for the fascinating details, including more on the WiZdoms below that Debra shared with us.

DEBRA'S RELATIONSHIP WIZDOMS
What is a good response for when someone tells you “you’re not listening to me?”
"Tell me what you mean. What am I not listening to?"

How do you have tough conversations? Conversations you don’t really want to have but need to?
First, you want to pick a good time and environment (for example, don’t jump on someone the moment they get to the office in the morning, or at home don’t choose the time right before bed).

When you start the conversation, state your intentions clearly up front. Here are three ways to get started. “I want to get along with you. I don’t want to fight with you. I want to be closer to you.” You can use any or all of these, depending on the situation.

What do you do when you know you are right but the other person doesn’t agree?
Winning has no place in a relationship. It’s not about being right. It’s a dialogue, not a monologue. Think of an umbrella over both of you and both of you are holding onto the handle. That umbrella is the relationship. You’re in it together. It can’t be about being right at the other person’s expense. Start the conversation using the tip above.

What is a critical aspect of successful relationships?
Kindness is critical. When we are kind, people feel safe. When people feel safe, there is trust.

How do we show people that we value the relationship?
Words and actions both convey this. What’s important is knowing HOW each person needs to be told or shown that you value them. There are no magic words or actions that work for everyone.

LISTENERS: Do you have your own tips for keeping your relationships healthy? Share your experiences and “wiZdoms” with us! Either leave us a voicemail at 1-646-653-9278 or send us an email. We may talk about it - or we may even talk with YOU - on the air!

When Help Hurts

Kirby Brown, daughter of Ginny Brown, sought self-help measures to grow both professionally and personally. Unfortunately, a tragedy unfolded that could have been avoided.

The Self-help industry is a multi-billion-dollar industry valued at over $9.9 billion. It’s scary to think that an industry this large has no regulations or laws, and practitioners are not required to have the proper credentials or be held accountable for their actions.

Ginny Brown joined us this week to share with our listeners the dangers of the self-help industry and why she founded SEEK Safely, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose mission is to guide and educate consumers, and to keep self-help practitioners accountable for their actions through legislation.

Ginny shared the emotional story of how her daughter Kirby tragically died seeking personal and professional growth.  Kirby, who she says was “drunk on life” and lived outside of the box, was a seeker. She was always looking for ways to improve herself and she tragically lost her life when she sought help from an unqualified self-help guru during a spiritual retreat.

Ginny hopes that by sharing Kirby’s story that listeners will learn the red flags you need to know to protect yourself and others so that these tragedies do not continue.

SELF-HELP WIZDOMS

How can you tell the difference between a self-help scam and the real deal?
People can, and do, lie about their credentials. Do your due diligence. Research, ask questions, check references. Most importantly, listen to your GUT! We have all been in a situation when we hear our inner voice telling us that something isn’t right. Pay attention to that voice! We also have to be self-aware of our own vulnerabilities. We tend to look for self-help when we are at our most vulnerable, but we still need to be able to make rational judgements despite our emotions.

Why don’t we hear about the dangers of the self-help industry more often?
If someone is in a situation where they seek out self-help and the program or the guru doesn’t help them achieve what they wanted to achieve, a lot of times the guru will convince them that it’s their fault. Saying that they didn’t work hard enough or were not smart enough to be successful when there is no research or science behind what they’re teaching. People feel ashamed when they feel like they have failed, or that they have been scammed.

What do you want Kirby’s legacy to be?
Whatever you’re seeking, make sure you protect yourself. Our mission is to empower the seeker to be more self-aware, ask more questions, promote ethics and safety in the industry, and get legislation passed for basic guidelines. SEEK stands for self-empowerment though education and knowledge. We have resources on our website, www.SEEKsafely.org so consumers can use them to educate themselves on red-flags and for practitioners to sign a promise of ethics in the industry. I hope for Kirby’s legacy to be that who she was and the way she lived her life will inspire people to live with more passion and more joy and that her death can serve as a cautionary tale for others to live with an open heart and open eyes.

Home Employee Hazards

The Nationwide Household HR expert, Guy Maddalone from GTM Payroll, joins Deidre & JG to chat about the rules and regulations that homeowners need to follow if they employ any kind of household help.

You may not know that the rules involved in employing household workers – which includes; nannies, senior caregivers, housekeepers, or even personal assistants, are very similar to the rules you need to follow as a business owner that has employees!

Studies show that out of the 2 million workers that are considered “domestic help workers”, only 200,000 of that population of employees are properly (legally) accounted for. Paying your employees cash under the table, or not having the proper insurance to protect your household employees could lead to steep fines and worse.

Guy Maddalone, the Founder and CEO of GTM Payroll, and the author of How to Hire a Caregiver for Your Senior and How to Hire a Nanny, joined Deidre & JG this week to share his household help “wiZdoms!” For more information about Guy, and his expertise, visit www.GTM.com

WIZDOMS TO AVOID WITH EMPLOYEES AT HOME

* Have clear conversations about pay. When negotiating pay with your household help, keep in mind the difference between gross pay and net pay. If your nanny says he/she needs to take home $600 week, make sure you keep in mind the additional costs (employer responsible taxes) of employing someone in your home to avoid a miscalculation and, tremendous fines.

* Set clear guidelines about hours. In addition to negotiating compensation, the number of hours your household help works needs to be spoken about. Don’t forget that home workers are subject to overtime. Figure out how many hours you are going to need them to work and keep accurate records.

* Lay out the household rules. Much like an employee handbook in a corporation lays out the rules of the employment, a written work agreement should be created for household employees, as well. Create a time off policy, how much notice should they give if they are going to call out sick, what can and can’t they use in your home?

* If you take the risk of hiring an undocumented worker: These household workers should be treated the same and you need to follow the same rules. Having proof of employment and income might even help them down the road toward becoming a citizen.

* If your household worker gets hurt while working: Many people think that their homeowner’s insurance will cover the employee’s injuries, but this is not the case. The homeowner will be responsible for paying out of pocket for all medical costs. And, let’s not forget that a worker’s compensation claim that gets in the “system” will trail back to you, the employer, and if you haven’t been classifying this employee correctly the trouble first begins.

* There are benefits! Giving paystubs to household employees can help them get credit cards or apply for a loan or mortgage. Additionally, they will have the ability to apply for unemployment if they ever need it. Employees will also have worker’s compensation and disability benefits and social security benefits. But most importantly, you and your employee are not committing tax evasion!

Self-Esteem WiZdoms

Psychologist, Dr. Glenn Doyle returns to GutwiZdom to chat about the myths and mystery about self-esteem!

What is self-esteem? There are plenty of myths and misconceptions about what it means to have high self-esteem. It’s different from self-confidence, competency, egotism, and narcissism.

Self-esteem is comprised of two concepts:

* Worthiness: The feeling that we deserve good things to happen to us in our lives and that we have value as a human being.
* Efficacy: The feeling that we can handle whatever life throws at us.

Dr. Glenn Doyle joined us this week to provide his “wiZdoms” an educate listeners on what it means to have high self-esteem and how to improve it. Dr. Doyle is a licensed psychologist, the Founder and Director of The Doyle Practice in Chicago and Washington DC, and the author of the self-development blog, www.useyourdamnskills.com. You can find Dr. Doyle on Facebook and at his new site, www.realisticlifechange.com!

Dr. Doyle shared with us the six pillars of self-esteem, (as defined by Dr. Nathaniel Branden’s concepts on self-esteem), below!

THE SIX PILLARS OF SELF-ESTEEM

* The practice of living consciously. Our decision to think or not to think, to engage with the world around us or to operate on auto pilot. It’s very hard to build high self-esteem if we’re living passively. Make the choice to live consciously.

* The practice of self-acceptance. If we are always trying to please other people or live up to other’s expectations, it’s difficult to build up your self-esteem when you are denying or disowning parts of yourself. You need to radically accept who are you are.

* The practice of self-responsibility. We need to take responsibility for creating our world. So much can feel out of your control and you may feel like you can’t do anything about it, but we need to take responsibility for what we can control.

* The practice of self-assertiveness. We may not feel that we’re worthy of setting boundaries or asserting our right to not be walked all over. Even if you don’t feel up to it, try hard to set boundaries and stand up for what you believe in.

* The practice of living purposefully. Do we wander through life fulfilling others wants and goals? We need to have our own sense of purpose instead of passively accepting other’s goals for ourselves. Ask yourself, “why am I here and what am I doing here?”

* The practice of personal integrity. More than being a person of integrity, this pillar specifically relates to our feeling of wholeness, being true to oneself, and not denying parts of ourselves. It’s really about having integrity within.

These pillars have to be generated internally. Only you have control over taking these actions! Start and end each day with a journal entry in your GutwiZdom Self-Esteem Booster Journal TM! GutwiZdom Every Heart Matters

“WiZdoms” for the Heart ♥

This week’s GutwiZdom episode was recorded in front of a live audience at the WCBS Studios in NYC.  Dr. Jonathan Winston, a highly regarded nephrologist from the Mount Sinai Health System (and Deidre’s doctor of 26 years!) joined Deidre and JG along with Dr. John Puskas, Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery (also from the Mount Sinai Health System), and the man responsible for saving Dr. Winston’s life.

Listen to Dr. Jonathan Winston share his incredible story and get heart healthy “wiZdoms” from both doctors to live a heart healthier 2018!

HEART HEALTHY WIZDOMS FOR 2018

* Don’t assume! Like Dr. Winston, you might be experiencing fatigue or shortness of breath and blaming it on “deconditioning” (being out of shape). Don’t self-diagnose! If you are overweight and you smoke, chances are you know you are at a higher risk for heart disease. However, don’t be fooled. Thin people who exercise and look good can also be at risk for heart disease.

* Prevention and Intention. Things like family history, poor diet, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and smoking are all risk factors for coronary heart disease. The good news is that you can stop smoking and reduce weight issues by exercising, which will improve your high blood pressure. There are medicines/statins available to treat hypertension and cholesterol, as well. So, knowing that you might have some higher risk factors for coronary artery disease can be prevented if you know your risk factors and address them! With intention to prevent whatever risk factors you may have you will be ahead of the game.

* Make better choices in your diet. Reduce your processed foods and red meat intake and increase heart healthy foods like fruits and vegetables. It’s okay to have red meat, by the way. Being aware of the fat content in what we eat, whether it’s red meat or cupcakes, is a key factor to heart health. Lean meats, low sodium, low fat diets that are rich in fresh vegetables and fruit are still the heart healthy “wiZdoms” we should live by.

* Manage your stress. Mediate, take a yoga class, or practice gratitude with the GutwiZdom Journal of Gratitude™. It’s super important to identify what your stress triggers are. Sometimes easier said than done, try and pinpoint specific triggers that cause you stress and then think about what gives you equilibrium and calms you in those types of situations. Then, you will have the ability to put some control around those triggers and jump to working on being calm, first, before reacting.

* Make daily exercise part of your routine. Adding more walking to your day can be as easy as getting off the subway a few stops early and walking to work. Finding opportunities during your day to get exercise in will help keep your stress levels down and your heart health up!

* Get a stress test! Now that you know your rick factors, signs of heart disease, and how to get heart healthy, get tested and track your progress! Thankfully, Dr. Winston had to have a stress test prior to his double knee surgery that had been scheduled. Had he not had the stress test, he could have died. Be sure to include in your annual physical a cardio stress test. It doesn’t hurt and, as you’ll hear with Dr. Winston, it saved his life.

New Year’s Resolutions!

Dr. Glenn Doyle joins GutwiZdom to chat about how to set, keep, and achieve your New Year’s Resolutions!

Have you ever made a New Year’s Resolution that you just couldn’t keep? You’re not alone! Between 42% and 92% of New Year’s Resolutions end in failure. So, what can we do to make sure we see success?

Dr. Glenn Doyle joined us this week to provide his “wiZdom” on goal setting for the new year.

Check out a few of Dr. Doyle’s “wiZdoms” below and listen to the episode for more!

DR DOYLE’S RESOLUTION WIZDOMS

* Why should we set resolutions? Resolutions are just a structured form of goal setting. Setting goals are important for us as human beings for building our self-esteem.

* What kind of resolutions should we stay away from? Stay away from goals that require you to “be something different” instead of changing a behavior.

* Is the new year the best time to set a goal? Effective goals need a timeline, but there is nothing special about the new year, except that it is a goal post that everyone recognizes.

* How do we keep our resolutions on track? The first step in goal setting is time management. Know when to start, give yourself a timeline, and be realistic about your stepping stones. Make sure you schedule check-ins with yourself to see how you did. When was it hard? What worked and what didn’t? How can we do better?

* What if we feel like our resolutions are failing? Having a good relationship with yourself is important if you want to achieve your goals. Shame never works in the long term.

Helping Others Help Themselves!

Marty Finkle joins Deidre & JG to chat about his mission of helping others help themselves!

Our special guest and dear friend, Marty Finkle, joined us to chat about his personal and professional mission that he started 35 years ago to help others help themselves. Marty is the CEO of AscendU Group, a public speaker, and a coach. His journey is definitely something we can all learn from and live by.

Marty was recently diagnosed with stage 4 metastasized lung cancer and given 3-18 months to live. Since his diagnosis, Marty has been living his mission even more than before. Check out Marty’s wiZdoms below and don’t forget to listen to our episode!

MARTY’S WIZDOMS TO LIVE BY

How have you found success?
Not everyone wants to learn, but you have to choose to empower, educate, and guide. Success for me is focusing on the things that make an impact in people’s lives and watching them be outstanding.

What is one thing listeners can do to help someone help themselves?
Be open and honest. With my diagnosis, I became public about it instead of wallowing in self-pity. Allow yourself to be vulnerable and people will care enough to share back.

Do you ever feel angry about your diagnosis?
First it was disbelief and shock and then there was anger. But I decided that I was not going to give up. I can get mad and sad sometimes because I don’t want to leave, but surrounding myself with friends and family keeps me going.

How do you know what to say to someone in a similar situation?
Be blatantly honest. Give people permission to ask you questions. And don’t wait until a diagnosis! Let’s not wait until were faced with something life threatening like this to start having these meaningful conversations. It’s okay to be honest about our feelings.

What advice can you give to others on being brave?
Live a life of bravery by being open about what you’re going through. Have the courage to be vulnerable every day.

Do you ever feel lonely?
The way you choose to not feel lonely is different for everyone. I was very public about it because it gives me energy to be with people. It helps me to not feel lonely to surround myself with family and friends. Promise yourself not to be lonely and let people in. It’s important to remember that no one fights alone.
