Gritty and Green: We Are Seeds - Klean Kensington
Gritty and Green presents a four part miniseries, We Are Seeds, featuring community gardens around Philadelphia with stories of the past and present as told by the gardeners that tend the beds. Klean Kensington is a nonprofit that pays youth for their work creating and maintaining community gardens by clearing out vacant lots. The idea came to Jeremy Chen when he was leading a group of volunteers in a neighborhood clean up after the George Floyd protests during the pandemic. The streets needed to be cleaned, the teens needed to be paid and the neighborhood needed some gardens. Since then, well paid teens in Kensington have cleaned up empty lots that became dumping sites, turning them into community gardens. They maintain at least 7 gardens within a few blocks of Kensington, growing flowers and food and most importantly showing neighbors that they can have beautiful green spaces. They’ve also helped resurrect old community gardens that fell into disarray, like the Philadelphia Harvest Hope Community Garden, that is now maintained by neighbors. Klean Kensington also uses their workforce to help other organizations, like Kensington Corridor Trust. By mentoring and paying teens for their work, teaching them skills to bring into their adult lives, and bettering the neighborhood, Klean Kensington shows that big issues need a local touch.

Gritty and Green: We Are Seeds Holly Street
Gritty and Green presents a four part miniseries, We Are Seeds, featuring community gardens around Philadelphia with stories of the past and present as told by the gardeners that tend the beds. Holly Street Neighbors Garden is located in the Powelton neighborhood of West Philadelphia nestled between row homes. Once empty lots, now a shade garden invites pedestrians into the peaceful greenspace with a view of the organic garden. It was established in 2005 by community organizer Winnie Harris who died by gun violence in 2017. Now, friend and gardener, Elizabeth Warring manages the garden and helps carry on Winnie’s legacy with about 13 other gardeners planting organic vegetables in the Powelton Neighborhood. Together they hold community events, inviting the neighbors into their peaceful green space. After two decades, the gardeners are hoping that this will be the year that their garden and sanctuary will receive protections from developers.

Gritty & Green: We Are Seeds Glenwood Green Acres
Gritty and Green presents a four part miniseries, We Are Seeds, featuring community gardens around Philadelphia with stories of the past and present as told by the gardeners that tend the beds. Glenwood Green Acres is one of the largest and oldest urban farms in Philadelphia, with over 75 gardeners growing food on the 4 acres in any given year. The garden was founded in the early 1980s on a lot left empty after the whiskey barrel factory burnt down. Tired of seeing their neighborhood used as a dumping ground, James Taylor and a handful of neighbors worked to clean it up and start the garden. In 1996 the garden was formally protected by the Neighborhoods Garden Trust. Now plots have passed down through generations of new gardeners like president Darlene Marcus, whose grandfather was one of the first gardeners at Glenwood. She’s joined by VP Louis Tillery and Treasurer Viery Ricketts-Thomas to share the garden’s history and gardeners new and old share its present. There’s even a surprise appearance from State Senator Sherif Street and the president of the Philadelphia Horticulture Society, Matt Rader.
