Gritty and Green presents a four part miniseries, We Are Seeds, featuring community gardens around Philadelphia with stories of the past and present as told by the gardeners that tend the beds.
Holly Street Neighbors Garden is located in the Powelton neighborhood of West Philadelphia nestled between row homes. Once empty lots, now a shade garden invites pedestrians into the peaceful greenspace with a view of the organic garden. It was established in 2005 by community organizer Winnie Harris who died by gun violence in 2017. Now, friend and gardener, Elizabeth Warring manages the garden and helps carry on Winnie’s legacy with about 13 other gardeners planting organic vegetables in the Powelton Neighborhood. Together they hold community events, inviting the neighbors into their peaceful green space. After two decades, the gardeners are hoping that this will be the year that their garden and sanctuary will receive protections from developers.
