Unpacking a season of discontent and the MLB Draft for the Atlanta Braves
The Atlanta Braves unfortunately picked up right where they left off, opening the second half with a disappointing series loss to the New York Yankees. Grant McAuley sizes up where the Braves find themselves after stumbling to start the second half, the unusual place the club finds itself in as the trade deadline approaches, some signs of life for a pair of struggling players, the impressive right arm of Ronald Acuña Jr., strong hitting from the Atlanta catching duo leading to a lineup change and much more. Special guest Gaurav Vedak of Baseball Prospectus joins the show to recap the MLB Draft for the Braves, who strayed from their usual strategy of loading up on pitchers and instead focused on some impressive position player selections. It's already last stand time for the 2025 Atlanta Braves
The Atlanta Braves find themselves in yet another tailspin after being swept at home by the Baltimore Orioles, but this bender might just spell the end of their hopes of turning their season around with ample time to dig out of the hole they find themselves in. Grant McAuley discusses yet another challenging week as the series losses are once again piling up for the Braves. Not only are the losses mounting on the field, but Spencer Schwellenbach followed Chris Sale to the 60-day injured list, leaving Atlanta devoid of enough capable starters to field a rotation -- something that had been a strength for the club. Add that to the continued offensive struggles and the Braves are once again sinking in the standings and unable to put together enough offense to win consistently. Nick Green of FanDuel Sports joins the show to discuss the woes of the Atlanta lineup, how it went from one of the best in baseball to one of the worst in under two years, whether or not a new hitting coach with a new message and new philosophy was the right call, and what, if anything the club can do to once again reach its potential. (28:19). We'll also take a trip around the big leagues for some history making moments from the week that was for Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh and Dodgers great Clayton Kershaw, run down the National and American League rosters for the All-Star Game, and have a visit with Melanie Newman of the Baltimore broadcast team (57:38). Half way home, Atlanta Braves still struggling to build momentum
The Atlanta Braves passed the mathematical halfway point over the weekend, but it was in the midst of yet another winnable series slipping through their collective fingers. Grant McAuley discusses the biggest stories and headlines from the week that was for the Braves, a week that saw them lose the momentum they'd worked so hard to build with head-to-head success against the formerly first place New York Mets by losing series to the Miami Marlins and Philadelphia Phillies. The offensive woes continue to plague the club, while both the starting rotation and bullpen are under more stress than ever to keep the Braves in games. Now seven games under .500 and staring at major deficits in both the division and Wild Card races, the Braves will attempt to make the most of their final two weeks before the All-Star break as they face the Los Angeles Angles, Baltimore Orioles, Athletics, and St. Louis Cardinals over the next 12 games. That stretch could ultimately determine what Atlanta's strategy will be for the trade deadline, because failing to win consistently may mean there's no point in bringing in reinforcements this season. Brad Rowland of Hammer Territory joins the show to discuss the Braves at the halfway marker, the loss of Chris Sale, the lost seasons thus far for Michael Harris and Ozzie Albies, and what needs to happen in July to allow Atlanta to pull the nose up on its season. Hear that discussion beginning at 29:20. In the trip around the big leagues, we cover the loss of Dave Parker, the field for the Home Run Derby, Ketel Marte's unfortunate trip to Chicago, and hear the voice of the Pitchcom device courtesy of SNY. And Sam Blum of The Athletic joins to preview the Angels and Braves series that begins on Tuesday. Hear that at 57:58. The Atlanta Braves took a significant step toward turning their season around by sweeping the New York Mets only to stumble in a series loss to the Miami Marlins over the weekend and receive crushing injury news on ace Chris Sale. With another showdown with the Mets beginning Monday and a series with the Philadelphia Phillies to follow, can the Braves rise to the occasion? Grant McAuley discusses the week that was and the pivotal week ahead, Sale’s injury prognosis, and where the rotation goes from here. Meanwhile, Ronald Acuña Jr.’s transcendent play has not been enough to spark an Atlanta lineup with too many holes. Can Jurickson Profar’s return help turn things around? Relievers Pierce Johnson and Dylan Dodd share some insights in this week’s conversations from the clubhouse.
