The Atlanta Braves have a new manager and it ended up being a familiar face. The club announced the hiring off long-time bench coach Walt Weiss this week, setting off a slew of changes to the coaching staff. Grant McAuley discusses the hiring of Weiss, how he fits into what the Braves are looking for, the club's decision to keep it internal despite a month-long search, how the continuity Weiss provides should help Atlanta get back to winning, and some of the changes that have already taken place on the coaching staff. Pitching coach Rick Kranitz, first base coach Tom Goodwin, and third base coach Fredi Gonzalez are out, while former Mets pitching coach Jeremy Hefner and first base coach Antoan Richardson were hired. We'll also hit some questions from Braves fans about the winter shopping list, including the need at shortstop after Ha-Seong Kim declined his his 2026 player option, the search for more starting and relief pitching, health updates on some key Braves rotation pieces, the decision to pick up the club options on Chris Sale and Ozzie Albies, as well as what an extension would look like for Ronald Acuña Jr. From The Diamond airs live on 92-9 The Game in Atlanta on the weekend throughout baseball season. It seems the spiraling Atlanta Braves can't win for losing
The Atlanta Braves' challenging season took another turn for the worst as their offense continues to struggle to find consistency and the one-run losses are piling up at an alarming pace. Grant McAuley discusses a strange and unfortunate week for the Braves that saw them suffer one of their worst losses in franchise history amidst a string of close games that aren't going their way. We'll cover an unexpected coaching change as former manager Fredi Gonzalez takes over as third base coach, a bitterly short reunion with former All-Star Craig Kimbrel, and a host of other issues Atlanta is currently facing. You'll hear from Braves third baseman Austin Riley on how the club is navigating its challenges overall and at the plate as well as a visit with outfielder Eli White. And we'll examine the damage this most recent slide has done to the Braves' playoff odds and hear some insights from GM Alex Anthopoulos on the state of the team and the injury DH Marcell Ozuna is playing through. Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com joins the show to discuss the much-anticipated ABS challenge system that MLB will introduce in 2026, Lou Gehrig Day and MLB's new softball venture as our trip around the big leagues. From The Diamond airs live on 92-9 The Game in Atlanta on Sundays throughout baseball season. You can also subscribe wherever you get your podcasts.
