Why is fashion so bad for the environment?

According to the United Nations Environment Program, fashion accounts for up to 10% of global carbon dioxide output, which is more than international flights and shipping combined. Up to 100 billion garments are produced by the fashion industry every year. And each year, as much as 92 million tonnes of clothing ends up in landfill. Only 20% of textiles are collected for reuse and recycling globally, and almost 60% of all clothing material is actually made of plastic. So fashion is also responsible for 1/5 of the 300 million tonnes of plastic produced each year.

There’s a lot more shocking stats like this, and we wanted to understand why.

In this episode we chat to 3 incredible industry experts who are innovating in this space to drive change.

Our Experts

  • Julie Willoughby, Executive at Circ (https://circ.earth/)
  • David McLean, Founder at Hubbed (https://hubbed.com/)
  • Belinda Paul, Founder at RCYCL (https://rcycl.com.au/)

You’ll learn

  1. How materials are constructed and how they’ve evolved
  2. How to dispose of clothes you no longer wear
  3. Why last mile delivery needs a shake up

Why Is It So Hard To Find Relevant Fashion References?
81% of women don’t feel represented in fashion advertising. Which is actually not that surprising given that fashion is 'inaccessibly aspirational' by design. The average catwalk model is a minimum of 5 foot 9 inches tall, and less than a US Size 2. Which means LESS THAN 0.3% of women look like a catwalk model!! New research shows that 91% of women want to see clothes worn by a diversity of models who look like them. And it's no wonder given that 78% of women feel more relevant, better about their bodies, and/or inspired to try new styles when they see women who look similar to them in the fashion industry. In this episode, we wanted to understand why - with so much upside - fashion is still lagging when it comes to diversity and inclusion, and why it’s still so hard to find relevant fashion references. You’ll Learn: * Research linking what we SEE to how we FEEL * Why relevant inspiration is good for our confidence & for business * Where we feel most underrepresented in media * The challenges for those creating new retail categories * Which brands are genuinely trying to embrace diversity in their content * Why women over 55+ need more inspirational outfit ideas * Why Modest Fashion, as a global trend, is still relatively hard to find online * What fashion media could do to make lasting, real changes in representation GUESTS * Faye Brown - Motto Fashions www.motto.com.au * Emily Pask - Modest Mermaid www.modestmermaid.co * Natalie Wakeling- Embody Women www.embodywomen.com

"Why Can't I Find Clothes That Fit My Body?"
89% of women are more body confident when they like what they wear, but only 15% are wearing clothes that make them feel good everyday.  When there’s such a big reward for wearing clothes we like, why aren’t we doing it everyday?  Well, when we looked into it, one of the reasons is that it’s actually not always that easy to find clothes that fit! In fact, our research revealed that 82% of women have recently struggled to find clothes that fit - and we’re not just talking about size. Shape is the most reported factor, and height and age also play a big role. To launch our new show, we're talking to 2 industry experts who have been navigating the complexities around fit, and can share why there isn’t a quick, simple solution, but how they’ve taken steps to help us all feel good in what we wear. You’ll Learn: - The technical difficulties involved in making different sized garments - What is a 'Fat Tax' and who is paying for it? - How Insyze & Ample Folk are disrupting the fashion space for plus sizes - Why retailers sometimes choose not to stock extended size ranges in store - Why some extended size ranges don't suit all body shapes - Why minimum order limits can prevent brands from catering to all sizes - The importance of considered design when it comes to fit, not just the size - The role of styling when it comes to our perceptions of 'fit' - What customers like us really want to see in store and online - The future predictions in manufacturing to solve the 'fit' issue GUESTS: - Holly Richards - Ample Folk https://www.amplefolk.com/pages/about-us - Sylvie Wilson - Insyze https://insyze.com/  - Sarah Cohen (Co-host) - The Styling Advisory http://www.stylingadvisory.com.au
