ElecSoul – Light of Day This curated playlist was born from a quiet moment and a view through our window overlooking Selsley, Rodborough & Stroud. The light was just right. I took a picture, converted it to black and white, and felt something shift. Music can do that too. It reminds us we can create something meaningful and beautiful for ourselves, no matter what others think. That’s what ElecSoul is about. A space to feel, imagine, and create.

SPIRIT
I’ve just recorded a full one hour vinyl mix featuring some of my favourite soulful and deep house tracks from 1993 through to 2024. It was a real pleasure playing at Dialog Studios out in the beautiful Cotswold countryside such an incredible space. The team there are top-notch and can create virtually any look or vibe you’re after, whether you’re a band, solo artist, or a seasoned DJ like me. Totally love the authentic nature of it all. So glad I played records instead of CDJs, it would have been too polished sounding and seamless, and not at all organic. So there you have it. If you’ve got a love for meaningful 90s soulful songs and deep electronic grooves between 120–127 BPM, this one’s for you. Enjoy! www.djrobbieduncan.com | IG: djrobbieduncan

WARRIOR
ELECSOUL WARRIOR This week’s ElecSoul carries the spirit of quiet strength. I caught this image of a spider building a huge web. Silent, patient, and focused. Every move deliberate. It knows the struggle’s real, but it still creates, knowing that what’s meant to come, will. That energy runs through the mix — deep, soulful, and resilient. Each track spun with intent, another thread in the web. Joyce Wrice & Kaytranada – Iced Tea
Roy Ayers – Green And Gold (Delfonic Rework)
Art Of Tones & Chatobaron – Pendant Ce Temps-là à Vera Cruz
Coflo & Cee. – Love’s Masquerade (Vick Lavender’s Time Traveler Remix)

 Haldo & S.A.N.E – Please Come Through
Kings Of Tomorrow – Treat You Right (Sandy Rivera’s Classic Mix)
 Ron Carroll – Mysteries

PAPER
ELECSOUL - PAPER This week I found myself drawn to two producers for very different reasons. Ron Carroll and Felipe Gordon. I’ve always felt deeply connected to their music, but as I listened back through their work, it hit me: they’ve actually collaborated a number of times before! Felipe Gordon and Ron Carroll, both masters of soulful, groove-driven electronic music, have shared musical chemistry across releases like Gordon’s Hold On (Original Mix) featuring Carroll, and Carroll’s I’m Alive (Touch the Sky), which Felipe reworked in his own distinctive style. Gordon, a Colombian producer and DJ, brings a jazz-infused sensibility to house music, while Carroll a Chicago legend channels gospel roots, deep soul, and raw dancefloor energy. I haven’t included their collaborations directly in this week’s mix. Instead, I’ve reflected on the influences and similarities that connect them. The emotion, the musicianship, and that unmistakable feeling of spirit in motion. All my shows are recorded live to tape, with no editing. It’s never perfect, but that’s exactly how I like it. I’m grateful to have this platform to share my virtual residency on ElecSoul each week. Thanks for taking the time to listen. ElecSoul – Egress This one’s all about egress - stepping into new space and fresh sounds. Featuring artists I’m feeling right now, from deep house pioneers to modern jazz futurists and everything in between. Lock in and let it flow. On Youtube I've posted a short video montage to share my feelings and thoughts in this unusual time. Grateful for who I am, where I come from, and the family and friends I’m fortunate to have around me.

90s GARAGE ON THE RECORD
ElecSoul #248 90s GARAGE ON THE RECORD This episode I’m back on my vintage Vestax decks, playing straight from the collection. Just pure 12inch records, no fuss. It’s a 90s Garage session, full of raw drums, soulful vocals and bumping grooves that still feel fresh (apart from being worn and needing clean). Dug out a few gems featured on my Instagram series I haven’t played fully in a while, including Keith Thompson, Jomanda and 95 North. There’s a splash of Acid Trax in the mix too, plus a couple of deep Marshall Jefferson and Joey T Vanelli cuts to round it out. Hope you enjoy the sound of the session.

IS IT YOU?
Kicking off this week’s ElecSoul with a classic from Galliano, one of the standout acts from the Acid Jazz era on Gilles Peterson’s Talkin’ Loud label. I’d been chatting on IG about the scene back in the day, and it reminded me how Galliano carved out a sound that went way beyond the standard Acid Jazz blueprint. From there, I’m keeping close to that early crossover energy into the world of trip hop, breaks and dusty beats, with flavours that nod to Rae & Christian and Unkle. James Lavelle’s MoWax label was huge at the time, collaborating with artists like Portishead and pushing boundaries across sound and style. You get the idea. This week’s selection leans into a bit of nostalgia, but not without moving forward. There’s even a cut from Felix Da Housecat tucked in before we shift gears into house, garage and some late-night footwork. Hope you enjoy the ride, 49 minutes of memory, motion and movement.

HELLO, OLÁ, OLÁ, HOLA!, TODO BIEN & BACK AGAIN!
ElecSoul #246 – hello, olá, olá, Hola!, Todo bien & back again.
Felt like the right time to throw a bit of a Latin curveball into the mix this week… there’s summer in the air and I’ve been in that kind of mood. My wife and I often talk about going back to Lisbon it’s a place we both love but lately I’ve also been wondering what South America would be like. That daydream definitely crept into the music this time. Also had a really nice chat with Helder Russo on Instagram about his latest release a remix album of Church Music. I shared how much I loved ME AND YOU when it first came out, but my copy had corrupted and wouldn’t play on the CDJs. He kindly sorted me out with a fresh version big up Helder!
Listen again on Soundcloud, Apple Podcasts to hear the the track in question

Have a great weekend!

IN CONVERSATION WITH RONNIE Mc GRATH
ElecSoul 243 A Conversation with Ronnie McGrath Final episode before NGOMA launches — Thurs 18 July In this deeply personal closing chapter of the Ngoma preview series, I sit down with Ronnie McGrath. Poet, percussionist, educator, and long-time force in the UK’s Black creative arts landscape. Ronnie takes us on a vivid journey through his early years as a young, impressionable Black man in London, immersed in the capital’s thriving underground music scene encountering emerging icons like Gilles Peterson, Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson, and witnessing the rare groove movement firsthand at seminal clubs like Crackers, The Wag, and more. We also dive into: His days studying at Pyramid Arts Development alongside fellow future legends Being mentored by Clifford Jarvis (Sun Ra Arkestra) Playing with members of Cuban jazz legends Irakere Touring Europe with the Afro-Brazilian collective Afro Block And his near-miss of joining none other than the Brand New Heavies Ronnie’s lived it, felt it, moved with it. This episode is full of deep insights and spiritual groove. MUSIC IN THIS EPISODE: Dingwalls – Audio Bullys Rock Creek Park – The Blackbyrds Eh U What You Say – Roy Ayers Southern Freeze – Freeze Juana 1600 - Irakere Cathedrals - D.C. LaRue ––– Don’t miss Ronnie McGrath LIVE ++ improvising with Dr. Keys & DJ Robbie Duncan at the launch of NGOMA → Thurs 18 July · Stroud Brewery · £6 adv https://www.skiddle.com/e/40878734 Further reading & viewing: British Hustle documentary:
https://youtu.be/bOhLMyjXbko?si=Bwey27KjRN2m6hY3 Chris Hill hooked up with Stan Barratt circa 72/73 at the Goldmine on Canvey Island, Essex and effectively launched the identifiable Southern Soul scene - from which eventually came the Caister Weekender and everything else that followed. The Goldmine undeniably was where it all started. Those with longish memories will recall the brief swing revival of the mid 1970s, when Hilly briefly ceded the venue's dancefloor to the orchestras of Count Basie, Jimmie Lunceford, Chick Webb and Benny Goodman. Goldminers adopted swing fever for a few months until it attracted the attentions of Britain's national press (The Sun) then immediately dumped the fad and returned to a solid offering of Soul, Funk, and Jazz. Hilly departed for pastures new for a stint at the Lacey lady in Ilford before returning "home" once more a few years later. (In the mid-80's I promoted a "Goldmine Revival" with Hilly headlining which ran for about six weeks, after which Gary Dennis did likewise with a return to the "Lacey Lady" - follow all that)? "British Hustle", directed by Curtis Clark, admirably illustrates what the underground soul scene was truly like back in the late 70’s. A film of two distinct parts, the first twenty minutes of BH was filmed at Clouds in Brixton with Greg Edwards (Froggy was also spinning that night but isn't featured in the film for some inexplicable reason). Our buck-eyed buddy and refugee from across the sea is pure US slickness, playing to a predominantly Black floor whilst Hilly, at the Goldmine, for the film's second half rabble-rouses a mainly white crowd and is the ultimate showman. Had he directed the thronged floor to eat each other they'd have done so without question! Check out the (admittedly primarily alcohol-primed, with maybe a few ludes thrown in) euphoria of the Goldmine floor and it's not hard to see how this was replicated a decade later when the rave scene roared in, underscored by the arrival of E in comparison. Whatever, this is as accurate reflection of the southern Soul scene of the late 70's as there could possibly be, the roots, a magical time. Those that were there can take a trip down Memory Lane, all others can get just a little taste of what they missed....
