Ep. 58 - 4th of July 2022 - Eagle Hoss & Hound

Happy Birthday America!  This episode presents a speech by JD Collier for the Flag Day ceremony at Emmaus, PA which occurred on June 14, 2022.  The speech mentions such Eagles as George Washington and such Hosses as Benjamin Franklin, Ulysses Grant, Abraham Lincoln, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Also, JD Collier defines the terms EAGLE, MUTT, and CORGO.    EAGLE – an individual shaped by a service adversity (such as Armed Forces, Law Enforcement, Fire & Rescue, and their spouses) MUTT – the common immigrant citizen of these Americas, from all over the world and part of the glorious cultural diversity which becomes our melting pot. HOSS – a social integrity hero from our American past. CORGO – Corpo-Government Oligarchy – Big Government in cahoots with Big Food, Big Medicine, Big Tech, Big Media, and Big Sports and Entertainment obviously conspiring against America and The MUTT.

Also in this episode, JD Collier shares some local 4th of July festivities including a fire truck parade through the neighborhood and fireworks at night. This episode is chock full of Americana!  Enjoy!  The Eagle Hoss & Hound podcast is a platform for respect. Respect for the Eagle - the individual with a service background (including spouses). Muhammad Ali Part 2 Ft Clovis Williams SERVICE S3 E25

Besides being "The Greatest" and the Heavyweight Champ of the World, Muhammad Ali was a devout Muslim.  His religious beliefs guided his life.  In fact, he followed his religious bent when he declined enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1967 (at the height of the Vietnam War).  His refusal to join the U.S. Military after being drafted was highly irregular at the time, and he faced prison (not to mention having his World Heavyweight Boxing title rescinded - and all of the earning potential that went along with it).  Still, Muhammad Ali stuck with his beliefs, and took the conviction for draft-evasion. He was no draft-dodger, like many American males who fled to Canada and/or burned their draft cards.  No, not Muhammad Ali. He believed that his status as a conscientious objector should be accepted, and he appealed his conviction all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.  In 1971, after four years not being able to play his sport, he resumed the fight towards earning the heavyweight title when the Supreme Court overturned his conviction. Of course "The Greatest" lived up to his dub as he beat George Foreman in 1974 to once again win the Heavyweight boxing title. In February 1978, Ali lost to Leon Spinks, but later that year, regained the Heavyweight Boxing Title for the 3rd and final time beating Spinks on September 15th in New Orleans. In addition to being a gold medal winner for boxing (representing the USA in the 1960 Olympics in Rome) and being the WBA Heavyweight Champ, Ali was honored in 1999 as he was named "Sportsman of the Century" by Sports Ilustrated magazine. Besides being a great boxer, Muhammad Ali influenced public politicies towards civil rights for all Americans with his many speaking engagements and his outlandish celebrity personality. He surely advanced social integrity making him a HOSS indeed!  The Eagle Hoss & Hound podcast is a platform for respect. Squanto & The 1st Thanksgiving - COMMITMENT - S3 E23

As William Bradford offered a prayer at the first Thanksgiving celebration, he specifically named Squanto who he described as a “Joseph” sent to aid the Pilgrims. Like Joseph from the Bible, Squanto had been taken away from his family and sold into slavery. Then, later he returned and helped to redeem his people. Squanto was a Native American of the Pawtuxet tribe in Massachusetts. An English ship visiting the coast near his home off of Cape Cod in the early 1600’s had lured him and his companion braves, capturing them and taking them away to be sold as slaves in Spain. Squanto was purchased by monks in Spain who over 5 years’ time taught him Christianity. Then Squanto went to live with an English merchant in London for another 5 years gaining a knowledge of the English language and customs. Finally, Squanto was able to join a voyage back to his native America as an interpreter. He found his home tribe of Pawtuxet wiped out (by a smallpox plaque), and he wandered to join a nearby tribe. When the Pilgrims arrived and were struggling to survive, Squanto taught them many skills of growing corn and other vegetables, as well as how to fish and gather much food from the surrounding vegetation. Plus, his interpretation skills helped immensely to improve relations with the Native Americans. Because he helped advance social integrity for the Pilgrims which made a huge impact to start the American colonies, he is considered a HOSS indeed! James Baldwin Part 2 - COURAGE - S3 E22

James Baldwin was an American author who challenged the status quo for race relations in the 20th Century.  His poetry, books, and commentary gave voice especially to the millions of African Americans who were stuck in the segregated US South with it's Jim Crow attitudes and practices - not to mention the de facto segregation that affected the whole United States.  It took a great deal of COURAGE for Jimmy Baldwin to speak out against the brutal racism of the 1960s as he did given that several of his close colleagues in the civil rights movement were killed including Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. One needs only review the interview James Baldwin gave on the Dick Cavett show in 1969 to see his impact.  Basically, Jimmy Baldwin sums it up saying, "I don't want to be given anything by you, I just want to be left alone so I can do it myself"  He is considered a HOSS indeed! Lincoln in Gettysburg - STRENGTH - S3 E20

Abraham Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863 to a gathered crowd of an estimated 10-15 thousand people to dedicate the national burial site for the soldiers who died during the great battle at Gettysburg, PA (which had occured in July 1863).  His simple language and short speech length was in stark contrast to the speech delivered by Edward Everett who spoke eloquently for 2 hours straight immediately beforehand.  Lincoln had been invited to give a few remarks, but the main attraction was this professional orator, Mr. Everett.  Lincoln had to pause a handful of times during the 2-minute speech due to applause.  The next day, after Lincoln's speech had been printed in newspapers around the country, Lincoln received much respect for his leadership and he gained further support for the war effort.  Lincoln, the Great Emancipator, had successfully moved the people of the nation to keep advancing the devastating war effort and expect more sacrifice to achieve the goal of victory for liberty.  Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States, provided steadfast leadership during the most challenging period of American history, the Civil War, managing to put an end to slavery!  Lincoln's great focus on advancing social integrity through executive leadership and his ultimate sacrifice/full measure of devotion means he is considered a HOSS indeed! Jim Thorpe - SACRIFICE - S3 E19

Jim Thorpe was called "That Indian" by the opposing football teams and the American culture at large as the running back for the Carlisle Indians - the school for Native American industrial training in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.  Despite the racist rhetoric and the best tacklers available at the time, 1911-1912, Jim still gained over 3000 rushing yards in one season (the first such occurence in collegiate football history).  He represented the United States in the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden in the two grueling events, the Pentathlon and the Decathlon; winning both gold medals decisively.  These wins earned him world fame and the title of the "World's Greatest Athlete" The next year, 1913, the Olympics committee decided to revoke his gold medals.  Their claim at the time was that Jim Thorpe was disqualified from the required amateur status because he had been paid for playing some baseball a few summers prior.  Irregardless, Jim Thorpe still carried on with his baseball and football careers becoming the first president of the National Football League in 1920 (while still playing).  Jim Thorpe, was born to two Native American parents in Oklahoma in 1887.  His father Hiram Thorpe was half Sac and Fox and half Irish.  His mother was one-fourth French and the rest Native American.  Jim Thorpe was ALL-AMERICAN, and he showed that on the field of football as well as other sports.  Jim showed the American culture and the world that abilities and skills are more important than attributes that don't matter like skin color or ethnicity.  Still, it was a hard lesson for the American culture to learn.  Jim performed physical feats like none other before or since, and in 2000 he was named the "Greatest Athlete of the 20th Century."  After he died in California in 1953, his widow, Patsy Thorpe, arranged to have a town in Pennsylvania named in his honor, Jim Thorpe, PA.  His remains are honorably rested there, and the town remains a prominent tourist town in the Pocono Mountains today.  In 1982 his gold medals were restored and given to his family.  Through Jim's love of life and sport to advance friendly competition amongst all cultures he is considered a HOSS indeed! Sacagawea - SERVICE - S3 E18

Sacagawea provided a vital service (especially her calm service leadership) for Lewis & Clark, during their Corps of Discovery expedition to explore the Louisiana Purchase land from St. Louis all the way to the Pacific Ocean.  Needing to trade for horses with the Shoshone Tribe, Lewis & Clark were glad that they contracted with Sacagawea's husband Charbonneau to perform as guide and interpreter. Without any complaint, Sacagawea quietly gathered food for the 30+ member team of soldiers who came along with Lewis and Clark - the whole time caring for her infant son, Bapiste who was strapped to her back swaddled on a cradleboard.  During dangerous events like times the canoes and piroques were capsized on the Missouri river, Sacagawea remained unshaken. Her calm demeanor helped restore a mishap into something which could be handled. If this teenage woman could stay calm during disasters, all along caring for her infant without complaint, how much more so could the rest of the Corps of Discovery?  When the expedition reached her native tribe, the Shoshone, she was pleasantly surprised to find out that her very own brother was its new chief.  Not surprisingly, she helped negotiate to get horses for the treacherous phase of travel over the Rocky Mountains. On many occasions during the encounters with various tribes along the journey, Sacagawea was able to convince the would-be enemies to allow the team of explorers to pass unharmed and often with full bellies provided by tribes like the Nez Perce.  Overall, Lewis & Clark plus their whole team, completed their highly successful mission to explore the Northwest Territory of the Louisiana Purchase in 1804-1806, staying safe and alive in large part due to Sacagawea.  Sacagawea conducted herself admirably and enabled America to open up the West for settlement, and she is considered a HOSS indeed! Colin Powell - RESPECT - S3 E17

Colin Powell was the 65th U.S. Secretary of State serving under President George W. Bush. Prior to that, he had served a distinguished U.S. Army career of nearly 4 decades culminating as the U.S. Military's highest rank and position, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (during Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton).  General Colin Powell had commented that he much enjoyed working in 1987-1989 as President Ronald Reagan's National Secrity Advisor (even while still a 3-Star General).  Having been born to Jamaican immigrants in New York City in 1937, Colin Powell grew up poor but well loved and nurtured amongst his family and neighbors. He proved his work ethic as a teenager working for a shop owner on his block. Attending public schools throughout his years growing up, he graduated from City College of New York in 1958 with a degree in geology.  Gaining his commission from ROTC at CCNY, he became a soldier of the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant. While in the U.S. Army, he experienced the racism of the segregated south while stationed in places like Georgia and North Carolina. Plus, he met and married an Alabama beauty, Alma Johnson, just before shipping off to Vietnam in 1962. Powell was able to witness first-hand the difference between being denied service at a hamburger restaurant in 1962 and later enjoying a hamburger there after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 took effect. He provided calm, determined leadership throughout his Army career and continued serving given his imbued attributes as an Eagle in several roles beyond. Notably, he and Alma started the organization, America's Promise, to enhance the learnings of youth in strengthening his beloved county, the United States of America.  Having just passed away in October 2021, and due to his steadfast devotion to advancing social integrity in all areas of his life and career, Colin Powell is considered a HOSS indeed! Pocahontas - COMMITMENT - S3 E16

Pocahontas was a pivotal figure in American history!  When the first English settlement of Jamestown was established in 1607, she became enthralled at these newcomers and befriended John Smith (learning some English and teaching him some Powhatan language). Pocahontas, the favoraite daughter of Powhatan, Chief and ruler of the Native Americans in Virginia, later saved John Smith from death by giving him a hug before Powhatan's warriors could strike him down.  Defying her father by continuing to engage with and help the colonists who were facing starvation, Pocahontas showed them how to plant crops like corn, squash, beans, and tobacco. Powhatan's war against the English encouraged them to capture and hold Pocahontas for ransom/relief in the form of food and supplies, but Powhatan did not press for her release.  Instead, Pocahontas became more familiar with the English, further befriending them.  Later, a colonist, John Rolfe, asked Powhatan for her hand in marrriage.  Surprisingly, Powhatan agreed and pledged peace since his daughter was then related to the English.  This peace extended even further when Pocahontas visited England with her new husband and toddler boy, Thomas Rolfe, her only child.  The English graciously welcomed Pocahontas and her fame in England helped spur investment and interest in further colonizing efforts in Virginia and elsewhere in North America. Tragically, Pocahontas died while in England of pneumonia or tuberculosis, but her fame and influence only increased afterward.  Due to her empathy and courage in supporting the early colonists of America promoting social integrity no matter the skin color or origin, Pocahontas is considered a HOSS indeed! Margaret Chase Smith - COURAGE - S3 E15

On winning the election for Senator of Maine in 1948, Margaret Chase Smith became the first woman to have won elections for both houses of U.S. Congress.  Hailing from Skohegan, Maine, Margaret Chase became involved with politics in 1930 when she married Clyde Smith. By 1936, Clyde won election as a U.S. Representative from her home in Maine. After 10 years of marriage and living with her husband in Washington, D.C., Clyde died of heart disease, and she ran for election in 1940 to fill his vacant Congressionnal seat.  She would go on to win a total of 4 elections to the House of Representatives before running for Senate in 1948.  By 1950, the junior Senator from Maine made headlines by leading the Republican Party minority dissent against the inflammatory McCarthyism which had swept the U.S. Capitol and the nation.  Margaret delivered her famous speech before Congress, called the "Delcaration of Conscience"  Her courage to stand up to the bigoted and intolerant forces of supposed anti-Communism in the name of true Americanism was noteworthy for anyone, especially a female Senator. She even ran for President in 1964!  Throughout her distinguished career in Congress spanning 32 years, she stood up for women, labor, and minorities, especially as it related to social integrity within the military services making her a HOSS indeed! Part 2 - How important is the VOTE? - When JFK spoke to the nation on June 11, 1963, many Americans were inspired by his words. SNCC - SACRIFICE - S3 E12

When Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was jailed in Atlanta 9 days before the 1960 election, his release changed the course of the election, benefiting John F. Kennedy who won.  JFK and his brother had made two important phone calls, convincing the judge to release him.  The joy felt by Afro-American voters swayed the election in favor of the Democrats.  Julian Bond's civil rights lectures recounted several scenes from the Civil Rights movement in the book Time To Teach (assembled 5 years after Julian's 2015 death). Besides the efforts of the NAACP, and the activism of MLK, Julian's notes tell of the formation and work of the SNCC - Student Nonviolent Coordination Committee (of which Julian was a part).  From sit-ins to Freedom Rides, the SNCC was a potent force for advancing civil rights for all, including Afro-Americans.  The Eagle Hoss & Hound podcast is a platform for respect. MLK in Birmingham Jail - SERVICE - S3 E11

Although Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is most noted for his "I Have A Dream!" ,speech, he did many other things including write a letter while being held inside a Birmingham Jail.  This letter was in response to criticism by a moderate group of clergy who were disappointed in the tactics MLK was employing to hasten the end of segregation. Dr. King's non-violent marches, sit-ins, and writings were ratcheting up tensions so that legal actions could occur more quickly, but the critics weren't at all critical of the conditions which gave rise to the tensions in the first place. Dr. King highlighted his feelings very well within the letter response. One major theme of the letter is the discussion about SAMENESS rather than DIFFERENCES in how he described people.  J.D. Collier agrees with MLK that WE ARE THE SAME. The Eagle Hoss & Hound podcast is a platform for respect. Respect for the Eagle - the individual with a service background (including spouses). Quanah Parker - RESPECT - S3 E10

Quanah Parker was considered the Last Comanche Chief. His mother was Cynthia Ann Parker, who at the age of 9 was captured during a Comanche raid of her Parker family settlement on the frontier of the Lone Star Republic of Texas. Raised as a Comanche, when grown she married Chief Peta Nokona and bore 3 children, the first being a son, Quanah (Frangrance).  Quanah, born in 1850, grew to be an able warrior and well-respected amongst his people despite his mixed blood. Through the leadership of his father and his own, a great many Comanches refused to sign the Treaty of Medicine Lodge in 1867 which brought most of the Comanche to a reservation in southwestern Oklahoma. No! Quanah and the Comanches expected to be free to hunt the buffalo on the land which was theirs from 100 centuries back in time.  Only, the U.S. Army, the Texas Rangers, buffalo hunters, and settlers kept invading and interfering. The Comanches raided and attacked, killing thousands of settlers and soldiers before Quanah ultimately surrendered in 1875 (after the buffalo herds were gone and his people were starving). Like Sitting Bull, Geronimo, and others, Quanah would later become a celebrity and embraced his new life as a United States citizen.  In fact, he became a very successful rancher. He managed to visit Washington DC and meet with President Theodore Roosevelt. He also played a cameo role in an early motion picture. As a warrior, he was an Eagle, as a leader fighting for fair treatment of his people, he was a Hoss. Geronimo - COMMITMENT - S3 E9

Geronimo was an Apache Warrior from the southern area of Arizona and New Mexico who in the 1870s and 1880s fought for freedom for his people as the US Army resisted and eventually prevailed.  Like the other renegade tribes beforehand, the Apache were not going to sit back and allow the American settlers to invade and take away their native homelands without a fight. Told they would be released to join their families at the reservation in Florida, Geronimo and the remaining warriors eventually surrendered to General Nelson Miles.  However, as was usually the case, the US Government broke its promise and instead imprisoned Geronimo and his fellow warriors as prisoners of war (by order of President Grover Cleveland). In 1905, Geronimo participated in the inaugural parade in Washington, DC for President Theodore Roosevelt. After the parade, he asked Roosevelt to allow his tribe to return to AZ/NM their homeland. Too bad though, he was denied.  In 1909, Geronimo died of pnuemonia on the reservation in Oklahoma. Chief Joseph - COURAGE - S3 E8

Chief Joseph, the leader of the Nez Perce Tribe of Native Americans from the Columbia River Plateau in the US Northwest, who in 1877 directed the efforts of his tribe to battle and eventually surrender to the US Army (in Montana only 40 miles from the Canadian border where they meant to escape). Chief Joseph had expected to join Sitting Bull who was in exile in Canada for awhile to recover from the brutal clashes that left many of his people dead and those still with him broken and desperate (after their 1400-mile journey fleeing the US Army's advance).  On surrendering, he said, "Hear me, my chiefs! I am tired. My heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever."   Chief Joseph was a great speaker from the heart, and his wisdom shown through with many timeless quotes.  His spirited pleas perhaps were dismissed mostly during his time in the late 1800s, but he remains one of the most quoted of Native American leaders.  As a warrior, he was an Eagle, as a leader fighting for fair treatment of his people, he was a Hoss indeed!  The Eagle Hoss & Hound podcast is a platform for respect. Respect for the Eagle - the individual with a service background (including spouses). Respect for the Hoss - the Social Integrity Hero from our American past. Plus, the Hound - the common #AmericanMutt - you and me. Follow @EagleIMBUED - J.D. Collier
