Colin Powell was the 65th U.S. Secretary of State serving under President George W. Bush. Prior to that, he had served a distinguished U.S. Army career of nearly 4 decades culminating as the U.S. Military's highest rank and position, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (during Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton).  General Colin Powell had commented that he much enjoyed working in 1987-1989 as President Ronald Reagan's National Secrity Advisor (even while still a 3-Star General).  Having been born to Jamaican immigrants in New York City in 1937, Colin Powell grew up poor but well loved and nurtured amongst his family and neighbors. He proved his work ethic as a teenager working for a shop owner on his block. Attending public schools throughout his years growing up, he graduated from City College of New York in 1958 with a degree in geology.  Gaining his commission from ROTC at CCNY, he became a soldier of the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant. While in the U.S. Army, he experienced the racism of the segregated south while stationed in places like Georgia and North Carolina. Plus, he met and married an Alabama beauty, Alma Johnson, just before shipping off to Vietnam in 1962. Powell was able to witness first-hand the difference between being denied service at a hamburger restaurant in 1962 and later enjoying a hamburger there after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 took effect. He provided calm, determined leadership throughout his Army career and continued serving given his imbued attributes as an Eagle in several roles beyond. Notably, he and Alma started the organization, America's Promise, to enhance the learnings of youth in strengthening his beloved county, the United States of America.  Having just passed away in October 2021, and due to his steadfast devotion to advancing social integrity in all areas of his life and career, Colin Powell is considered a HOSS indeed!
