Dr. Hazel Chung-Knight is an anesthesiologist and one of the founders of the Jamaica School of Nurse Anesthesia. She obtained her MD from The University of the West Indies. In this episode, Dr. Chung-Knight walks us through the events in her life that led her to medicine and anesthesia. She also discusses her experience as a woman in medicine and shares advice for those looking to pursue a career in the medical field.
Adam Beitz is a graduate student studying Chemical Engineering in the Galloway Lab at MIT. His current research focuses on building genetic controllers and characterizing the role of p53 in cellular reprogramming. Before coming to MIT, Adam obtained his BSc in Chemical Engineering from Clemson University. In this episode, we discuss his journey into engineering, his advice for those beginning their careers, and what he enjoys doing in his free time!
Dr. Mandell is a leading expert in synthetic biology, protein engineering, artificial intelligence, and biological and medical informatics. Together with Dr. George Church, he leveraged GROs to produce the first proteins with stability and function dependent on non-standard amino acids. Dr. Mandell completed his PhD at University of California, San Francisco, his MSc at University of Edinburgh, and his undergraduate degree in Symbolic Systems from Stanford University.
Dr. Afshin Beheshti is a researcher at KBR, NASA's Ames Research Center, where he does research with developing the GeneLab project. He obtained his PhD in physics from Florida State and transitioned to studying cancer research for his postdoc. He is involved with many projects at NASA and is the lead of the COVID-19 International Research Team (COV-IRT). In this episode, Dr. Beheshti walks us through some of his projects and his journey to NASA. He also discusses work-life balance and gives tips for those who want to work for NASA someday!
Dr. Tomas Garzon-Muvdi is a Neurosurgeon at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He earned his medical degree from School of Medicine of the Universidad Autonoma De San Luis Potosi in Mexico. He also did his residency at Johns Hopkins Medical School. We discuss his journey into Neurosurgery, his research, and how he manages a work-life balance. Dr. Garzon-Muvdi talks about glioblastoma, approaching a surgery, and patient-centered care.
Dr. Mugele is an Emergency Medicine (EM) physician at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. He obtained his medical degree from University of Michigan, did his residency in EM at University of Indiana, and completed a fellowship in disaster medicine. We discuss his journey into EM, ways to support those considered outcasts by society, and how he learned to make great cookies! We also discuss his work as a residency program director and ways to cope with negative outcomes.
