Civic Media Spotlight (Hour 2)
The spooky segments aren't over yet with John and Gordy up first! Sha’Ron Buie joined to talk about his incredible work across multiple justice and community organizations — from the Federal Defender Service to Madison’s Police Advisory Board and Reentry Councils in both Madison and Milwaukee. He also shared the exciting news that MOSES will be honoring him this November for his ongoing commitment to criminal justice reform and equity. Valley Focus with Lisa Hale got into the Halloween spirit with Ieva Engel, executive director of the Oshkosh Area Humane Society. Ieva shared important pet safety tips to keep your furry friends safe and stress-free during the holiday — from candy hazards to costume comfort — ensuring that every four-legged ghoul can join in the spooky fun safely. On the Todd Allbaugh Show, it was another round of “Mondays with Matenaer,” as Todd and Jane dove into the topic of political tribalism. They took aim at both sides of the aisle — Republicans dodging blame for the government shutdown, and Democrats refusing to call out their own over leadership issues at DPI. The conversation was sharp, honest, and refreshingly self-aware, challenging listeners to demand better accountability from everyone. Last but not least, on the WXCO Morning Report, Chad welcomed Cheryl Martino from NAMI Northwoods to discuss the vital mental health services available in Wausau. Cheryl explained how NAMI’s programs provide support, education, and advocacy for individuals and families navigating mental health challenges — an important reminder that help and community are always within reach. Civic Media Spotlight
Civic Media Spotlight (Hour 1)
Welcome to the spooky edition of the Civic Media Spotlight! First up is Nite Lite, where things got spooky as host and storyteller Carl Sarecki of the Door County Ghost Trolley Tours spun eerie tales from Wisconsin’s peninsula. From haunted happenings in Fish Creek to mysterious sightings in Peninsula State Park, Carl shared the chilling history behind Door County’s haunted past — including the infamous “Murder and Mayhem” tour that keeps even locals on edge. On The Maggie Dawn Show, guest Rachel LaCasse-Ford joined to discuss how political games are leaving families like hers struggling with unaffordable healthcare. While Republicans blame the Affordable Care Act, Maggie and Rachel exposed the hypocrisy of offering no real alternative — leaving everyday Americans to shoulder skyrocketing premiums and uncertainty about their future coverage. Former U.S. Attorney James Santelle stopped by Matenaer on Air for an in-depth conversation about justice, accountability, and the rule of law. They explored the work of Judge Sara Ellis in holding ICE to task in Chicago, and the broader importance of maintaining legal guardrails when government agencies overreach. It was a powerful reminder that standing up to intimidation is essential for protecting communities and democracy itself. On Mathew P. Kennedy, journalist Ruth Conniff from the Wisconsin Examiner tackled a double-barreled discussion — the mishandling of misconduct investigations within the Department of Public Instruction, and the political hypocrisy fueling it. Ruth pointed out how Republican grandstanding has made it harder to address real problems in education, while also breaking down the ripple effects of the GOP’s government shutdown, including rising ACA premiums and farm labor challenges. Civic Media Spotlight
Civic Media Spotlight (Hour 2)
For the second hour of the Civic Media Spotlight,  Professor John Hall joins Maggie Daun to discuss the crucial balance of maintaining an apolitical military amidst the political turbulence of a Trump administration. They explore the implications of military resignations and the unsettling trend of using the National Guard for political gain. Next up we have the WXCO Morning Report with Chad Holmes. Chad sits down with Hillary Hastings and Erin Noll of the Central Wisconsin Educational Theater Alliance to discuss “Designer Handbag Bingo” this Saturday and the upcoming production of “Shrek: The Musical”. Nite Lite with Pete Schwaba is next up where Phil Johnston discusses his film 'The Twits,' a tale of empathy and power, with Natalie Portman lending her voice. Schwaba dives into Johnston’s journey from live-action comedies like 'Cedar Rapids' to animated hits like 'Wreck-It Ralph,' revealing the iterative nature of animation storytelling. Last but certaintly not least, we have the John & Gordy Show! John and Gordy talk with former three time Madison Mayor Paul Soglin about how protests invigorate movements. As a democrat, you do not want to push forward with protests but rather keep them in moderation. He also talked about the significance of moderate candidates in swing districts. Civic Media Spotlight
Civic Media Spotlight (Hour 1)
Hello and welcome to the Civic Media Spotlight! We kick of the first segment with the Todd Allbaugh Show.  Todd welcomes Cap Times Enterprise and Investigative Reporter Danielle DuClos. Danielle is the author of last week’s article calling out Wisconsin’s Department of Public Instruction on some questionable practices surrounding alleged sexual misconduct cases. She has been following this trail of records for a few years now and is ready to bring us the facts. In the second segment, we listen in on our Civic Media reporters talk about the No Kings Protest that happened last weekend. We listen in on Reverend Everett Mitchell on in Madison talk about what needs to be done for the future of America. Following up on that, Pat from Mornings with Pat Krietlow talks deeply about the families of people with developmental disabilities and how they are especially worried about their future now that Republicans have shut down access to key government services and are making health insurance less affordable. Knowing that around 80% of women with some form of intellectual disability have been sexually assaulted, access to contraception and other affordable care is especially important. Pat talks to one mother about the real-life impact of the GOP’s political games on her daughter. In the last segment of the Civic Media Spotlight, we shift our focus to Jane and Greg from Matenaer on Air. A man in Muskego used sidewalk chalk to post a message outside his local post office regarding his thoughts on Democracy and what followed was an investigation, an arrest a court date and another arrest. This story has flown under the radar and we feel more people need to hear about it, as this is a fight for freedom of speech and when a person can be detained for expressing their mind using chalk, this is a problem for his community, this state and the country. We open the discussion up to all after we hear from people who feel self conscious about their feet and men who might feel this isn't a masculine thing to do. We then move onto NEWisco Weekend with Lisa Hale. The cover story was on the Oshkosh Area Community Pantry and the effects that federal cuts had on farmers that donate produce to the pantry. We end the Civic Media Spotlight with Pete from Nite Lite! Pete is joined by Task actor Jamie McShane. Civic Media Spotlight (Hour 1)
To kick off the first hour of the Civic Media Spotlight, we have the Tood Allbaugh Show. Todd talks about Wisconsin sports love with Pat Kreitlow of Mornings with Pat Kreitlow and Trygve Olson of The Lincoln Project, our usual Wednesday guests. Also joining us are producers Sean Hanish and Paul Jaconi-Biery to share how they got involved with the amazing film, No Packers No Life. For the third segment of the Civic Media Spotlight, we have the Maggie Dawn Show. The Supreme Court's term raises alarms with a pivotal case potentially gutting the Voting Rights Act. Devon Ombres, Senior Director, Courts and Legal Policy at the Center for American Progress, critiques the court's anti-woke bias and historical amnesia, warning of dire consequences for minority representation. To finish off the first hour of the Civic Media Spotlight, we have the Mornings with Pat Krietlow. There is an ongoing effort by far-right conservatives to elevate the life of murdered activist Charlie Kirk into something worthy of a national holiday. Pat Kreitlow isn’t buying it and notes that while political violence is abhorrent, he’s among those who won’t stand for people trying to whitewash (pun intended) Kirk’s legacy of racism, misogyny and division. Civic Media Spotlight (Hour 1)
Hello and welcome to the first hour of the Civic Media Spotlight! This is where you can listen to all the best segments of all the shows throughout the network. We kick off with the Matenaer on Air show! Civic Media's Sports Director Jimmie Kaska joins the show to talk about the loss by the Brewers in the NLDS. Jane gets Jimmie to calm Greg down (even though Greg is perfectly calm) and they discuss the pure meltdowns of those in the business of Chicago Sports Writing and why the advancement of the Brewers seems to ruffle the feathers of those who believe "my city deserves it!!". They also talk about the "trade talks" regarding Giannis and why even though the Packers have had a rocky start, there is plenty of season left and we should never count out The Green and Gold. We move onto Nite Lite with Pete Schwaba. Pete talks with Fantasy football fanatic Peter Van Doren, who shares draft strategies, league dynamics, and insights into optimizing your fantasy roster.  With Mornings with Pat Kreitlow, they talk with Chuck Collins. During commercial breaks on Civic Media, Chuck talking about the need to confront this new Gilded Age of billionaires not only buying political power but finding new ways to extract more wealth from the middle class. As the great grandson of a family dynasty, Chuck knows about massive generational wealth and how it’s past time to stem its abuses. He talks to us about his new book, “Burned by Billionaires.” To finish off the first hour of the Civic Media Spotlight, Christine Daniels and Britnie Remer of the Wausau Sustainability, Energy and the Environment Committee join the WXCO morning report with Chad Holmes. Filmmakers Sean Hanish and Paul Jaconi-Biery of Just A Bit Outside join us for their first media appearance promoting their latest film project. No Packers No Life, showcases a group of die-hard Packers fans in Tokyo who made their way to Lambeau. During the WXCO Morning Report, Chad Holmes sits down with Quinn Suchon of Marathon County Literacy Council and what services they provide and about an upcoming Adult Spelling Bee they are hosting. Dr. Kristin Lyerly joins the Matenaer on Air Show with Jane and Greg to talk about the recent press conference from President Trump regarding Tylenol and the unsubstantiated claim of its link to autism if taken by pregnant folks. Dr. Lyerly lays it out in plain flavored English that the study referenced by The White House, while having data which is corroborated, is very narrow in its scope and shouldn't be used to issue such a decree from the president. She also stresses the importance of taking all questions to your doctor, listening to the experts and Dr. Lyerly reassures those who have children with autism, that they did nothing wrong and it isn't their fault. Last but certainly not least, we have Valley Focus, with Lisa Hale. Ieva Engel, the executive director of the Oshkosh Area Humane Society, joins Lisa to discuss the success of the Walk for the Animals fundraising event, and the Grey Muzzle Grant the shelter has received for medical care for senior animals. Civic Media Spotlight
Civic Media Spotlight (Hour 1)
Hello! Welcome to the first hour of the Civic Media Spotlight! We hope you enjoy your stay! We begin with the Maggie Dawn Show! Sarah Harrison, running for State Senate District 5, discusses her logistics expertise and commitment to addressing economic pressures, reproductive rights, and environmental issues, all while emphasizing practical solutions over partisan politics. And she is a champion Excel user (how cool is that)! We then shift our focus to Nite Lite with Pete Schwaba. He is joined by Travel Wisconsin’s Logan Wroge for some trivia fun and talks about what is going on around our great state this fall. Next, we have Mornings with Pat Krietlow. Pat speaks with Jill Underly, Wisconsin Superintendent of Public Instruction, to talk about the annual “State of Education” remarks she recently delivered at the State Capitol. Underly explains how under the Trump administration, the federal government has become the biggest bully in our classrooms. And she addresses whether she thinks the public is recognizing how the legislature is shortchanging public schools, which is forcing a record number of local referendums asking people to raise their property taxes. To end the first hour of the Civic Media Spotlight, we have the John and Gordy Show discussing Tom Homan, the former acting director of ICE. Gordy mocked Tom Homan's voice by doing an over-the-top impression of him, comparing his voice to that of a professional wrestler. JAG found it particularly funny when Homan, in his passionate defense, began referring to himself in the third person, stating, "Tom Homan isn't going anywhere. Tom Homan is not shutting up." Civic Media Spotlight (Hour 2)
To begin the second hour, Todd from the Todd Allbaugh Show brings Cracked.com writer/editor Keegan Kelly, who joined us to talk about the cancellation of Colbert's show, to talk about the end of Jimmy Kimmel Live. Right at the end of the segment, Keegan reminds us that the head of the FCC wrote part of Project 2025. This isn't about what Kimmel said in his show on Monday. It's just an excuse to execute the next part of their plan. I thought it was very punchy. Karen Schneider, publisher of the Oshkosh Herald and the Neenah News joins Lisa Hale from Valley Focus to talk about the stories in the September 17th edition of the Oshkosh Herald. From the status of a sales tax for the county and more, read this week's edition or find out how you can get a copy of the Herald at https://oshkoshherald.com/. Next, John and Gordy have a light hearted conversation with Gary Albrecht, cancer survivor and soon to be 1k Badger Challenge Runner. He talks about the challenges of having cancer, what it took for him to overcome this disease, and why he runs in marathons at 75 years old! To end the Civic Media Spotlight, Chad Holmes sits down during the WXCO Morning Report with Wausau Sustainability, Energy and Environment Committee members Jean Abreu and Carol Lukens. Civic Media Spotlight
Civic Media Spotlight (Hour 1)
To kick things off, we have the Matenaer on Air Show with Jane and Greg discussing a story regarding an elected official who is receiving death threats because of his support of a law restricting certain flags from flying. And though we disagree with the law, we remind the audience that political violence (whether the action or threat) is not right and gets nothing solved. We remind everyone that voting is how we raise our voices and if you don't like who represents you, seek out those who will and vote them into office. We then go on to highlight a person who is very upset with us and shows it through the Voice Note feature of the Civic Media App and though his words are colorful, graphic and a bit unhinged, we support his right to speak his mind and would never want his 1st Amendment rights infringed. Dr. Kathleen Bartzen Culver, Director of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, joins the Maggie Daun Show to discuss the cancellation of Jimmy Kimmel. She warns that efforts to amend or undermine a free press squander one of democracy’s core protections. Dr. Bartzen Culver emphasizes that democracy cannot function without a free, independent, and objective press. On Mornings with Pat Krietlow, a new made-up vaccine review panel created by Health Secretary Robert Kennedy, Jr., parents need a way to look beyond the quackery in Washington, DC to get science-based answers to their vaccine questions. We talk to Wisconsin pediatrician Dr. Kellie Snooks, who has started a new video series for UpNorthNews that includes information about how vaccines work. She gives parents advice on how to work with trusted, fact-based physicians to determine how to keep their children safe from preventable diseases that are, unfortunately, likely to skyrocket soon. To end the first hour, Nite Lite with Pete Schwaba is joined by comedian Greg Schwem for a discussion on his upcoming charity event for colorectal cancer at Zany's in Rosemont. The guys humorously debate the best athletes-turned-actors, with nods to David Bautista and Jason Statham, and discuss bad stadium behavior, including a viral Phillies game incident.
