Fasting and Cancer

Symbolically, fasting is an act of sacrifice, in which one sacrifices food and hunger to God as a mark of devotion and surrender. Fasting purifies the mind, controls passion and the senses, and checks emotions.

But, when it comes to cancer, Fasting may reduce glucose levels in the blood, making it harder for cancers to grow. Cancer cells feed on glucose, consuming it at a much higher level than normal cells do. During fasting, one-way cells try to conserve energy is by making it easier for cell membranes to metabolize insulin.

Let us understand more science behind it and know more about it.

Hope this helps.

How healthy is Artifical Sugar/ Aspartame to us?

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener that has been in use in the United States since the early 1980s. It is used in many foods and beverages because it is much sweeter than sugar, so much less of it can be used to give the same level of sweetness.

Aspartame is commonly used as a tabletop sweetener, as a sweetener in prepared foods and beverages, and in recipes that don’t require too much heating (since heat breaks down aspartame). It can also be found as a flavoring in some medicines, chewing gums, and toothpaste.

IARC, the cancer research agency of the WHO, classifies aspartame as “possibly carcinogenic to humans” (Group 2B). Based on limited evidence it might cause cancer (specifically liver cancer) in people.

artificial sweeteners really harm so much? What is the truth behind it? Let us understand in this episode.

Hope you like the episode.

Does consumption of Sugar causes or increases Cancer?

Our diet plays a big role in our overall health. We know eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is good for us while eating too many sugary foods is not. But does sugar have the ability to cause cancer?

The bottom line is that eating sugar in moderation as part of a healthy diet does not cause cancer. However, eating excessive sugar can contribute to an unhealthy dietary pattern or obesity, which is a risk factor for cancer. Here, learn where the idea that sugar can cause cancer came from, what the science currently says about sugar and cancer risk, and what to know about eating sugar in moderation.

Listen to this interesting conversation to know more about it.

Why is BRCA gene testing important?

A BRCA gene test uses a sample of blood, saliva (spit), or cells from inside of our cheek to look for changes in your BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes that may increase risk of Cancer. Changes in your genes are called gene variants or mutations.

Genes are parts of DNA that you inherit from your parents. They carry information that controls what you look like and how your body works. BRCA genes repair damaged DNA in your cells and protect you from getting certain types of cancer. If you have a harmful variant in your BRCA genes, they may not work properly. This increases your risk of getting cancer.

Drug Resistance in Cancer Treatment

Resistance can occur when cancer cells—even a small group of cells within a tumor—contain molecular changes that make them insensitive to a particular drug before treatment even begins. Because cancer cells within the same tumor often have a variety of molecular changes, this so-called intrinsic resistance is common.

Lets learn more about this in this episode.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and Cancer

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a medical condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein. These clots usually develop in the lower leg, thigh, or pelvis, but they can also occur in the arm.

Sometimes the DVT will break off and go to the lungs. This is called a pulmonary embolism (PE). Cancer patients, especially cancer patients who are receiving chemotherapy, have a much higher risk of DVT than other people. Patients with brain, pancreatic, stomach, and lung cancers are at the highest risk.

We have discussed this in detail and I'm sure it'll help people in need.

Cancer Pain and Its management

Not everyone with cancer may have cancer pain, but some do. If you have cancer that's spread or recurred, the chance of having pain is higher.

Cancer pain takes many forms. It can be dull, achy, sharp or burning. It can be constant, intermittent, mild, moderate or severe. How much pain one feels depends on a number of factors, including the type of cancer one has, how advanced it is, where it's situated and one's pain tolerance.

Pain can be caused by the cancer itself. Pain could happen if the cancer grows into or destroys nearby tissue. As a tumor grows, it can press on nerves, bones or organs. The tumor can also release chemicals that can cause pain.

Listen to this interesting episode where we have demystified a few assumptions and clarified several aspects of cancer pain.

Hope this helps.

Nausea Vomiting During Cancer Treatment

Nausea and vomiting are side effects of cancer therapy and affect most patients who have chemotherapy. Radiation therapy to the brain, gastrointestinal tract, or liver also cause nausea and vomiting.

Nausea is controlled by a part of the autonomic nervous system which controls involuntary body functions (such as breathing or digestion). Vomiting is a reflex controlled in part by a vomiting center in the brain. Vomiting can be triggered by smell, taste, anxiety, pain, motion, or changes in the body caused by inflammation, poor blood flow, or irritation to the stomach.

We have discussed about it in detail here. Do listen and share with someone you think can be benefited.

All about Cancer Treatment related Hairfall

Most hair loss during cancer treatment is caused by chemotherapy. That's because chemo targets rapidly growing cells, which damages hair follicles and makes the hair fall out. But radiation therapy can sometimes cause hair loss, too, when it's used to treat head and neck cancers.

We have talked about this in detail here. Do listen and share with someone you think might get benefited.

Neutropenia in Cancer

Neutropenia is a condition characterized by an abnormally low level of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell that helps to fight infection. Neutropenia is a common side effect of cancer treatment, particularly chemotherapy, which can damage the bone marrow where neutrophils are produced.

When a cancer patient develops neutropenia, they are at increased risk for developing infections, which can be severe and life-threatening. Patients with neutropenia may experience symptoms such as fever, chills, sore throat, and mouth sores, which can be signs of infection.
