Neutropenia is a condition characterized by an abnormally low level of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell that helps to fight infection. Neutropenia is a common side effect of cancer treatment, particularly chemotherapy, which can damage the bone marrow where neutrophils are produced.
When a cancer patient develops neutropenia, they are at increased risk for developing infections, which can be severe and life-threatening. Patients with neutropenia may experience symptoms such as fever, chills, sore throat, and mouth sores, which can be signs of infection.
