Beyond The Bleed
The unspoken mental load of living with Endometriosis and periods with Alex Sheaffe

Endometriosis isn’t just a painful period. Infact, it’s not even just about the physical symptoms. It takes a mental, emotional and social toll that is rarely spoken about, or even acknowledged.

In this episode of Beyond the Bleed, we chat to Naturopath & Nutritionist Alex Sheaffe (she/her) - who has learnt the hard way of how to manage heavy menstrual bleeding, fibroids and navigating a long journey to an Endometriosis diagnosis. Together we explore the hidden challenges of navigating life with Endo, the emotional labour it takes to manage your body and your life, and practical ways to reclaim control, resilience and self-compassion.

As two Naturopaths both living with Endometriosis, we get the mental load that living with Endo (suspected or diagnosed…or any other chronic health condition really) brings.

If you’re currently feeling overwhelmed, misunderstood or exhausted by your pelvic pain/Endo, we hope the episode helps you feel less alone in your journey - and reminds you that hope and help is out there for you!

Beyond The Bleed
5. How training for a half marathon healed my relationship with my body

After one run in 2023 that left me on the floor in the fetal position feeling clammy & nauseous with pelvic pain, I developed the belief of: “Because of my pelvic pain, I can’t run anymore”.

In this solo episode of Beyond the Bleed, I’m sharing how that moment really shaped the way I related to my body AND how training for a half marathon (even though on the day I woke up and was unable to run it - more on that in the episode), helped me rebuild trust, safety, and connection with my body.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • How pain can create deep-seated fear and distrust in our bodies
  • Why “I can’t” is often a story built from protection
  • What training for a half marathon taught me about compassion, pacing, and body trust

If you’ve ever felt disconnected from your body, or like it’s betrayed you, this episode is for you.

4. Energetics of Your Menstrual Cycle: why following the ‘four phases’ might not be working for you

The “Four Phases” of the menstrual cycle is spoken about a lot online - BUT sometimes trying to follow this framework can hinder your growth (not help).

In this episode of Beyond The Bleed, I take you on a deep dive into the 4 phases of the menstrual cycle and why the ‘textbook version’ won’t work for everyone. Together we explore how your unique cycle can differ from the traditional model, how to read the signals your body is sending and practical ways to work with your cycle, rather than against it.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • What the four phases of the menstrual cycle are
  • How following these 4 phases could be hindering - not helping you progress
  • How to track your cycle and what to track for real, usable data
  • Practical strategies to honour your cycle and feel more in control

If you’re currently feeling disconnected and confused about your cycle, wondering why, despite doing “all the right things”, you’re still feeling stuck in a cycle of symptoms - tune in to hear how understanding your unique rhythm could be the key the feeling empowered again.

This is a topic I’m so passionate about, and I can’t wait for you to tune in!

3. Reclaiming your cycle in a patriarchal world with Nikita Maddren

Ever felt the pressure to shrink yourself, hustle through your period and put your needs last?

Cos, SAME! And in this episode we’re going to do change that.

In this episode, I’m joined by Nikita Maddren (she/her), a fellow Naturopath passionate about helping people with periods reclaim their health outside of the pressure of societal expectations.

Together, we explore how body image, food pressures, and patriarchal systems influence our cycles and the way we view our bodies. AND what it looks like to step outside those expectations to find true nourishment and connection with your body.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • How the patriarchy, capitalism and diet culture have shaped the way people with periods view their bodies and cycles
  • The impact of diet culture on ovulation, stress, and long-term hormonal health
  • Practical strategies to start redefining your relationship with food and body image
  • Tools for cultivating body neutrality and moving towards body confidence
  • How small shifts in perspective can free up brain space, energy, and self-trust

Tune in to hear how reclaiming your cycle outside of patriarchal standards can be the first step back to freedom!!

Nikita and I would both like to acknowledge our privilege as cisgender western women in being able to sit down and have this conversation openly. We acknowledge how much of what we discussed in this episode is not possible for many AFABs and women in many parts of the world today where systemic barriers, stigma, and lack of access to healthcare mean their voices are often silenced.
