Airwave YGK Artists in Residence
Kahraba Interview and Performance at CFRC Studios
On January 20th 2025, local experimental sound artist and DJ Michael Boulos performed live music on CFRC’s airwaves created during his recent Airwave YGK residency, a creative opportunity that supports and showcases young and/or emerging artists. You can learn about his craft through an interview also undertaken with him in this series. Boulos’s project entitled “Kahraba” (previously “sotemm/ⲥⲱⲧⲙ”) is a demonstration that music and performance has no barrier for entry. With a focus on No Input Mixing Board (NIMB) techniques and brandishing a worn-through and hand-me-down mixing board, Boulos has cut their teeth over the years facilitating, attending, and performing experimental and noise shows in and around Ontario and Montreal. With an understanding and appreciation for the live aspect of noise and experimental music, Kahraba condenses what appeals to Boulos the most. The result is a focus on ebbs, flows, hums, pulses, blares, and shrieks. For Boulos’s live to air set, Boulos will continue work under the Kahraba moniker to perform a piece unique to the station and its facilities through the use of microphones and contact mics. The piece was recorded live, and dubbed to cassette tapes. Reach out to them if you would be interested in a copy, nostaticradioshow@gmail.com. Experimental, innovative, and noisy, listeners can expect a journey singular amongst Airwave residences this January. Additionally, Joseph Guido interviews Boulos in this episode about Boulos’ musical endeavours, “practice” or lack thereof, influences, and more. We hope you enjoy the program. Kahraba, and other Airwave YGK Musician Residencies are made possible through the generous support of the @kingstonartscouncil and @city.of.kingston Guest: Michael Boulos Host: Joseph Guido Executive Producer: Dinah Jansen Producer: Chancelor Maracle
