    Les systèmes nerveux et immunitaires régissent les interactions entre les organismes vivants et le monde qui les entoure : ils régulent les différents aspects de ces interactions, de la perception sensorielle à la réponse aux infections virales, jusqu'aux conditions de vie en symbiose avec l'ensemble des microorganismes formant le microbiote.

    Si ces deux grands systèmes ont traditionnellement été étudiés de manière séparée, de nombreuses études ont mis en évidence, ces dernières années, l'importance des régulations neuro-immunitaires croisées. Celles-ci sont observables à l'échelle cellulaire et moléculaire, et mettent en évidence un dialogue constant entre le système nerveux et le système immunitaire. Pour n'en citer que quelques exemples : les rôles des cellules immunitaires dans le développement, la physiologie et les pathologies cérébrales, notamment les maladies neurodégénératives comme la maladie d'Alzheimer ; les effets d'infections virales ou bactériennes et du microbiote sur les fonctions cérébrales tout au long de la vie ; l'effet placebo qui peut influencer certaines réponses immunitaires. Comment ces nouvelles données scientifiques modifient-elles notre vision du fonctionnement du cerveau, et du corps en général ? Comment les études sur la physiologie normale peuvent-elles nous aider à mieux comprendre les maladies ? Comment intégrer ces résultats scientifiques dans un cadre conceptuel scientifique et rationnel ?

    L'objectif de cette chaire est de présenter ces avancées et de discuter de ces nouvelles études, qui constituent un champ émergent, en partant de travaux de recherche fondamentale et appliquée. Caractériser ces interactions neuro-immunitaires est source d'espoir, et potentiellement d'illusions, pour le développement de nouvelles approches thérapeutiques ciblant différentes pathologies. C'est pourquoi il est primordial de replacer les faits scientifiques au cœur de la discussion, préciser ce qui est établi dans des modèles animaux, mais reste à explorer chez l'homme, afin d'accompagner la progression des savoirs et des connaissances de manière rationnelle.

    Depuis 2020, Sonia Garel est titulaire de la chaire Neurobiologie et immunité. Ses recherches portent sur le développement des circuits cérébraux, aussi bien d'un point de vue fondamental qu'appliqué à la compréhension de certaines pathologies. Ses travaux l'ont menée à décrypter le rôle de la migration cellulaire et des interactions transitoires dans le développement cérébral, avec un focus sur les cellules immunitaires résidentes du cerveau, les microglies.
