"امنحوا الشباب الفرص والثقة ليقدموا عملا كبيرا ومهما سيشعر الجميع بأثره البالغ لاحقا"، رسالة أحد الشباب الذي حمل أفكاره في العمل المناخي للمشاركة في فعاليات المنتدى السياسي رفيع المستوى لأهداف التنمية المستدامة، وهو أحمد فتحي الذي يقود منظمة مصرية تنشط في مجال العمل المناخي.
أحمد فتحي مؤسس مؤسسة واي إل إي (YLE) كان يركز في مشاركته خلال المنتدى السياسي رفيع المستوى على الهدف 14 وهو الحياة تحت الماء، حيث قال لأخبار الأمم المتحدة: "مع الأسف كل المؤشرات تقول إن هذا الهدف هو الأقل حصولا على التمويل بين أهداف التنمية المستدامة".
لكن أحمد وزملاءه يعملون بكد بما لديهم في حملات تهدف لحماية البيئة والمياه، مثل تلك التي نفذوها في مدينة مرسى مطروح الساحلية التي تطل على البحر المتوسط، للحد من استخدام البلاستيك، حيث جمعوا "أكثر من 300 كيلوجراما من المخلفات البلاستيكية، بمشاركة مجموعة كبيرة من الشباب".
وأعرب عن أمله في أن يكون يشهد الاجتماع القادم للجنة التفاوض الحكومية في جنيف المقرر في آب/أغسطس بهدف التوصل إلى اتفاق ملزم قانونا بشأن التلوث بالمواد البلاستيكية، انفراجة من أجل التوصل لذلك الاتفاق.
وحذر من تأثير البلاستيك على البيئة قائلا: "كل كيس بلاستيكي يتم استخدامه لمدة خمس أو عشر دقائق، يبقى في البيئة ما بين 200 و600 سنة".
