Travel with Friends

We're back after a quick hiatus and were inspired by Lydia's current tropical location to cover traveling with friends. We're talking through the trials, tribulations (and joys!!!) of traveling with our friends, and drop our experiences and some helpful tips on how to make the most of a friend trip.

This episode we're covering a lot: The FOMO of seeing your friends hanging out with their other friends, how to contribute to a trip, why consistency and commitment is key, navigating budget and points of friction, and picking the right trip for your group.

Would You Say Yes To A Dinner With Six Strangers? Feat. Samantha from & the Table

We promised new guests would be gracing us soon and here we are with a guest we are SO excited about. Meet Samantha, the founder of & the table, a dinner series she started in Amsterdam where six women show up solo to a dinner table for a delicious meal and nourishing conversation.

& the Table strives to become the dinner experience to facilitate women to engage with new ambitious women in and out of their city that they have not crossed paths with yet. It’s driven by the notion that you can never stop learning from the perspectives of the women around you and helps build connections beyond the casual "what do you do for work" in order to strengthen the foundation of the ambitious women you meet.

We're always energized by conversations that stretch our ideas and feelings around meeting new women, showing up wholeheartedly and chasing the joy in connection. And Samantha and & the table is a true embodiment of that.

How we're navigating change

Happy Thursday! We're back with a new episode where we're covering how we're approaching some changes in our lives. We're both facing some big shifts with Lydia returning to the office and Lulu moving in with her partner which led us to musing about how to prioritize friendships as we navigate those adjustments and establish new routines. We're covering how we can approach making plans like habit stacking (from our favorite book, Atomic Habits), the 3 parts to making a plan with friends (and where we get hung up), how the pandemic has shifted our approach meeting up with friends, the things that demotivate us from catching up, and why our friends are often the perfect remedy to it.

Three strikes and you're out

Inspired by last week's episode, we're keeping it short and sweet by focusing on the three strikes rule. We've talked about boundaries ad nauseam on this podcast, but we loved the simplicity of @heymisskelssey's approach: Giving someone three opportunities to change a behavior. The intention each time is a little different, but this framework offers the opportunity for growth in our friendship while prioritizing respect and boundaries individually. We're covering self-awareness (or lack thereof), reciprocity in our friendships, and how feedback can help you grow in your friendships.

Episodes we referenced:

  • I'm being iced out...now what? (the previous episode)
  • Finding meaning and connection through books (feat. Kat Cavano)

I'm being iced out...now what?

We're coming in hot with a a new episode that delves into one of the worst friendship experiences: Being dropped by a friend group. Whew, anyone else cringe just thinking about this?

While this is something that we might have experienced more frequently growing up, this dynamic still persists into adulthood and even though we're older and wiser, being left out still hurts just as much. We're covering a lot: Including the stages of being iced out, how to change the script and address it, why someone might get dropped from a group, group dynamics and group think, the myth of the girl group, mourning the loss of a friendship, what to do when you're on the other side of dropping a friend, and how to move forward with your friendships in the future.

Past episodes we referenced:

  • Growing within Relationships (feat. Anisa Sudra)
  • Taking Inventory of Our Friendships

Questions of the week: What would you say to someone who is going through this right now? What advice would you give to someone who might be considering dropping a friend from a group?

How Your Friends Influence You

This week we're coming to you from hell! That's a joke, well, mostly. We are starting this episode off by addressing the overturning of Roe V. Wade and how we're coping (terribly, thanks for asking!). We're sharing how we're trying to keep some positivity alive, but more importantly make a difference! If you, like us, struggle with feeling that you're not doing enough right now, here are some ideas we shared:

  • Wearing black on the 4th of July
  • Prioritizing your spending towards businesses that align with your values. (A great starting point is the progressive shopper but make sure to do your own research as well). Vote with you hard earned $$$!
  • Check out Girl & The Gov to stay up to informed on getting involved with politics locally and nationally (You can listen to our guest episode with them here)
  • Amplifying stories of brave women and people with uteruses
    • Sharing your gifts! You can use your skills and talents to support those who are experts in this space
    • Donating where you can. This can be amazing organizations like Planned Parenthood but also individual creators and smaller accounts who create content that you get value out of

In the second half, we're switching gears and giving a little bit of an escape with a more lighthearted topic. This week we're covering how our friends influence us and vice versa. We've been seeing lots of posts and questions about pressure and influence from friends and we thought it was a great time to address it. We're covering the types of pressure we commonly see and how we try to balance our individual identities with belonging or listening to people whose opinions matter. We're also talking about the things we've been influenced to try or buy along the way thanks to our friends.

Question of the week: What are you most influenced to purchase from your friends recommendations?

Here are the products that we mentioned (*we're not selling anything, nor do we get commission, we just love these products*):

  • You're the Only One I've Told by Meera Shah
  • Skinfix Barrier+ Triple Lipid-Peptide Face Cream
  • Skinny Confidential Ice Roller
  • GE Opal Nugget Ice Maker

And in case you missed it: We're taking a break for the month of July, but will be back and better than ever in August!

Friendship with Your Mom

We've wanted to address the question of "can you really be friends with your mom?" for a while, so we're exploring this unique friendship in today's episode. We're discussing how these relationships change as you get older, the type of friendship we have with our own moms, how we need to drop the idea of "perfection" when it comes to our moms (and ourselves), the ebb and flow of these relationships, and when we value our mom's guidance the most. The mother role can be really challenging and unique – it's not going to look the same for any one person, so we hope that this episode provides some fresh insight – whatever that relationships looks like for you.

Disclaimer: We realize this might be a sensitive topic for some, so please only listen if it's right for you

Question of the week: What are 3 things your mom instilled in you or that you learned from her when it comes to friendships?

Quotes of the Week:

  • “The mother-daughter relationship may be one of the most complex that exists in all of human relations, both more intimate but also at times more fraught with difficulty.” – Jen Doll
  • "I love you, but I don't like you." – The Flight Attendant

How Money Influences Friendships

We've talked about finances on the podcast before (check out our "Friendship on a Budget" episode), but we wanted to explore some of the other ways that money can impact our friendships. When it comes to friendship, there aren't always clear expectations or etiquette and we've probably all experienced a scenario where finances or spending has created friction or even resentment.

In this episode we're covering the mentality of "I'll get this round," Venmo etiquette, being sensitive to budgets, when you should pay, what to expect if you're hosting, and lending money to friends. At the end of the day, our friends are worth a lot, and we hope this episode provides some actionable tips and strategies to keep finances and friendships harmonious.

Addressing Anxiety in Friendships: 4 Steps to Better Communication

This week we're coming in hot with a new episode all around the anxieties we feel in our friendships. If you're like us, we sometimes get a little in our head. We wonder if our friends are mad at us, if something we said was awkward, or generally replay things over and over until they start to well...take on a life of their own. We're covering a lot of things, but here are the key take-aways:

  • Sometimes it's better to cancel!
  • If you're upset, it's your job to communicate, not anyone's job to guess
  • Beware the kitchen sink: Think through (or write out!) what is at the root of the problem and don't pile on grievances in one conversation
  • Acknowledge what people are doing well too

If you find yourself in a place where you're making stories and there's something you need to address, follow these 4 steps for better communication:

  1. This is what happened, what I experienced (simple, direct, observable)
  2. This is what I made up about it (what you imagined)
  3. This is how I feel about it (your choices are: joy, pain, anger, fear, shame, guilt, love)
  4. This is what you (the other person) could do about it.

You don't have to be for everyone

This episode was inspired by a quote that resonated with both of us: "Learn to be ok with the fact that you're not for everyone. You shouldn't even want to be." This week we've diving into one those topics that took us some time to "get." We're exploring why we've been predisposed to get along and "fit in" with everyone and how that begins to shift later in your twenties. We both share our own struggles with this topic and the ways in which we're striving to balance being true to our authentic selves with where it's okay to code switch or compromise. Whether this doesn't resonate yet, or this is a timely reminder, we hope this episode provides some insight or validation in showing up as your authentic self.

Question of the week: What advice would you give to someone who is concerned with people not liking them?

This week we're keeping it short and sweet with a topic that we think is just * the cutest * and that is creating new traditions in our friendship. This episode we are talking about how traditions can elevate our friendships, our favorite traditions we share with friends, and traditions we want to start to create something lasting and meaningful.

Friendship on a Budget

If you're like us, being financially savvy might not be your first nature, but this week we're getting right down to it on a topic that can be * so * awkward to talk about in friendships: Money. This week, we're challenging ourselves to put our friendships on a budget and talk candidly about how we're trying to take charge of our finances. In this episode we dive into how financial dynamics change in your mid-late twenties, discuss why we should factor friendship into our budgets and explore some ways budgeting can encourage trying new things and grow your friendships. We hope this episode makes you more conscious about prioritizing "money well spent" for experiences and time with friends that leaves you feeling whole.

This week in honor of two very special milestones (Lulu's birthday and our cool lil' podcast turning a whole year old!), we're keeping it short and sweet with some musings on birthdays and how to celebrate with friends and loved ones. We're dropping some ideas on how to make your friends feel special, our musings about getting older (and hopefully wiser?) and talk about our own birthday traditions. So whether you celebrate birthday, birthday week, or birthday month, this episode is all about having your cake and eating it too.

Taking Inventory of Our Friendships

This week we are taking a cue from Spring Cleaning with a longer episode focused on taking an inventory of our time and where we're spending it: In our friendships, relationships, and everything else. This week we're musing about how we're prioritizing friendships, tiers of friendships, resetting boundaries and beginning to start new friendships. Listen along as we share practical tips and questions to guide that reflection and also role play some scenarios around having tougher conversations and setting boundaries in our friendships.

Questions to guide taking inventory:

  • Are there things I've been putting up with that I should get off my chest?
  • Are there boundaries I need to set or expectations I need to clarify?
  • What are my core values right now?
  • Who are my top tier and second tier friends?
  • What are me needs and where am I in my life?
  • What do I need more of and less of right now?

Question of the week: How would you set a boundary with a friend around the amount of time you're spending with them?

Not sponsored, but Lulu makes a shameless plug for her Whoop and we talk through how we're taking alcohol and drinking out of the mix to get better sleep and quality of life (and the challenges/anxieties) that come with cutting back on something so imbedded in our social culture.

When Your Friends Move Away

We're back! And coming in hot with a new episode that covers something new and disturbing that we didn't see coming: Reaching a point where the group of friends you've finally created is...leaving you???

Between exciting new jobs, moving for love, or just wanting something different, we realized that both of us were losing friends left and right to the the natural shake ups that happens in your twenties. Listen along as we talk through how we're handling this recent development (hint: not well!!!), how we're approaching creating new friendships, re-opening our proverbial friendship books, and falling back in love with the cities we currently live in.

Do we spend some time wallowing in our feels? Yes, yes we do. Does this involve a poem from Rupi Kaur that really wrecked us? Obviously. Do we also end on a high note that left us feeling excited? Absolutely. And we hope the prospect of all the amazing friends that you haven't met yet gets you feeling excited too!

Made a new friend lately? Or moved an acquaintance to a friend? We want to hear about it! DM us, comment, etc. so we can highlight it on our next episode!
