In this episode, we peek into the brilliant minds of K and Edwin K., one of the Lead Pastors of The Evolution, as they unpack the key elements of Leadership Excellence—with a playful geek-out moment over their favourite Olympic highlights.🏅⛹️♂️🏓
The conversation opens with the often-misunderstood concept of willingness to serve, not as a weakness but as a powerful life value that motivates and sustains effective leadership.
The discussion then shifts to opportunities: seizing opportunities isn’t just about titles or promotions but opening doors to personal growth. K and E introduce an interesting study highlighted in a Harvard Business Review article, discussing gender differences in responses to “low-promotability” opportunities and what that means for aspiring leaders.
In the latter half, K and E address practical questions from guests on maintaining consistency and meeting expectations through varying seasons of life. (Real talk. FRFR.) They wrap with an essential takeaway: that the ultimate aim of leadership and greatness is to love people better.
This is a really helpful one on getting practical!

3 Truths about Opportunities:
Truth #1: Opportunities come from people in authority.
(The bosses, managers, interviewer, God)
Truth #2: Opportunities are earned not given.
(Prove that you are a worthy prospect)
Truth #3: Opportunities are a chance for personal growth, more than a promotion or paycheck.
(Personal growth is what ensures that the promotion is the first of many to come)

Last week, strengths, success, and significance. In this second half, C + K talk the difference between giving hope and being a visionary. Spoiler alert! You don’t need a grand visions to become a great leader.
We speak candidly on this being a hard season at The Evolution, and how to keep hope alive in tough times. C shares a simple 4 Ps formula to staying positive by knowing ourselves, leaning into our passions, disciplining our thoughts and actions (prayer included!), and surrounding ourselves with people that lift us up.
On the topic of synergy, C + K field questions on alignment of values both in groups and as individuals. And K shares her takeaways from Patrick Lencioni, on the 5 dysfunctions that can break up a team. Team doesn’t just happen when people come together, real teams become teams because of a lot of intention.
This one is packed with practical insights and strategies. Let’s be better leaders and build greater teams!

It’s the final EP of Season 1. Some brief one-liner Xmas singing occurs, we give away EXCLUSIVE MERCH to our number 1 fan and youth donor, AND we go everywhere with this convo. Virgil Abloh’s 3% approach to fashion and his brand Off-White, what’s happening in C + K’s personal lives? Capacity, Ideas and the little changes and consistent habits we need to create the future.
We also talk The Evolution of course. 3 things we’re focussing on in 2022, leaders stepping back to make space for next gen leaders to rise. Which UCH EPs have been our favourites to record? And new stuff we’ve been listening to and reading.
Then, we end on 1 important thought:
FAITH is trust that THE FUTURE will be okay...
And that allows us to live in the NOW without anxiety.
Thanks for hanging with us this year. Happy Holidays and cheers to a better 2022!

In EP 29, we go at identity again— and how it relates practically to figuring our personal whys, deciding which school and career paths to pursue and how to succeed at doing life. We also take on QUESTIONS…
How do I know something is really my passion and not just my ego or other’s expectations?
Can I have multiple things that I’m good at?
What should I prioritise? Money or passion?
Is it possible to never find my why? Must my why be clearly articulated?
How can I break out of the boxes a limited school system puts me in?
We discuss ideas from Simon Sinek’s Find Your Why, Angela Duckworth’s Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance and Liz Wiseman’s How to Take the Lead, Play Bigger, and Multiply Your Impact. And we talk about why connecting your why to impacting others, matters.

This week, K’s bestie— REGINA LOO joins us at the UCH table! After we talk who’s bossier and who’s taste in music is better… *awkward*, we talk Regina’s latest obsession: Crypto currency. It’s the ‘in-thing’ now ain’t it?
Well, what is crypto? What’s the deal with blockchain technology? How does it work? How stable or volatile is crypto currency really, and what factors determine both? We talk the security of the technology itself, the hack-ability of your crypto wallet and the ways you can ‘lose’ it. Word to the wise: If you tend to lose your actual wallet and forget your passwords…you might want to step up your game if you’re thinking of going crypto. Lol.
We also talk crypto scams— can anyone say, “Squid Coin”? Don’t worry, it’s not as ‘dangerous’ as you think…IF you do your homework. But remember: There is no current legal recourse if you buy into a crypto scam.
Then we cover NFTs. The new art and creative world of a now and future metaverse.
DISCLAIMER:
We’re not experts. We’re figuring this out like you are. So please, do your homework and keep an eye on your wallet. Happy (but careful) investing.
—
💌 Our love & gratitude to Regina Loo. Thanks for always being willing to show up and bring your wise and intelligent mind.

In Part 2 with our guest ESTELLA LOW, we talk creativity. A ‘creative-identity-crisis’, creative work and creative rest.
C chats with Estella about her recent crisis with the label “creative”—how there’s often a gap between our theology and personal experience that theology, and how for too long, there’s been a rigid left & right brain dichotomy in science that has translated into a ‘pragmatics-are-logical V. artists-are-messy’ divide in church communities.
We side track into a discussion about personality tests and personal mission statements, and what’s the better way of interacting with those tools on the way to discovering our truest selves.
Then, we talk creative rest and creative work. C asks for some advice on keeping the Sabbath for artists…and we get real about capitalism and what God’s way of life for humanity is supposed to look like. Finally, K takes us through a round of Would You Rather.
—
💌 Our love to Estella Low. You challenge and inspire. I’m grateful you are in my life and part of our community — C.

Our first ever guest—ESTELLA LOW is in the UCH house! We talk her and C’s enduring friendship—first dates, first impressions and moving in together…how similar and how different they both are.
In Part 1, we get into the Christian concept of Sabbath. What it means for individual rest, sharing in community and resistance to capitalism. How we can ‘rest’ and still be hurried, how we musn’t confuse isolation for solitude. We also chat how contemplative practices and traditional liturgy can help us achieve quality rest, and find a moment of solitude with God, in the midst of worshipping in community.
Estella takes us through the practice of Examen, and fields questions from K and our production team.

This week, we’re doing the EP a ‘lil different. C shares about Calling, off a life-changing lesson that she had with Paul Scanlon at his mentorship group.
We start with what it was like to have grown up with a charismatic, evangelical definition of ‘calling’—the beauty and severe flaws that came with it, and how we’ve been trying to redefine it at The Evolution.
We talk about how everyone is born with their calling ‘in-built’, the way calling differs from identity and how to uncover both. Then, what to do with resistance to our callings—everything from imposter syndrome, to disagreeing with where the calling might take us, and the struggle with our ego…with wanting to experience personal success and see ‘the end’ within our lifetime.
Calling comes with responsibility versus feeling capable, abiding strength instead of clear instructions. We need to embrace the ‘classroom’ of that tension, navigating both the ‘push’ and ‘pull’ energies calling brings with it so we can keep moving forwards and creating true legacy.
📌 BONUS Q&A with K and the peeps in our production booth. [Starts at 51:25]

We spent 2021 training preachers…well K did, and we thought we’d talk about it.
Ever wondered what goes in message prep each week at The Evolution? Or about which messages we found the hardest to preach or were proudest of? What are the ingredients that go into great communication? And how does great communication apply to life and leadership.
We chat whether there’s ever such a thing as ‘simple truth’, the importance of both scripting and delivery…and what happens whenever we get writers block…
Then, how to identify and bring out the best in a speaker (*cough* leader)?
Oh, and we continue our attempts at bettering our podcast intros. Lol.

In this week’s EP… rabbit-holes & doggie-ditches. THAT and we take apart the world’s obsession with “The Pursuit of Happiness”. Is happiness something that can be chased? Do we achieve it when we attain what we want or arrive at our ideal future? And what the heck does neuroscience and philosophy have to agree on it?
We discuss insights from Dr. Emily Esfahani Smith (The Power of Meaning: Finding Fulfilment in a World Obsessed with Happiness), Dr. Daniel Liberman & Michael Long (Molecule of More), and Dr. Andrew Huberman (The Huberman Lab)...everything from meaning and transcendence, to hedonic v. eudaemonic happiness, to the crazy effects of dopamine on brains and subsequently our motivation and sense of contentment.
Desire the future but fall in love with the process.

One more. C & K breakdown the highlights, surprises, mind-changers from our Gen Zs V Millennials EP.
What’s happening with how each gen defines “friends” and does connection?
What’s really going on when we use social media?
Is ‘ghosting’ a bad rep Gen Z should get stuck with?
Are Millennials really more receptive to advice?
Who’s more or less materialistic?
And who does social justice and selflessness better?
And finally, what do both gens need? And how can leaders mentor each more effectively?
There’s more that brings us together than you might think.

The cross-talk continues! In Part 2, we discuss: Technology, Social Media, Work & Spirituality.
What are our online search habits and approaches to learning? Do likes and posting times matter? Plus a story about secondary school tagging drama. Then, a contentious (woo…) chat about Gen Z ranting and raging on social media and whether Millennials find it…appropriate.
Who’s more committed and loyal at work? And how does each side relate to their bosses, mentoring and feedback? Then, what is ’good’ and what is ‘beautiful’ when it comes to spirituality and humanity, and why does that sometimes create tension between both gens?
Fun x2.

So. Singapore is working changes to go endemic, and the world is headed into a 3rd year of living with COVID. Our adrenal glads are shot, and we’re all consciously or unconsciously responding (or REACTING) to anxiety. Some of us are dying to change things up, some us want to withdraw and shut down, some of us feel guilty (wait what? Yep. ) about loving WFH too much. lol.
We talk Amy Cuddy’s “Scaffold Effect” and whether how we’re feeling will wear off eventually. How to create some semblance of stability in so much uncertainly and what C means by “shadow security”.
Then, we chat how ‘fear kills’. The domino effect that happens in our brain-body matrix when we worry too much, but also some great tips on how to cycle out of worry and tame our anxiety.
It’s gonna be ok, friend. Humans will survive!

IT’S A SHOWDOWN!!! Christine, Edwin, Kye & Iyshu join Karis for the ultimate two-parter on Gen Zs and Millennials.
We start with the low-down on which world events defined each generation and fly into a discussion on the good and bad reps each side gets tagged with. Are Millennials stuck on participation trophies? Is Gen Z too rude? Is one gen more idealistic or pragmatic than the other? Who has more ‘friends’??
Then, a dive into how each gen looks at money—making it, saving it, spending it, investing it. We talk side hustles, retirement funds, exclusive fashion and buying habits…even student loans.
There’s even a random game at the end of this one. Fun.

As the world opens up, The Evolution heads into a phase of rebuilding. We talk the difference between culture and vision, and why culture is absolutely essential to ‘who’ +EVO becomes in the future.
What’s changed? What hasn’t? What does it take to pivot from an old version to a new vision of leadership? How can we stay rigorous with culture when Gen Z and Millennials require different approaches? And is it possible to lead when we ourselves are in that process of figuring out a way forward?
Take heart. The great peeps that you want aren’t sweating the external stuff. They are looking for a good community to connect with and a great culture to belong to.
