MTHFR Stories are interviews with regular people who have MTHFR and are willing to share their health journey to help others.
Mary's MTHFR journey centers around pregnancy loss with several second-trimester miscarriages and a stillbirth. She bravely talks about the exhaustion that she has struggled with after such a deep physical toll was taken on her body by the pregnancies, and the emotional journey she has been on. Mary has other issues associated with MTHFR as well including hypermobility and hypothyroidism, both of which contributed to her difficult pregnancies.
Mary's journey is a reminder to women to advocate for themselves, not to blindly trust it when your doctor says "it's normal," and to do their own research about recommendations, such as 5 mg of folic acid for women struggling with infertility who also have MTHFR gene mutations.

The To Health With That! Podcast for MTHFR folks has been a wild ride, but so far it's really just Dr. Amy talking about MTHFR.In Season Five, which will start airing in September, I want YOU to talk. Tell me about your experience of being a person with MTHFR gene mutations, tell me what has helped you, what hasn't been helpful, and what you want all the other MTHFR folks out there to know.Your journey probably has other conditions intersecting as well. Maybe it's diabetes, migraines, thyroid conditions, infertility, or breast implant illness. Maybe it's chronic fatigue, mold illness, or something totally different. I want to hear about all of it. If you're an MTHFR mutant, I'd love to hear from you.Share your story on the podcast! In the last episode, we talked about CBD as a methylation adaptogen, but we haven' talked too much about that term so let's dive in. We know that everyday methylation is important for people with the MTHFR gene or with any methylation dysfunction, but it turns out that long-term methylation care is important too and this can be achieved by getting methylation adaptogens.Methylation adaptogens are substances that help to regulate the amount your genes are methylated. Remember that when genes are methyalted, they are turned off and when they are unmethylated they are turned on. So having stretches of your genome that are undermethylated means the genes in there are allowed to function out of control, and that could lead to bigger problems like cancer.Methylating your genes appropriately is one of the long-term ways to prevent disease and even benefit your children, because research has shown that the way you methylate your genes might pass to your children. Not just the genes themselves, but the methylation tags. The most researched compounds that have been called methylation adaptogens come from food sources - things like caffeic acid from coffee and cruciferous veggies, lycopene from tomatoes and watermelon, resveratrol from red wine. Pot is the third most used drug in North America after alcohol and tobacco, so questions about Cannabis and MTHFR are important to ask. The answers, of course, are mixed with some serious pitfalls and also some surprising benefits of CBD for people with MTHFR gene mutations.Nothing is ever fully good or fully bad, and marijuana for MTHFR is the same. When you have an MTHFR gene variant, it is important to know your own risks to make an educated decision about what you want to put in your body. Medical marijuana is widely available and can come in various strengths of THC and CBD, which will affect people with the MTHFR gene mutation in different ways. With MTHFR we do have a different risk profile than average, so educate yourself, advocate for yourself, and be careful about what you put in your body. Thanks so much for watching! Methylation imbalance and the causative factors leading to methylation imbalance, like the MTHFR gene mutation, show themselves in four distinct personality types. These methylation personality types, methylation archetypes, or MTHFR personalities are called The Achiever, The Athlete, The Activist, and The Artist. The Activist and The Artist are very closely linked. Neither are terribly ambitious or driven, except in the thing that matters to them, whether it's their art, their job (which might not be art or activism), or the cause that matters to them. Both tend to have fewer allergic-type reactions but are more likely to have food sensitivities or chemical sensitivities. Things like wheat sensitivity, soy sensitivity, rashes with the wrong laundry detergent, or headaches after smelling perfume. Both of these personalities thrive on leftovers and fermented foods, even though leftovers and fermented foods are high in histamine. These two personality types also tend to react predictably to supplements, nutrients, and even pharmaceutical drugs. Anything that boosts serotonin, so SSRI medications, St. John's Wort, and melatonin aren't great for these groups. Likewise, the major methyl donors like SAMe, TMG, and DMG are typically not well tolerated by the artist and the activist. Conversely, these groups usually do very well with good sources of folate, like L-5MTHF, food-sourced folate, or folinic acid. Like all people with methylation imbalance, folic acid should not be taken because it can make methylation imbalances worse. Also, the benzodiazepine class of pharmaceuticals is usually well tolerated (although your doctor knows the best choice of pharmaceuticals for you, and your doctor's information is always more informed and correct for you than ours.)Thanks so much for watching today! Methylation imbalance, often caused by the MTHFR gene mutation, by folic acid excess, or by nutritional deficiencies, shows itself in several personality traits. Some personality traits are common to people with methylation dysfunction, like perfectionism, OCD-tendencies, anxiety, hyper-focus or hypo-focus, and others. These common traits emerge in each methylation archetype pattern in slightly different ways, and by using your personality to determine your methylation archetype, you can benefit by getting general guidelines about supplements and even prescription medications that might work for you. I have used the terms over methylator and undermethylation in the past to help categorize people to streamline their supplement start with MTHFR or other methylation imbalance, but the terms themselves can be confusing and misleading because they imply a biochemical state that isn't actually there. Logically, it makes sense that an undermethylator would be globally undermethylating things, but that doesn't bear out in reality, and part of that is because these terms (over- and under-methylator) were coined well before we had as much knowledge about the actual biochemistry and genetics linked to it as we do now. Categorizing people in this way does still have some uesful aspects because many of the traits we see in people with methylation imbalance that are used to determine over and under-methylators, still point to some predictable medication reactions, supplement guidelines and other useful information. So how do we keep the good without keeping the names? Tune in next episode because we'll be talking about a new way of looking at this. Methylation Archetypes. She breaks down the considerations for symptom management and potential risks, particularly regarding tumors and blood labs. In this episode of 'To Health With That,' naturopathic doctor Amy Neuzil discusses the complexities surrounding methylfolate dosing for individuals with MTHFR. High doses of methylfolate could come with some of the same risks as high-dose folic acid, so it's essential to find the right dose for you without overdoing it. The three factors to consider are symptom management, potential risks, and serum folate levels. She breaks down the considerations for symptom management, potential risks, particularly regarding tumors, and blood labs. Amy also shares her own methylfolate regime and emphasizes the importance of personalized care and listening to one’s body. 00:00 Introduction 00:31 Introduction to Folate Toxicity 01:25 Considerations for Methylfolate Dosing 01:56 Symptom Management 02:27 Risks of High Folate Doses 02:42 Blood Testing Guidelines 03:40 Personal Methylfolate Regime 05:34 Importance of Personalized Care
Folate is a great thing - it's vitamin B9 and your body needs it to make new cells, replicate DNA, and so much more. But there are risks of too much folate, so how much folic acid is too much? And how dangerous is it to take high dose folic acid over time? The research exists for high dose folic acid, but what about L-5MTHF, or methyl folate? Does high dose methyl folate have the same risks as high dose folic acid?
We have so many questions, and very few definitive answers, but there is lots of information that we do have.
This episode of the To Health With That! podcast will cover the risks of high dose folic acid, the risks of high dose methyl folate, the risks of high dose L-5MTHF, and what we do and don't know from the research.

The episode covers the concept of adrenal fatigue, identifying it in various phases, and introduces a holistic approach to healing the adrenals, emphasizing the role of supplements such as Vitamin C, Magnesium, B Vitamins, and melatonin, along with a special focus on adaptogens like Siberian ginseng, ashwagandha, and holy basil. Neuzil stresses the importance of incorporating these supplements alongside necessary lifestyle changes to prevent the eventual collapse of adrenal health. Additionally, fat-soluble antioxidants are highlighted as beneficial for individuals experiencing adrenal fatigue. The episode serves as a comprehensive guide to understanding and managing adrenal fatigue, but Neuzil reminds listeners to consult healthcare professionals before starting any medical regimen and acknowledges the recovery process is a slow, diligent journey akin to the duration of time taken to develop adrenal fatigue. In season four of the 'To Health With That' podcast, hosted by naturopathic doctor Amy Noozle, the focus shifts to understanding and combating fatigue, with a specific emphasis on adrenal fatigue. This episode discusses the importance of healing your adrenals from phase two (tired but wired) or phase three (burning down) without the immediate use of adrenal hormones or supplements, reserving such treatments for more severe cases. Doctor Neuzil emphasizes lifestyle changes as a crucial step towards adrenal recovery, advocating for consistent sleep schedules, reducing screen time before bed, ensuring exposure to bright light in the morning, and adjusting dietary habits to support adrenal health. The significance of mindset and doing less than one is capable of to avoid further stress on the adrenals is highlighted as the hardest yet most vital part of recovery. The episode promises to cover supplements in the following installment. Understanding and Addressing Adrenal Fatigue Adrenal fatigue is everywhere in modern culture, but why is that? It comes down to the difference between threats in our ancestral (geneticly adapted) cultures and threats in modern life. Dr. Amy explains the role of the adrenal glands, located like hats on the kidneys, in secreting hormones that regulate our stress response and circadian rhythms. She discusses how modern stressors, unlike ancestral dangers, continuously trigger our fight or flight response without the necessary physical release, leading to what is commonly referred to as adrenal fatigue. Symptoms range from overwhelming fatigue to more severe conditions like Addison's disease in extreme cases. The episode finishes with a mention of Debbie Moon's book, 'Histamine Life Hacks,' recommending it for further reading on histamine issues. Future episodes promise to explore the stages of adrenal fatigue, its impact on health, and potential recovery strategies. 00:00 - Intro 00:29 - Diving Deep into Adrenal Fatigue 01:00 - Understanding Your Adrenals: The Basics 03:25 - The Modern World vs. Our Adrenal Health 05:39 - Symptoms and Testing for Adrenal Fatigue 08:20 - A Quick Book Recommendation: Histamine Life Hacks 08:59 - Looking Ahead: Navigating Adrenal Fatigue Here's the amazong link (affiliate) for Histamine Lifehacks: https://amzn.to/3QtduV5 Thanks for watching this video! Doing a good detox protocol takes some preparation and some of the best preparation you can do is finding out if your genes are making detoxification harder for you somewhere. Some gene SNPs have the potential to make detox harder by interfering with phase two conjugation reactions. These include MTHFR, MTR, MTRR, GST, GPX, COMT, HNMT, UGT1A1, SULT genes, NAT1, and NAT2. With each category of gene SNP, I will also give suggestions for improving that aspect of your phase two detoxification reactions. 00:00 - Intro 00:49 - Why SNPs matter and how to test 02:08 - Genes that affect methylation and how to help 02:46 - Genes that affect glutathione and how to help 03:38 - Genes that affect sulfation and how to help 04:20 - Genes that affect glucuronidation and how to help 05:52 - Genetic Rockstars walkthrough 07:42 - Genes that affect acetylation and how to help 08:11 - Amino acid conjugation GENETIC ROCKSTARS (an MTHFR community): community.tohealthwiththat.com FREE COURSE: MTHFR Basics: https://to-health-with-that.teachable.com/p/mthfr-basics WORK WITH DR.
