The Key of Imagination is dedicated to Rod Serling's masterpiece: The Twilight Zone. But, our podcast will be a little different than other Twilight Zone shows you might have listened to. Research has shown that experiencing awe leads to fuller, more meaningful connections with humanity; it can help push back against depression; and it can improve one's sense of well-being. I've been using the Twilight Zone in my college classrooms for over 20 years for this very purpose. We're going to look for the awe in each episode. Join us, and see the Twilight Zone in a new way with me, Dr. Joe Meyer.

KOI: A Twilight Zone Show - The Whole Truth #50

Spoiler alert: this week we’re analyzing the Twilight Zone episode “The Whole Truth.” Harvey Hunnicut is as honest a salesman as you’ll find–that is if you happen to be standing on his car lot and looking directly at him. However, on this day, Harvey is going to be tasked with having to tell the truth: the whole truth. Will he ever be able to sell another car again? Maybe–or maybe not. The only thing that Harvey knows is that, in order to get the opportunity to make an honest living again, he’s going to have to be able to lie. In this episode, we talk about whether or not the car in question requires a certain slant to the truth; we try and figure out what Rod Serling wants us to learn through this episode about telling the truth; and I’ll reveal my moment of awe, a look at the truth behind mirror therapy at Temple University. So, grab your keys, and let’s open up this door to the fifth dimension.

KOI: A Twilight Zone Show - Back There #49

Spoiler alert: this week we’re analyzing the Twilight Zone episode “Back There.” Peter Corrigan, played by actor Russell Johnson, is about to find out the answer to a rather complex question: can a person go back in time and change the future? As Corrigan finds himself suddenly back in 1865 and trying to convince the people around him that President Abraham Lincoln is in grave danger, he begins to learn that the question is not so simple. In this Twilight Zone episode, we’re going to try and break down how this theory of time travel actually works; we’ll dive into whether or not someone can come back from time traveling psychologically the same as when they left; and I’ll reveal my moment of awe, a look into the mind of John Wilkes Booth through his own journal. So, grab your keys, and let’s open up this door to the fifth dimension. As always, spoiler alert. If you have note seen the episode, go check it out and then come back here for the analysis. KOI: A Twilight Zone Show - Dust #48

Spoiler alert: this week we’re analyzing the Twilight Zone episode “Dust.” Luis Gallegos sits in a jail cell, waiting to be executed. Why? A reckless night of desperation and inebriation led to the death of a young girl. And so, he waits. But, when a peddler of false hopes comes into town claiming that he has magic dust that can change hate to love, things start to become interesting. We’ll dive into the difference between vengeance and justice, and bring in the movies John Wick and Tombstone to help us out; we’ll talk about how our environments shape us into ways we might like and not like, with a bit of help from It’s a Wonderful Life; and I’ll reveal my moment of awe, or rather, a moment of awe from one of our characters. So, grab your keys, and let's unlock this door to the fifth dimension. As always, spoiler alert. If you have note seen the episode, go check it out and then come back here for the analysis. KOI: A Twilight Zone Show - The Night of the Meek #47

Spoiler alert: this week we’re analyzing the Twilight Zone episode “The Night of the Meek.” Henry Corwin, played by the great Art Carney, is a department store Santa with a big heart and a penchant for a bit of the drink. He loves children and the magic of Christmas, but more than anything, he just wishes that, for one Christmas, those who are in need of the most could be given the most. And when the Twilight Zone steps in, he realizes that he just might have been given his wish. In this episode, we’re going to try and reconcile the commercialization of the holidays with gift-giving; we’ll take a look at the relationship between substance abuse and the holiday season; and for my moment of awe, I’m going to bring in the man, the myth, the legend himself, Rod Serling, to talk about his favorite Christmas. So, grab your keys, and let's unlock this door to the fifth dimension. As always, spoiler alert. If you have note seen the episode, go check it out and then come back here for the analysis. This week we’re analyzing the Twilight Zone episode “A Most Unusual Camera.” We’re going to be looking at how the Dietrichs are seemingly unable to disentangle society from humanity; we’ll take a bit of a dive into the relationship between French history, Nostradamus, Catherine of Theot, and the origins of fixed photography; and I’ll reveal my moment of awe, a self-reflection on the moments when we might have been able to help others see the value of mankind. Oh, and I may or may not have a picture of Chuck Norris kicking a Pokémon through a department store sprinkled in here somewhere. KOI: A Twilight Zone Show - The Lateness of the Hour #44

This week we’re taking a look at the Twilight Zone episode “The Lateness of the Hour”. Jana, played by Inger Stevens, is growing more and more tired of living a life inside her parents’ home. Like most young adults, she wants to live, to experience life. However, her parents decided years ago to withdraw from society, from all of the violence and potential plagues. What is adding to Jana’s feeling of isolation is the knowledge that the servants are nothing more than clever robots. Oh, Dr. Loren, played by John Hoyte, has infused a kind of will within them, but it just isn’t the same. It’s time for Jana to put her foot down and give her parents an ultimatum: either the servants go or she does. Well, in true Twilight Zone fashion, it’s a bit more complicated than that. In this episode, we’ll inquire into why Dr. Loren built will into his robots; we’ll dive into the possibility of this arrangement becoming the norm in the future; and I’ll reveal my moment of awe, a look into the potential for personalities in our AI. So, grab your keys and let’s open up this door to the fifth dimension. As always, spoiler alert. If you have note seen the episode, go check it out and then come back here for the analysis. KOI: A Twilight Zone Show - Eye of the Beholder #42

This week, we’re taking a look at the Twilight Zone episode “Eye of the Beholder.” Janet Tyler lives in a world behind a set of bandages, ones that cover not merely her face, but her thoughts. This is her final visit, the last chance for doctors to fix her deformed face. If they are successful, she will be able to take her place with the rest of normal society; however, if her visage is unchanged, she will need to be removed–one way or another. You see, in this Twilight Zone reality, people need to look a certain way and conform to that way, else they are not allowed to co-exist with the rest of society. Oh, the State does allow for undesirables to live; they just can’t live with everyone else. They must be removed. By the end of the episode, it is clear that Rod Serling has something to say about how we so easily accept the State coming in to take control, and I have a bit to say about this as well. In this KOI episode, we’ll talk about why Serling uses “The State” as concept; we’ll dive into whether or not there is any hope for us to cling to at the end; and I’ll reveal my moment of awe, a bit of a plea for the importance of discomfort. So, grab your keys, and let’s open up this door to the fifth dimension. As always, spoiler alert. If you have note seen the episode, go check it out and then come back here for the analysis. KOI: A Twilight Zone Show - The Howling Man - #41

We're taking a look at one of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes this week: "The Howling Man." It's the story of David Ellington, played by H.M. Wynant. A man on a backpacking trip through Europe, gets caught in a bad storm. He finds an old castle being run by an order of monks, but something is not right. Rather than help David, they want him to leave. And there is a strange sound ringing throughout the halls of the castle, a howling. When David learns that there is a man being held captive in the castle, he tries to confront the head of the order, Brother Jerome, played by John Carradine. What happens next is something that David will never forget. We'll talk about why David is so easily tricked; we'll discuss why he feels so comfortable trusting the maid at the end; and I'll reveal my moment of awe, one that is roughly 20 years in the making. So, grab your keys, and let's unlock this door to the fifth dimension. As always, spoiler alert. If you have note seen the episode, go check it out and then come back here for the analysis. Updates and Changes Coming to KOI - A Twilight Zone Show

I've got a quick message and update regarding the KOI show. There won't be an episode this week, but I'm building a special kind of desk to help me be more consistent in my delivery of the content. When we come back, I'll have a new look to our Twilight Zone analysis show, and we'll be diving into "The Howling Man," one of absolute favorite episodes. (If you've seen my show, you probably already knew that from my desk.)Discord: discord.gg/QjNY9jcyFZX Handle: x.com/keyofishowYouTube Channel:    / @thekeyofimagination  Head over to thekeyofimagination.com to learn more about me, check out my Twilight Zone trinkets and collectibles, and to to continue the conversation. No show did a better job than The Twilight Zone at generating awe and wonder within its audience. It just so happens that awe is exactly what we need in these difficult, divisive times. So, join me, Joe Meyer, and let's walk through the fifth dimension with Rod Serling. Along the way, we'll discuss big questions and relate them back to our Twilight Zone episodes.Opening and Ending theme: by Jacob Williams @jakeproduces on Fiverr#twilightzone #rodserling #scifi #zone #outerlimits #sciencefiction

KOI: A Twilight Zone Show - A Thing about Machines #40

For this week’s Twilight Zone episode, we’re taking a look at “A Thing About Machines.” Bartlett Finchley is a man with refined cultural tastes, especially when it comes to flairs of the verbal kind. However, when machines are involved, he just can’t seem to find the words to express just how much he despises them. And, truth be told, they hate him right back. But, how does one fight the inevitable onslaught of technological advancement? If you have the answer, you might just let Finchley know–although his phone is currently out of service. As we walk through “A Thing about Machines,” we’re going to be diving into whether or not the machines are actually worse than Finchley himself; we’ll talk about how the relationship between humans and technology might be evolving in the future (and it’s not what you think); finally, I’ll reveal my moment of awe, just some musings on why we can’t always see each other in the best of lights when we need it most. So, grab your keys, and let's unlock this door to the fifth dimension. As always, spoiler alert. If you have note seen the episode, go check it out and then come back here for the analysis. We're walking through Rod Serling's class Twilight Zone series and asking difficult questions about life. So, if you love The Twilight Zone, science fiction, or even just philosophizing about life, consider joining us on this journey. There's always room for more. KOI: A Twilight Zone Show - Nervous Man in a Four Dollar Room #39

This week, we're taking a look at the Twilight Zone episode "Nervous Man in a Four Dollar Room." For Jackie Rhoades, nothing comes easy. Ever since he was a young boy, he has had to prove himself. However, instead of these difficult moments fashioning him into a strong, independent person, it has simply reduced him to a lacky--an individual who only finds purpose through someone else's eyes. In this case, that someone else just happens to be a no-good criminal by the name of George. In this KOI episode, we're going to dive deeper into the psychology behind the man in the mirror; we'll try and uncover how George is able to keep Jackie under his thumb; and I'll reveal my moment of awe, a personal story about my own run-in with some bullies. So, grab your keys, and let's unlock this door to the fifth dimension. As always, spoiler alert. If you have not seen the episode, go check it out and then come back here for the analysis. KOI: A Twilight Zone Show - The Man in the Bottle #38

This week, we’re going to be looking at the Twilight Zone episode “The Man in the Bottle.” Arthur and Edna Castle own a respectable antique shop; however, business has not been booming, so when they are suddenly face-to-face with the opportunity to put in a few wishes, we can certainly understand why they give it a go. However, as is sometimes the case in life, things do not seem go as planned. As the old saying goes: be careful what you wish for; you might end up with a funny little mustache. Okay, that last part might not be part of the usual saying, but it is a part of the Twilight Zone. In this episode of KOI, we’re going to take a close look at our magical friend and see if he is truly playing it straight with the Castles; we’ll take a look at what Arthur seems to really desire; and I’ll reveal my moment of awe, which I hope will make you laugh, or at least think about laughing some more. So, grab your keys, and let's unlock this door to the fifth dimension. As always, spoiler alert. If you have note seen the episode, go check it out and then come back here for the analysis. KOI: A Twilight Zone Show - King Nine Will Not Return #37

This week, we're discussing the Twilight Zone episode "King Nine Will Not Return." Captain James Embry is waking up into a nightmare--face down in the African sands, B-52 bomber crashed in front of him, and no sign of his crew. All that is left to do is try and figure out exactly what happened here. For Jame Embry, played by actor Bob Cummings, this is going to be a tale directly out of both the Twilight Zone and Sherlock Holmes. In our analysis, we'll talk about whether or not understanding deductive and inductive reasoning would have helped Captain Embry; we'll get a bit speculative about time and space; and I'll reveal my moment of awe, which has to do with how our brains tend to fill in the gaps of particularly traumatic events. So, grab your keys, and let's unlock this door to the fifth dimension. As always, spoiler alert. If you have note seen the episode, go check it out and then come back here for the analysis. KOI: A Twilight Zone Show - A World of His Own #36

This week, we’re taking a look at the Twilight Zone episode “A World of His Own.” His name…is Joe; he wears glasses that probably should have been replaced years ago; he loves comfortable sweaters; and lives for talking about The Twilight Zone. Okay, I may not be able to make the people I talk about come to life, but I’d like to think I bring a little fun and interest to all of you out there. Greg, on the other hand, well, he can truly do wonders with a dictaphone. But, when his wife Victoria finds him in the arms of another woman, he finds himself in a peculiar situation of trying to explain how the other woman doesn’t really exist. As you’ll see in this KOI episode, I’m not buying it, and neither is Victoria. In this Twilight Zone episode, we ask the question, is there something about Mary; we banter of whether or not Gregory can/should be considered a kind of god–even above Rod Serling himself; and I reveal my moment of awe, a look at the future of build-a-spouse AI and robotics. So, grab your keys, and let's unlock this door to the fifth dimension. As always, spoiler alert. If you have not seen the episode, go check it out and then come back here for the analysis. This week, we're looking at the Twilight Zone episode "The Mighty Casey". For baseball manager McGarry, played by Jack Warden, things can only get better from here--mostly because they can't possibly get worse. But, when Casey shows up for a tryout, it sparks some hope for the Hoboken Zephyrs. The one problem: Casey is not exactly what he seems. In this KOI episode, we're going to discuss whether or not Casey is the future of sports; we'll dive into some of the differences between machine logic and human logic;and I'll reveal my moment of awe, which has to do with a certain NY baseball club that was making the sports world say, "oh, my god." The Key of Imagination: A Twilight Zone show with Joe Meyer
Joe Meyer.
