Whether it’s writing hundreds of articles for websites like T-Nation…

And today we’re going to take a deep dive into helping YOU optimize your training!

Quotable Quotes:
The key ticket to you being successful as a coach is your clients and your athletes being healthy
—–
If you can create content that helps 80% of people, 80% of the time, you’re absolutely killing it out there
—–
We are the summation of all of our life’s experiences and our careers experiences

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

* The importance of maintaining health and longevity in fitness training.

* How John’s personal approach to fitness has evolved over the years (i.e. how he still stays in phenomenal shape!)
* A really important question: Can you train every day without crushing yourself? Or burning yourself out?
* Why every coach should value continuous learning, and why we MUST adapt our training methods over time.
* And last but not least, should men actually train more like women?!?!?!

Ken Vick on Extensive Pogos, Deep Tier Plyos and Building Real Eccentric Strength

Today – my friend – we’re going to touch on ALL the hot button topics.
For instance, are we potentially missing the mark with our eccentric-focused training?
Putting an over-emphasis on extensive jump training?
Or maybe, just trying to figure out where the heck do deep tier plyos fit into the equation?
Ken Vick is the President and Global High-Performance Director of Velocity Sports Performance, and someone I know is ALWAYS thinking about training and how to optimize it.
And in today’s episode we’ll cover all those topics – and so many more!

Quotable Quotes:
Eccentric actions in sport are the most important in my view. They can give an athlete an advantage or they can cause damage
—–
You just put a huge engine in without any brakes. If you’re not training through eccentric actions, you’re missing the brakes
—–
Watch sports looking at it as a movement specialist. What are the movement patterns and what are the muscle actions that go along with that?

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

* Ken’s journey from Olympic weightlifting and track coach to high-performance director.
* The Shocks/Springs model, and how they relate to human movement.
* Are slow, controlled eccentric exercises with light weights giving us the training adaptations we want?
* The value of understanding the force/velocity curve – and never getting too caught up on one side of it!
* How Ken uses medicine balls in his training programs.
* Why it’s so important to watch sports as a movement specialist – and not as a casual fan of the game!
* What role should isometrics play in training? And especially with regards to tendon loading programs?
* Ken’s thoughts on both extensive pogos and deep-tier plyos, including where they might fit into your program.
* Final thoughts on building frameworks, systems, and why every coach should work with (or at least watch!) sports they don’t coach.

Dr. Jim Stoppani on Pre-Workouts, Creatine for Cognition, and Navigating the World of Supplements

Supplements are such a hot topic these days, I just had to do another show on them.
For instance, many of us need a little pick-me-up before we train – but are the pre-workout mixes on the market any good?
Creatine is obviously a hot topic as well, especially with regards to muscle building and now cognition.
But how much do you REALLY need to take to see the benefits?
And last but not least GLP-1’s are all the rage in the weight loss community. But are they something YOU should be considering?
Well luckily for us, we’ve got a world-renowned expert to help us answer these questions!
Dr. Jim Stoppani is a Yale-educated PhD who has devoted his life to studying exercise, nutrition, and supplements.
And in this episode, we’re going to take a deep dive into the world of supplements!

Quotable Quotes:
I’m a firm believer in creatine enhancing your cognitive performance as well as the muscle performance
—–
If you’re not used to caffeine and you take a 500 mg dose, it’s going to ruin your day.
—–
You should be expecting something that’s going to enhance your performance, not how you feel

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

* Dr. Jim Stoppani’s background in exercise physiology, strength training, and how he got started working for Weider Publications
* Why he’s so obsessed with understanding strength training and bodybuilding all the way down to the molecular level
* Pre-workout supplements: What should you be looking for? And what should you avoid?
* His thoughts on creatine for both building muscle AND cognitive performance.
* How he feels like programming should evolve as you age, and some insights into what he does with his own workouts
* GLP-1’s – are they worth all the hype? And should we change our viewpoint on the role they play in weight loss and long-term health?
* Why social media is so hard to navigate, and his thoughts on finding credible fitness information amongst all the noise

And today, we’re going to take a deep dive into supplements, and what YOU should consider taking – as well as what you NEED to save your money on!

Quotable Quotes:
Supplements are supplemental to your diet. It’s quite literally in the name, in case you ever forget.

10 Years of Lessons About Training, Podcasting and Life (Episode 500!)

500 episodes…can you believe it?!?!?
I certainly can’t – especially when my goal initially was to get to 50, or maybe 100 shows!
And while that definitely sounds cool, I’ve got to admit – I wasn’t sure what to do with this episode.
So instead of doing a standard interview, we’re going to take a little trip down memory lane.
We’ll talk about the humble beginnings of the show, how it’s evolved over the years, and then finish off with a couple of key life lessons I’ve learned over the past 10 years since the show began.
So without any further ado, let’s do this!

Find ways to try and bake consistency into your life. If it’s meaningful, if it’s gonna move the needle in your life or in your business, find ways to be consistent in your approach

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

* How the Physical Prep Podcast came to be (and the podcast I actually had BEFORE it!)
* Random stats, and while 2.5+ million downloads is cool, the stats I’m actually MOST proud of
* My Top 10 downloaded shows of all time – and links to all of them below
* A massive shout out to the sponsors that have helped support the show over the years
* Why it’s so critical to set boundaries and expectations in your life – especially if you’re a people pleaser!
* My two rules or “filters” for people I’m considering working with…
* The 3 step approach you need to see REAL success

7 Ways to Write Better Training Programs Today

If you’re looking to write better training programs, you’re going to LOVE this week’s episode!

Here, my goal is to not only give you long-term food for thought, but also practical, real-world tips that will help you write better programs starting today.

From my thoughts on training the basics, to making programs more streamlined and congruent, I know everyone who listens is going to take something away from this episode.

So without any further ado, let’s dive in and talk program design!

Quotable Quotes:

To write a better program, you must strike a balance between what your clients want and what they need. It’s about ensuring they stay engaged and motivated while also achieving their fitness goals. This balance is crucial for long-term success and satisfaction.

Agility in program design is key. Not every client will be at their best physically, mentally, or emotionally every day. Your programs should be flexible enough to adapt to these variations, ensuring that progress continues even on challenging days.

Realistic timelines are essential for achieving fitness goals. While the goals themselves may be ambitious, aligning them with a feasible timeline prevents burnout and ensures sustainable progress. It’s about setting expectations that lead to long-term success.

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

* Why you MUST find a balance between THEIR wants and YOUR needs.

* Thinking ahead and strategizing for injured or return to play clients/athletes.

* Thoughts on timelines, and keeping people honest about their goals.

* Why you MUST think about what’s going on at the gym when you write a program.

* My stance on “the basics,” and why hot shot IG and TikTok influencers (generally) aren’t great coaches.

* One of the best compliments I’ve ever gotten from an online client…and the advice you can take away from it.

* You can absolutely be fast, fit, strong, and jacked – but why you can’t BUILD all of these qualities in one program (and what to do instead).

Courtney Delks on Clarity, Intentionality, and Building a Winning Mindset

Here are a few interesting questions to ask yourself…

* How do the stories you were told during childhood impact you as an adult?
* How do “unconfident” athletes shift their mindset to unlock their true potential?
* And how can activities like journaling or simply being still help you gain clarity in your life?

Well if any of these sound of interest to you, you’re going to love today’s episode with Courtney Delks!
Courtney is a former Indiana Miss Basketball and Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year. And after her high school career, she went on to star at Purdue for 4 years.
Since 2015, Courtney and her husband Jordan own Compete Training Academy, where they help athletes take their game AND their mindset to the next level.
And in this episode we’re going to take a deep dive into mindset, and how you can improve either yours or that of the athletes you work with!

Quotable Quotes:
Clarity is the number one. If you don’t have clarity on who you want to be, where you’re going, you’re just existing
—–

Confidence is a skill that we can develop. It’s not something you’re born with.
—–

Journaling is like running the dishwasher. It’s like brushing your teeth. You gotta focus on getting out the bad and celebrating the good.
—–

You have to start saying no and taking things away to become who you want to be.

We all have something we struggle with, and the stories we tell ourselves are so powerful.

The Young Athlete Development Manifesto

I’ve gotta be honest…I’m frustrated with the current state of coaching.
It seems like nowadays, everybody wants the easy way out.
Just grab the biggest or strongest kid (or team), and off you go.
But what happened to actually developing young athletes from the ground up?
What happened to taking that absolute dog that loves to be in the gym, and making them the most savage athlete they can be?
Well if this sounds at all interesting to you, you’re going to love today’s episode!

Quotable Quotes:
We’re missing so many talented individuals that are late bloomers because we’re not continuing to develop these kids over the long-haul.
—–
Our goal as a coach is to fill in these movement gaps… The more well-rounded and athletic we can make them, the better off they’re gonna be.
—–
It’s not just about force production. It’s not about having the best power lifters. But you have to respect the fact that strength and force production ARE valuable

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

* The importance of developing well-rounded athletes, rather than just picking the biggest or strongest kids at a young age.
* The “plug and play” mentality prevalent in sports, and how it’s trickling from the top-down.
* How I structure and lay out a training program for a pro vs. a young, developing athlete.
* Why movement variability is so important, and the Bell Curve analogy I use for mobility.
* How to program resets that young athlete will actually do!
* My thoughts on movement competency in the weight room, and why we shouldn’t just be training bilateral, symmetrical lifts.
* Why we shouldn’t be building powerlifters, but still need to respect the benefits of increasing force production.
* Rhythm and coordination – why are they valuable? And how you can train them?
* Why athletes from “specific” sports should train non-specific movements to diversify their movement library.
* How our ultimate job is to build the most savage, well-rounded athletes we possibly can!

Okay serious question…with athletes playing more games than ever before, how do you find ways to “sneak” strength workouts into their routine?

Gareth Sapstead on Stubborn Body Parts, Incremental Progress, and Elite Physique Transformation

Even though I grew up following bodybuilding routines from Flex and Muscle and Fitness, I’ll admit – I don’t know a ton about physique-focused sports.
But as I was doing research for today’s show, a few questions started to come up…
For starters, what are the biggest differences between someone who wants to get photo shoot ready, and someone who’s just looking to shed 10 or 20 pounds?
How do you manage people that want to train 4, 5, or even 6 or more days per week?
And what are some of the biggest mistakes people make to change their bodies for the better?
Well luckily for you, today’s guest can answer all these questions – and a ton more!
Gareth Sapstead is a Coach specializing in physique transformation, a multiple times published author, and has been featured in numerous major fitness outlets. He’s the owner of EPT Coaching Online, and EPT Lab fitness – a performance focused gym based in the U.K.
And today, we’re going to talk about what it really takes to transform your body!

Quotable Quotes:
The thing that I specialize in really is transformation, but what I do differently is I apply those strength and conditioning principles over to those transformation clients.
——-
The process is always the same – it’s just how we scale things based on where they’re at right now.
——-
If you’re someone that is not on any plan, the best thing you can do is open up a book, grab any book, and just do that workout. Chances are you’ll probably see some kind of change just by sticking to that one program.

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

* Gareth’s background, and how he got into the physique transformation game.
* How he uses S&C principles and then applies them to physique training.
* His assessment process, and how he uses that to drive future training.
* Why training should be goal-focused, yet adaptable to the person standing in front of you.
* Gareth’s thoughts on client psychology, and how that can impact training frequency.
* How to manage client expectations, and help them focus on long-term success.
* Why exercise selection should prioritize effectiveness over tradition.
* His thoughts on specialty bars, where they fit into his programs, and why they’re such a powerful tool to have in your toolbox.
* The power of simply having a plan.
* Plus a bunch of random topics including financial planning for fitness pros, his upcoming book launch, and how he got dubbed “The Fitness Maverick.”

Jarred Boyd on Adaptive Intent, Mental Models, and Building Elite Basketball Players

Why is strength important for basketball players? And are the ways we currently evaluate strength relevant to the sport?
As a coach or clinician, how do you toe that line between optimizing and improving movement, while still getting REAL training adaptations?
And what’s the difference between kinetic and regional interdependence, and why should you care?
Well if you’re curious about any of these topics, you’re going to LOVE today’s episode.
Jarred Boyd is a doctor of physical therapy and is currently the Director of Rehabilitation for the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA.
And in this episode, we’re going to talk about optimizing movement, getting strong, and keeping your hoopers healthy!

Quotable Quotes:
The demands (of basketball) are going to be highly predicated on the ability to maintain the pace.
We have to put on our clinical thinking or Sherlock Holmes hat, and ask, “what do we double click on and focus on?”
Strength is this higher order construct. There’s many iterations of strength, just like there are many different pasta dishes.

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

* Jarred’s background and journey into the NBA.
* Starting from the ground up, what Jarred would do to develop an ELITE basketball player physically.
* The needs and demands of the modern NBA.
* How valuable is strength? And what are some of the best ways to evaluate it?
* Neurology vs. biology in strength, and why some may be more important than others at the elite level.
* The role of isolation and/or machine-based exercises in programs (and how I’ve come full-circle on this thanks to guys like Jarred!)
* Finding the balance between “movement optimization” while still training and developing neuromuscular adaptations.
* The difference between kinetic and regional interdependence, and why one is potentially more valuable than the other.
* Jarred’s advice to young fitness pros, and why content creation has been such a valuable outlet for him as a practitioner and coach.

Confidence in Coaching, Continuing Education, and Business Optimization

Hey friend!
We’re going to try something new today, with a pot luck episode that’s one part Q&A mixed with some of our usual solo episode flair.
Because whether it was online mentees, observers who have come into the gym, our team of independent contractors or people coming in to attend the Lee Taft seminar, I’ve had A LOT of the same conversations lately.
People want to know how to run their business more effectively.
How to get out of their own heads and coach more effectively.
Or they just want to know…would I ever take an intern again?
Well this episode has a little something for everyone, so let’s dive in!

Quotable Quotes:

People crave simplicity. They don’t want fancy – they want a system that’s intuitive and user-friendly.

If you’re a serious coach, you have to get off social media and go to somebody else’s gym and watch them coach.

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

* If you want scalability, why you MUST lock in your scheduling and billing processes.
* What should you do if you end up giving a “private” workout in a group session?
* Struggling with your coaching confidence? Here’s what I’d do if I were you…
* The 1% better principle, and why every coach north of 10 years should be adhering to it.
* Would I consider taking another intern? Maybe…but here’s what they CAN’T do
* Reflections on my Strong for Life Masterclass, and why they’re mutually beneficial for me and you.

Cam Josse on Alternative Ways to Build Speed, Strength and Power in Football Players

If you came up in a Division 1 S&C setting, chances are you spent at least some time around football.
At Ball State, we have a team of 4-5 coaches who all worked with different sports – baseball, basketball, soccer, gymnastics, volleyball, you name it – but when football came in, it was all hands on deck.
And here’s the thing – football has arguably the strongest S&C culture of all the sports, but does that mean we should be dogmatic about how we think about S&C for the actual sport?
Does that mean we can’t evolve?
Or get better at how we prepare our athletes for sport?
I don’t think so…and I feel like today’s guest would agree!
Cam Josse is currently working with the Detroit Lions as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning coach. Prior to joining the lions he worked at Auburn, IU and DeFranco’s Strength.
And today, we’re going to challenge a lot of the old-school thoughts when it comes to football strength and conditioning!

Everything you do is just a fractal piece of organization of the entire system. So if you’re not ultimately training for what you do as an athlete, then your training could potentially be misguided.
– Cam Josse

This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast:

* Cam gives a little insight into his career path and his various stops along the way.
* Why program design should start with the game you play and work backwards.
* The bandwidths of speed training, and some thoughts on “how much is enough.”
* Why speed training will vary greatly between athletes, as well as between positions on the football field.
* Thoughts on power training, and why we may need to look back 40-50 years to find some “new” answers.
* How Cam’s strength programming has evolved, and how he tailors workouts to individual athletes.
* Do you REALLY need heavy strength training in your program? (This question and though alone is worth the price of admission.)
* Thoughts on “touching” intensity, balanced with keeping athletes healthy.
* Is it about 1-2 all out efforts? Or being able to hit those efforts repeatedly?
* How the integration of various training methods can enhance overall athletic performance.
