Financial Advisor vs. Accountant vs. Money Coach: Who Does What (and Who You Actually Need)

🎙️ The Money Confident Podcast with Jillian Todd Episode 06:

Financial Advisor vs. Accountant vs. Money Coach: Who Does What (and Who You Actually Need)

There are a lot of money pros out there — and just as many buzzwords. Whether someone’s throwing around “CPA,” “tax advisor,” or “bookkeeper,” it can be hard to know who does what, who you need in your corner, and what questions to ask when hiring help.

In this episode, Jillian breaks down the different financial roles creative business owners might work with — and how to know which one is right for your stage of business.

In this episode, Jillian walks you through:

  • What financial advisors actually do, and why it’s okay if you don’t need one yet

  • How accountants, bookkeepers, and CPAs differ (and overlap)

  • Why it’s essential to ask exactly what a CPA will and won’t do

  • What tax accountants vs. tax advisors do and how to avoid year-end tax surprises

  • What a money coach (like Jillian!) helps with — and why she’s not categorizing your transactions or managing your investments 😉

You’ll leave this episode with a clear understanding of each financial role, plus how to confidently advocate for yourself when hiring someone to support you and your business.

💡 Favorite reminder from this episode:

“Not all CPAs do the same thing. Ask questions. Get clear on what they actually do — and don’t do.”

“I’d Rather Be Designing…” — A Client Story with Cass

🎙️ The Money Confident Podcast with Jillian Todd Episode 03: “I’d Rather Be Designing…” — A Client Story with Cass

In this powerful client interview, Jillian sits down with Cass, an interior designer who went from avoiding her numbers to confidently replacing her full-time salary — and making the leap to self-employment — all within six months of working together.

If you’ve ever told yourself you’d look at the numbers later, this episode is proof of what’s possible when you stop avoiding your finances and start taking aligned action with support.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

  • How Cass went from financial avoidance to full-on Money Confident

  • Why accountability (with a side of gentle nudging) was key to her growth

  • How building and using a simple spreadsheet helped her make informed business decisions

  • What finally gave her the courage to leave her 9-5 job and go full-time in her business

  • Her real advice for other creatives thinking about investing in coaching

Cass shares honestly about what held her back, what helped her shift, and how coaching helped her finally feel safe looking at the numbers. (Spoiler alert: It’s not just about spreadsheets — it’s about empowerment.)

✨ What Cass said:

“It gives me confidence and safety to actually know the numbers. I can make better decisions when I know my numbers — and that’s changed everything.”

There's Always a New B*tch — Why Now Is the Right Time to Focus on Your Money

🎙️ The Money Confident Podcast with Jillian Todd Episode 02: There's Always a New B*tch — Why Now Is the Right Time to Focus on Your Money

If you’ve been waiting for “the right time” to tackle your money… spoiler alert: it’s right now. In this honest, heartfelt, and hilarious episode, Jillian shares two stories — one from the food court at UGA and one from her hot girl summer — to lovingly call out one of the most common mindset blocks creative entrepreneurs face: “I’ll deal with my money when things slow down.”

Whether you're pushing off looking at your numbers, hesitant to make a change, or just generally feeling overwhelmed, this episode is the permission slip (and reality check) you need.

In this episode, Jillian unpacks:

  • Why your life will never be completely calm — and why that’s okay

  • Her iconic college quote: “There’s always a new b*tch” and how it applies to your finances 🫣

  • What her post-breakup dating season taught her about self-sabotage, clarity, and decision-making

  • Why committing to yourself (and your money) is often way easier than you think

  • The financial (and emotional) benefits of facing your numbers with confidence — including sleeping better, paying yourself more, and not crying at your desk come April

✨ Upcoming Free Workshop: Money Confident Creative: 3 Steps to Pay Yourself More Without Earning More 🗓️ September 25th at 12 PM ET A free, live class where Jillian walks you through exactly how to pay yourself more (without raising your prices or launching something new). Maybe You Should Save Less (Yep, Really)

🎙️ The Money Confident Podcast with Jillian Todd Episode 04: Maybe You Should Save Less (Yep, Really)

This one’s a spicy take. If you’ve been stashing money away, hoarding cash in a savings account “just in case,” or telling yourself you’re not ready to invest or spend until you’ve saved more… Jillian’s here to lovingly call you in.

In this episode, she shares why over-saving (yes, even with good intentions) might be keeping you from the next level of success in your business — and what to do instead.

Inside this episode, Jillian unpacks:

  • The difference between responsible saving and fear-based hoarding

  • Why having 20 months of expenses in your account isn’t actually helpful

  • The problem with “I just don’t trust myself with money yet”

  • How understanding your cash flow, tax strategy, and investment options will actually make you more money

  • Why faith in yourself (and your ability to pivot) is more valuable than a bloated savings account

You’ll also hear how building financial clarity and trust in your numbers helps you release money anxiety, make smarter business decisions, and pay yourself more.

They talk about why this happened, and what about the course allowed them to flourish financially. Without further ado, I will let them do the talking... Listen up! Welcome to Money Confident Season 2!

Welcome back to a New Year and a new season of Money Confidence!  I am so excited to be back with new and improved content for you guys, and I can't wait to hear what y'all think. For this season, I want to focus more on small business creatives and "remarrying" business and personal finance. They are so deeply intertwined, and I want to spend less time separating them and more time speaking on both and how they are connected. There will also be less interviews and more solo episodes so I can ensure you get the best, most valuable content. Often times, when people make New Years resolutions, they try to do too much at once. It can be exciting to start fresh, but it is important to focus on the things your are passionate about and build momentum toward those changes you want to make. When you inevitably hit a roadblock, that vision and passion will keep you going. Have compassion and grace for yourself, and get pumped! Also, I have a new virtual CFO offer for creative business owners who want to grow and scale their business even more, so check that out!

Episode 34: Are you a Money Hoarder?

Opposite of last week's episode about spenders, today we’re digging into the Savers!

I say this all the time, but as humans we love to be all or nothing. Totally in or out, up or down, spenders or savers… but the truth is that neither of these extremes are helpful.

The saver likes to save money, has tight financial goals, and tends to consider luxuries frivolous. Savers love feeling in control of their finances, and may be considered cheap or tight-fisted. While others may see money as a means to buy nice things, savers see it as a means to obtain security.

If you find yourself on the saver end of that spectrum - today’s episode is for you!

I’m covering how to know you’re a spender (or if it's crossed over into hoarding), plus some helpful mindset shifts and strategies to help you break free of those tendencies.

Episode 32: Are you a Spender?

Did y’all know I used to be a MAJOR overspender?

Is that shocking for someone who teaches money management for a living?

Maybe! But it's also my truth.

I used to have a HUGE issue with spending above my means. I loved treating myself and others, often to a fault. I would max out credit cards and even overdraft my account,

all for the thrill of feeling validated.

Maybe you can relate...

On today’s podcast, I’m sharing how I overcame my own spender tendencies as well as some tips on how you can do the same!
