Israel's Day in Court: Genocide Accusations and the Battle of Narratives

In this episode of the Media Mind, Dr. Tarek Cherkaoui hosts Mohamad H. Elmasry, Professor of Media Studies at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies. Professor Elmasry discusses how South Africa presented a solid case to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Irrespective of the outcome, bringing Israel to the court for "the crime of crimes" is a moral boost for Palestinians. Nevertheless, Professor Elmasry criticised the biased media coverage in the Global North despite the severity of the war crimes and the high number of journalists killed. He explains that Israel is slowly losing global support, and in the long term, the US and Israel are going to face the grim reality that the conflict dynamics have changed.

Dr. Mohamad H. Elmasry is a Professor of Media Studies at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies. He received his PhD in Mass Communication from the University of Iowa as a Presidential Fellow. His research on Arab media systems, news coverage of race, and the media and terrorism has appeared in reputable refereed publications, including Journalism, Journalism Practice, Journalism Studies, and the International Journal of Communication. He has also written for Al-Jazeera English, the Middle East Eye, The New Arab, Muftah, and Jadaliyya and appeared as an analyst on Al-Jazeera, CNN, BBC World News, and other networks.

The Israel Palestine Conflict: The Power of Narratives and the Quest for Justice

In this episode of the Media Mind, Dr. Tarek Cherkaoui hosts Sami Hamdi, Managing Director at the International Interest. Sami Hamdi discusses how a war of narratives shapes the perception of the Israel and Palestine conflict. He explains that for a long time, the Israeli point of view dominated the policy scene and the media. He also demonstrates that the Western media has neglected the root causes of the conflict leading up to October 7.

But the tide is shifting. As Hamdi explains, social media broke the grip on the dominant narrative. Pro-Palestinian voices are more prominent this time around. They have taken their arguments to social media, revealing to the world the plight of the Palestinians and the multiple exactions committed by the Apartheid regime of Israel.

Hamdi also highlighted that the sole benefactor of the protraction and expansion of the conflict is Netanyahu, who cares more about this political future than any other factor.

Finally, Sami Hamdi's call of action is to reframe the narratives pertaining to the conflict in a way closer to justice.

Sami Hamdi is the Managing Director of the International Interest, a global risk and intelligence company. He advises governments on the geopolitical dynamics of Europe and the MENA region. He also has significant expertise in advising companies on commercial issues related to volatile political environments and their implications on market entry, market expansion, and managing stakeholders.

Worthy and Unworthy Victims

After Russia’s attack on Ukraine, the plight of Ukrainian civilians has attracted the world’s sympathy. The debate surrounding Ukrainian refugees in Europe has been very positive. This situation contrasts with the media and political discourse towards other refugees from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc., which was entirely different. In this episode of media mind, Dr. Tarek Cherkaoui hosts Professor Hatem Bazian, who will talk about the discrepancies in modes of representation and the double standards behind the Western mainstream media portrayal of worthy victims (such as in Ukraine) and unworthy victims. This episode will unpack some of the underlying factors behind media bias and political misrepresentation that became so blatant in recent times.

Who is Eric Zemmour?

For years, Eric Zemmour, a far-right TV pundit, saturated the airwaves in France with his acerbic anti-immigrant and anti-Islam discourse. On November 30th, he announced his bid for the 2022 French presidential elections, hoping to outsmart the other main far-right party led by Marine Le Pen and outmanoeuvre incumbent President Emmanuel Macron. Local and international political and financial forces support Zemmour's bid, which is also significantly amplified by some broadcasters like C-News and social media algorithms. In this episode of Media Mind, Dr. Tarek Cherkaoui hosts Rim-Sarah Alouane to focus on Zemmour's political trajectory and explore what lies beneath his toxic rhetoric and potential end game.
