Worthy and Unworthy Victims

After Russia’s attack on Ukraine, the plight of Ukrainian civilians has attracted the world’s sympathy. The debate surrounding Ukrainian refugees in Europe has been very positive. This situation contrasts with the media and political discourse towards other refugees from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc., which was entirely different. In this episode of media mind, Dr. Tarek Cherkaoui hosts Professor Hatem Bazian, who will talk about the discrepancies in modes of representation and the double standards behind the Western mainstream media portrayal of worthy victims (such as in Ukraine) and unworthy victims. This episode will unpack some of the underlying factors behind media bias and political misrepresentation that became so blatant in recent times.
