Dr. Veronica Gillispie-Bell is a Board-Certified Obstetrician & Gynecologist and an Associate Professor at Ochsner Health in New Orleans, Louisiana. She is the Senior Site Lead and Section Head of Women’s Services at Ochsner Kenner, the Director of Quality for Women’s Services across the Ochsner Health System, and the Medical Director of the Minimally Invasive Center for the Treatment of Uterine Fibroids. Dr. Gillispie-Bell earned her medical degree from Meharry Medical College, completed her residency at Ochsner Health, and holds a Master of Applied Science in Patient Safety and Healthcare Quality from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She also holds certification in Diversity and Inclusion from Cornell University. Known nationally for her expertise in managing heavy menstrual bleeding due to fibroids, she is highly skilled in advanced laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgeries in addition to her obstetric care.
As Medical Director of the Louisiana Perinatal Quality Collaborative and the Pregnancy Associated Mortality Review for the Louisiana Department of Health, Dr. Gillispie-Bell is a leading force in addressing maternal health disparities. Her work focuses on improving birth outcomes and eliminating racial disparities in maternal health across Louisiana. Dr. Gillispie Bell has testified before Congress, led congressional briefings, and was an invited speaker at The White House Maternal Health Day of Action, advocating for policy improvements in maternal care and outcomes.
Dr. Gillispie-Bell has held numerous leadership roles on both local and national platforms, and her clinical and advocacy work has earned her wide recognition. She has been quoted in national outlets such as USA Today and The New York Times. She has appeared as a featured speaker at the Essence Festival, on Good Morning America, CNBC, Scripps News, and the 1619 Project Docuseries.

Dr. Tamisha J. Ponder is an entrepreneur, wife, mother, community-cultivator, and yogi. Holding degrees in history, sociology, journalism, and women's and gender studies, Tamisha completed her Ph.D. in Language, Literacy, and Culture researching Black women's activism and its emotional and psychological implications. Working for over a decade in higher education as an equity director and professor, Tamisha trained educators around the country to be culturally responsive and worked to promote social justice, equity, and inclusion in educational systems, non-profit sectors, and in the yoga community. Birthing Ourselves Anew: Transitions, Intuition & the Power of Community

In 2020, Keshara began her journey of studying herbalism to support herself and her community through healing with plant medicine. She currently works as a Community Health Nurse in Baltimore, where she conducts home visits to provide support and resources to families who recently had a baby. Keshara aspires to become a midwife and plans to travel the world to learn from traditional midwives.

Dr. Shawndaya Thrasher, LSU School of Social Work Assistant Professor, research explores racial/ethnic differences in bullying victimization outcomes. She holds a Doctorate from University of Kentucky, a Master of Social Work from the University of Georgia, and a Master of Science in Criminology from University of West Georgia. She has over 8 years of direct practice with children and families in school, residential, and community settings. Her research interests broadly include bullying risks and protective factors, and effects of child bullying involvement on child welfare and development. Outside of research, she enjoys writing poetry, traveling, and spending quality time with family and friends.
About Sista Cristina Perez...Cristina Perez is currently a Medical Billing Specialist for a Mental Health company in Rosedale, MD and a Special Education Reading Interventionist at a High School in Prince George's County. A proud graduate of Gettysburg College, where she earned a Bachelor's of the Arts in English with a Writing Concentration. She was inspired to join the education field during the Covid Pandemic where she rediscovered her love for reading and writing. About Sista Michelle... Dr. Michelle C. Sermon is a wife, mom of 4, daughter, oldest sister of 3, niece, friend, healer, educator, social work researcher, and expert in trauma, race, genetics, and DEI. Her research interests include the use of historical narratives to elucidate the trauma of intergenerational racialization experiences of African Americans in rural, southern US communities to develop and implement effective, community-specific healing interventions. As a clinician, Dr. Sermon grounds social work practice in her work with adults who have experienced complex trauma, justice involvement, severe mental illness, and co-occurring conditions. In the community, she conducts workshops and trainings on the intersection of race and trauma, intending to deconstruct the origins of race as a social construct and how it impacts human relationships. Dr. Sermon earned a PhD in Social Work from the University of Maryland Baltimore, a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from George Mason University, and a Master of Science (MS) degree in Human Genetics from Howard University. PJ Pierre-Jerome, M.A. (she/her) is a first-year Communication, Culture, and Media Studies (CCMS) PhD scholar at Howard University. Her curiosity about Black female archetypes in the U.S. context has expanded to an interest in exploring Black female communal communication practices within and among the Haitian community. Her professional aspirations include contributing towards research rooted in intersectionality awareness that facilitates, highlights, and advances equity within the Black diaspora.

Michelle D. Taylor holds a PhD in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. Rooted in the Akan philosophical concept of Sankofa (looking back to advance forward), she centers her research on the socio-historical experiences of Black women in the afterlife of slavery in the United States Her dissertation research explores the surveillance of Black women in higher education through a critical examination of Foucault’s panopticism. She also holds an MA in Linguistics with a focus on language evolution within the African diaspora. Her work is grounded in Black Political Thought and Black Feminism.

Shawntay Stocks, Ph.D., is a native Baltimorean, mother, wife, poet, and community-engaged JEDI scholar-practitioner. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in History from Guilford College, her Master’s degree in English and African-American literature from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and her Ph.D. in the Language, Literacy, and Culture program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County where her dissertation focused on faculty diversity within higher education.

Asha S. Winfield, Ph.D., is an assistant professor at LSU’s Manship School of Mass Communication. Winfield is a critical/cultural media scholar with a focus on the stories (creation, rituals and practices) of Black individuals and groups occurring in the media, culture and society. As a researcher and filmmaker, she aims to use intersectionality, counternarratives, critical race theory and Black feminist thought to frame and center the experiences of Black people as they relate to audience reception through meaning-making and identity-making. Winfield is also the founder and director of the research group The Storytellers Lab at LSU. This group of academic storytellers utilizes qualitative research (community-based, participatory, photovoice, and video voice research) in concert with documentary filmmakers to share the cultural and historical narratives of everyday people in different contexts.
