allapopp and coalition-building through embodied technology

Hi loves! We have launched a new residency program called Coalition in times of AI: intersecting struggles for which we have four amazing creative sparring partners.

For this episode we were in conversation with one of them: the fantastic allapopp (no pronouns) who is a Berlin based interdisciplinary artist  whose queer and non-binary gaze focuses on tech-positive visions .

We discussed the practicalities of coalition-building among which care work, money and feminist values, we talked about pies and family recipes as communication device and building better worlds.

Recommendations from alla:

  • What Does It Mean to Be Post-Soviet? Decolonial Art from the Ruins of the Soviet Empire
  • "Technologies of Russian Colonialism: Occupation, Persistence, Implication"
  • "Have Caucasians Ever Been White? Russian Colonialism and the Machinery of Racialization"
  • Decolonial AestheSis and the Post-Soviet Art by Madina Tlostanova.

Zas iehulee & Black Memes life cycles

Zas Ieluhee is a visual artist and independent researcher based in France. Their work revolves around memetics, quantum physics, in particular light as a physical phenomenon. Zas works with a mix of education with introspections with collages, abstract art, internet memes, and workshops.

The artist strongly believes that what we call AI today is in reality a one layer of animal/human intelligence. In this episode, we talk about Badushka, who is a digital character representing an introspective influencer that the artist can just play with with no pressure, but who's also the main face of the 'Human dot bot' project. We talked about memetics, the wealth of black cultures and African spiritualities, among many exciting, beautiful, and meaningful things.

Kira Xonorika & indigenous trans AI as a portal for plurality and connection

In this episode you will hear from our resident Kira Xonorika - interdisciplinary artist & writer. Their work explores the multidimensional connections between ancestry, futurity and magic. Through transcultural, feminist, and AI-collaborative frameworks, Xonorika weaves worlds that center multi-species intelligence to decolonize binary relations in history,

aims to connect with ancestral memory in the construction of poetic and vibrant worlds: crafting an origin story for future-present time/space axiological restoration. Visualizing an indigenous, trans AI restoring memory and building worlds, historical trans aesthetics, and multimodal bodies, this piece aims to create a portal for safety, abundance, plurality, and connection.

Bretas & Black memory through new technologies

This third episode was recorded during our *In the loop* residency kick-off week and features our resident Bretas - visual artist and researcher. His artistic work has as its main theme the Imagery of Memory, combining politics, technology and history in multiple formats. Among his works, the creation of AI ‘DeepFakes’ stands out as a tool for intervening in African and Indigenous memory in Brazil, using Artificial Intelligence to tension temporalities and imaginaries.

    #01:  “The Eye That Portrays.”

A large-format printing of a eye. Depicting a crop of an 1860’s ethnological portrait, this artwork features a close up, made via AI Upscaling, into the eye of an old Black woman from Bahia, Brazil.

    #02: “Self-Archive”

Using AI deepfakes to performatively interact with the archive, cloning the 150 years old portraits faces into his own, as digital masks.

Noam Youngrak Son & unionizing with AI

This second episode was recorded during our *In the loop* residency kick-off and features our resident Noam Youngrak Son - communication designer practicing queer publishing.

In their work, Son explores revolutionary methods of disseminating deviant narratives. They attempt to convey the voices of marginalized bodies into designed forms that do not conform to the cis-hetero-normative and colonial power structure.

Their work for the residency is named Unionizing the speculative: Speculative fundraising towards generative AI - creative worker unionization and is an urgent response to these urgent following questions: How can creative workers unionize with generative AI? How can we as creative workers be accountable to AI-led automation?
