This third episode was recorded during our *In the loop* residency kick-off week and features our resident Bretas - visual artist and researcher. His artistic work has as its main theme the Imagery of Memory, combining politics, technology and history in multiple formats. Among his works, the creation of AI ‘DeepFakes’ stands out as a tool for intervening in African and Indigenous memory in Brazil, using Artificial Intelligence to tension temporalities and imaginaries.
#01: “The Eye That Portrays.”
A large-format printing of a eye. Depicting a crop of an 1860’s ethnological portrait, this artwork features a close up, made via AI Upscaling, into the eye of an old Black woman from Bahia, Brazil.
#02: “Self-Archive”
Using AI deepfakes to performatively interact with the archive, cloning the 150 years old portraits faces into his own, as digital masks.
*In the loop* residency is a project that's part of the residency program thehost.is by Deichtorhallen Hamburg and Kampnagel International Center for Finer Arts, in collaboration with ifa - Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen.
