FRIDAY FAMILY FILM NIGHT
Friday Family Film Night: THE THING review

It's a wrap!

On the thirty-first night of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister joins me in reviewing THE THING (1982), from the master, director John Carpenter, the film has a screenplay by Bill Lancaster , from a short story "Who Goes There?" from the author, John W. Campbell Jr.  A team of American researchers at a remote Antarctic outpost encounters a sled dog fleeing a Norwegian helicopter, only to discover a terrifying, shape-shifting alien entity.  After the entity infiltrates their camp and begins absorbing and perfectly imitating the men, extreme paranoia takes hold, as no one can be sure who is still human and who is the "Thing."  The remaining men desperately fight to expose the alien before it can escape the base and assimilate all life on Earth, leading to a desperate final confrontation in the frozen isolation.  The film clocks in at 1 h and 31 m, is rated R and we caught it on DVD but you can find it on AMC+, Peacock and on Prime Video to buy/rent. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.

Friday Family Film Night: GRETEL & HANSEL review

On the twenty-seventh night of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister joins me in reviewing GRETEL & HANSEL (2020), from director Osgood Perkins, the film has a screenplay by Rob Hayes based on the Grimm fairy tale.  Separated from their desperate mother, teenage Gretel (Sophia Lillis) leads her younger brother Hansel (Samuel Leakey) through a desolate, distant fairytale countryside in a desperate search for food and work.  After a long journey, the siblings are lured by the scent of a lavish feast to a strange, black-gabled house in the forest, home to the seemingly kind but unsettling woman (Alice Krige).  As Gretel's protective instincts clash with the woman's manipulative attempts to mentor her in burgeoning dark powers, the siblings begin to uncover the chilling and sinister secrets of the seemingly bottomless pantry and their host's true nature.  The film clocks in at 1 h and 27 m, is rated PG-13 and we caught it on the Hoopla app but you can find it on Prime Video, Pluto TV, Roku Channel, Tubi and to buy/rent on Prime Video. Friday Family Film Night: TUCKER AND DALE vs EVIL review

On the twenty-sixth night of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister and KT join me in reviewing TUCKER AND DALE vs EVIL (2010), from writers Eli Craig and Morgan Jurgenson, the film is directed by Eli Craig.  Tucker (Alan Tudyk) and Dale (Tyler Labine), two kind-hearted but stereotypical-looking "hillbillies," head to their newly purchased vacation cabin in the woods for a relaxing fishing trip and some home renovation.  Their peaceful getaway is interrupted by a group of college students who, due to a series of hilarious and increasingly gruesome misunderstandings, become convinced that Tucker and Dale are murderous backwoods killers.  As the terrified college students attempt to "fight back" or "rescue" their friends, they accidentally cause a series of bizarre and bloody fatalities, leaving the baffled and innocent duo struggling to figure out why these kids are killing themselves all over their property.  The film clocks in at 1 h and 29 m, is rated R and we caught it on Prime Video but you can find it on the Hoopla app as well as Hulu, Pluto TV, Roku Channel, Tubi and to buy/rent on Prime Video. Friday Family Film Night: WEAPONS review

** This review was recorded in September **

On the twenty-five night of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister joins me in reviewing WEAPONS (2025), from writer/director Zach Cregger.  When seventeen children from the same elementary school class suddenly vanish from their homes at the exact same time one night, their small community is thrown into a state of panic and suspicion.  The mystery is explored through the shifting perspectives of the children's teacher, an increasingly desperate grieving father, a troubled local cop, and other citizens whose lives are spiraling in the wake of the inexplicable tragedy.  As fear and paranoia mount, these disparate characters are drawn into a chilling web of dark rituals and supernatural manipulation to uncover what truly happened to the missing children.  The film clocks in at 2 h and 8 m, is rated R and we caught it in theatres but you can find it on HBO Max and to buy/rent on Prime Video. Friday Family Film Night: TRAIN TO BUSAN review

On the twenty-fourth night of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister joins me in reviewing TRAIN TO BUSAN (2016), screenplay from Park Joo-suk and Yeon Sang-ho, the film is directed by Yeon Sang-ho.  A busy, divorced fund manager, Seok-woo, reluctantly agrees to take his young daughter, Su-an, on the KTX bullet train from Seoul to Busan for her birthday, unaware that a deadly zombie virus has just begun rapidly spreading across the country.  Just after the train departs, an infected passenger boards and quickly turns, unleashing a chaotic outbreak among the confined passengers who must now fight their way through the narrow train cars to survive.  As the high-speed train races toward the supposed safety of Busan, Seok-woo and a small group of survivors are forced to battle the relentless hordes while also confronting the worst of human selfishness among the remaining uninfected.  The film clocks in at 1 h and 58 m, is unrated  (but let's say R) and we caught the film on the Hoopla app, but you can watch the film on Netflix and to buy/rent on Prime Video. Friday Family Film Night: THE SADNESS review

On the twenty-second night of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister joins me in reviewing ROH (2019), written/directed by Rob Jabbaz.  After a year of downplaying a flu-like virus, the city of Taipei is suddenly plunged into bloody chaos as a mutation causes the infected to act on their darkest, most violent, and most perverse impulses.  The highly aggressive plague turns ordinary people into sadistic, grinning maniacs who revel in torture, murder, and sexual assault.  Separated when the outbreak begins, a young couple, Jim (Berant Zhu) and Kat (Regina Lei), fight desperately to reunite while navigating the extreme depravity that has destroyed all semblance of civilization.  The film clocks in at 1 h and 39 m, is rated TV-MA and we caught the film on the Hoopla app, but watch the film on AMC+ and to buy/rent on Prime Video. Friday Family Film Night: ROH review

On the twenty-first night of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister joins me in reviewing ROH (2019), written by Emir Ezwan, Amir Hafizi and Nazri Vovinski, the film is directed by Emir Ezwan.  In a secluded hut deep within the Malaysian forest, a single mother and her two children's isolated life is shattered when they encounter a strange, mute little girl covered in mud. The girl repays their kindness with a grim prophecy: the family will all be dead by the next full moon, an omen that is confirmed when she ritually slits her own throat. As the curse begins to unfold, escalating into death and paranoia, the family must contend with a wandering hunter and a seemingly helpful old woman, unsure who is truly a harbinger of the evil force that has targeted their souls.  The film clocks in at 1 h and 23 m, is unrated R and we caught the film on the Hoopla app, but watch the film on Plex, Roku Channel, Tubi and to buy/rent on Prime Video.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.

FRIDAY FAMILY FILM NIGHT
Friday Family Film Night: PRESENCE review

On the twentieth night of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister joins me in reviewing PRESENCE (2024), written by David Koepp, the film is directed by Steven Soderbergh.  The film is shot entirely from the point of view of an unseen entity, which observes a dysfunctional family—a mother, father, and two teenage children—after they move into a new suburban house.  As tensions and secrets within the family escalate, the "Presence" begins to interact with its surroundings, seemingly acting as a protective force, particularly toward the troubled daughter, Chloe (Callina Liang).  A final, shocking act of intervention reveals the true, heartbreaking identity of the entity and the profound sacrifice made to save a life.  The film clocks in at 1 h and 24 m, is rated R and we caught the film on Hulu but you can also buy/rent it on Prime Video.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.

The friends descend into paranoia and betrayal as they are picked off in gruesome accidents, culminating in a shocking twist where the final two survivors board the ill-fated Flight 180 from the original film, revealing the movie is a prequel.  The film clocks in at 1 h and 32 m, is rated R and we caught the film on HBO Max but you can also catch it to buy/rent on Prime Video.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.
The last film in the series, FINAL DESTINATION: BLOODLINES (2025), is directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein from a script by Guy Busick, Lori Evans Taylor and Jon Watts.  The film follows a college student who begins having recurring nightmares of a catastrophic 1969 skyscraper collapse, a disaster originally averted by her grandmother.  She discovers her entire family is on Death's list because they are the descendants of those who should have died, and must try to break a generational curse.  The family is then systematically killed off in elaborate ways, following a bloodline order, until the final two survivors are killed by a train derailment caused by an object related to the 1969 premonition.  The film clocks in at 1 h and 50 m, is rated R and we caught the film on HBO Max but you can also  buy/rent on Prime Video.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.

FRIDAY FAMILY FILM NIGHT
Friday Family Film Night: FINAL DESTINATION 3 & THE FINAL DESTINATION review

On the fifteenth night of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister and our buddy, Zack, join me in reviewing FINAL DESTINATION 3 (2006) and THE FINAL DESTINATION (2009).

In FINAL DESTINATION 3 (2006), directed by James Wong, from a script by Glen Morgan, James Wong and Jeffrey Reddick, a high school student's premonition of a catastrophic roller coaster derailment saves her and a group of friends from the deadly accident. The student soon discovers that photographs taken at the amusement park contain cryptic clues about how Death is planning to kill the survivors in Rube Goldberg-style accidents. Despite their efforts to save the marked individuals, Death proves unstoppable, ultimately claiming all the protagonists in a second, unforeseen mass disaster.   The film clocks in at 1 h and 38 m, is rated R and we caught the film on HBO Max but you can also catch it to buy/rent on Prime Video.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.

The fourth film in the series, THE FINAL DESTINATION (2009), is directed by David R. Ellis from a script by Eric Bress and Jeffrey Reddick.  The film follows a college student's vision of a massive, deadly pile-up at a stock car race allows him and his friends to escape the grandstand moments before it collapses.  The group of survivors quickly learns that they are all on Death's list, with the initial order of their demise confirmed by the order of their subsequent horrific, over-the-top deaths.  Racing against time and premonitions, the student attempts to save the remaining group from a series of elaborate accidents, only for Death's original design to catch up to the final survivors in a sudden, brutal climax.  The film clocks in at 1 h and 22 m, is rated R and we caught the film on HBO Max but you can also catch it on AMC+ but also to buy/rent on Prime Video.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.

FRIDAY FAMILY FILM NIGHT
Friday Family Film Night: FINAL DESTINATION & FINAL DESTINATION 2 review

On the fourteenth night of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister and our buddy, Zack, join me in reviewing FINAL DESTINATION (2000) and FINAL DESTINATION 2 (2003).

In Final Destination (2000), directed by James Wong, from a script by Glen Morgan, James Wong and Jeffrey Reddick.  The film follows a high school student who cheats death when a premonition prompts him and several classmates to get off a doomed flight moments before it explodes. Death, an unseen supernatural force, begins hunting the survivors in the order they were meant to die, using a series of elaborate, Rube Goldberg-like accidents.   The film clocks in at 1 h and 38 m, is rated R and we caught the film on HBO Max but you can also catch it to buy/rent on Prime Video.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.
The sequel, Final Destination 2 (2003), directed by David R. Ellis from a script by J Mackye Gruber, Eric Bress and Jeffrey Reddick.  The film follows a new group of people who are saved from a massive highway pileup after a young woman has a terrifying premonition of the crash.  Realizing they are "loose ends" from the first film's disruption of Death's design, the new survivors—with help from the original's sole survivor—race to find a "new life" loophole to permanently break the chain.  Despite their best efforts to intervene and sacrifice themselves, the deadly design proves inescapable, ultimately claiming most of the survivors in creatively brutal fashion.  The film clocks in at 1 h and 30 m, is rated R and we caught the film on HBO Max but you can also catch it to buy/rent on Prime Video.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.

FRIDAY FAMILY FILM NIGHT
Friday Family Film Night: 28 YEARS LATER review

On the thirteenth night of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister joins me in reviewing 28 YEARS LATER (2025), from director Danny Boyle  with a script by Alex Garland.  Set nearly three decades after the Rage virus devastated the UK, the film focuses on a small, isolated community living on a fortified island off the English mainland.  Twelve-year-old Spike (Alfie Williams) ventures onto the infected mainland with his father (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) for a coming-of-age ritual, but their journey is interrupted by mutated infected and a crisis concerning Spike's terminally ill mother, Isla (Jodie Comer).  In a desperate act to find a cure, Spike defies his father to take his mother to a reclusive doctor named Kelson (Ralph Fiennes), leading them on a perilous trek where the evolving nature of both the infected and the surviving humans is revealed.  The film clocks in at 1 h and 55 m, is rated R and we caught the film on Netflix but you can also catch it to buy/rent on Prime Video.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.

FRIDAY FAMILY FILM NIGHT
Friday Family Film Night: 28 WEEKS LATER review

On the twelfth night of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister joins me in reviewing 28 WEEKS LATER (2007), from director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, with a script by Rowan Joffe, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Enrique López Lavigne.  Six months after the initial outbreak, the US Army establishes a heavily-guarded safe zone in London for repatriated citizens, believing the Rage virus is dead.  However, the virus is unwittingly re-introduced when two siblings sneak out to their old home and find their mother alive but an asymptomatic carrier.  The resulting, rapid-fire second outbreak causes the military's strict containment protocol to fail violently, forcing the children and a few survivors to flee a city now being indiscriminately firebombed by NATO forces.  The film clocks in at 1 h and 39 m, is rated R and we caught the film on Hulu but you can also catch it on AMC+ and to buy/rent on Prime Video.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.
