Episode 33.
Today I'm joined by the founder, owner and CEO of Max Strength Fitness, Jeff Tomaszewski. Jeff has long been a proponent of safe and efficient high intensity training, and I'm lucky to have known him for the better part of a decade.
His extremely successful high intensity training studios, Max Strength Fitness, are some of the fastest growing in the strength training boutique studio space. Since launching the franchising company a few years back, they are already in the dozens of signed locations and have plans for dozens more in the coming years.
Jeff's unique expertise is that he's found a way to blend evidence based philosophy in an extremely customer service focused atmosphere. While many studios lack concise systems that are needed for growth, Max Strength is in my opinion the epitome of what a successful studio should look like. Blending a financially viable product, at a reasonable investment point, and using proven strategies that will actually allow entrepreneurs to grow.
The problem with most boutique studio brands, particularly in HIT, is they have all the knowledge, but they lack the systems necessary for consistent scaling and growth. I've seen this first hand in my previous business. Where I felt left out to dry in a new market with a advertising that didn't work, and a leadership team that lacked clear and concise business fundamentals.
If you're looking for a fantastic investment opportunity to grow your own business, or if you've been looking for a place to train locally that's safe, effective and extremely efficient, look no further than Max Strength. If they're not in your area yet, they surely will be soon.
If you've ever thought about adding to your own home gym, there's a brand I'm a huge fan of that I couldn't recommend more highly. Temple of Gainz is a California based company that's making waves in the home gym space with some of the best products on the market.
Their thoughtful designs inspired by great machines of the past are constantly being innovated and improved. Their customer service is top notch and they have some of the most competitive prices in the space with their direct to consumer shipping (which is free if you spend more than $1500). Whether you own a small studio or want to create the ultimate home gym, you should give Temple of Gainz a try!

Episode 32!
I'm ecstatic to be joined today by Derek Van Every. Derek is another brilliant student from Stu Phillips lab at McMaster University. He's already completed his Master's and is currently working his way through his PhD under the tutelage of Dr. Phillips.
For those of you that follow online body building, most will be familiar with Jeff Nippard. Jeff has a huge following and has spent close to a decade building an audience in the online evidence based bodybuilding space. He recently conducted a super interesting study (with the help of Derek, Stu and another former guest and current student Alysha D'Souza). They worked together to track a year long experiment where Jeff tried to maximize his physique using every traditional bodybuilding modality, bulk, cut and some science based lifting and programming on top.
The results... were super interesting to say the least. In this episode I break down the experiment with Derek and get his thoughts on what went right, what went wrong, and what if anything he'd potentially change if he had to do it all over again. If you're familiar with Jeff and his content, you definitely don't want to miss this one. You can find the Youtube video HERE, where it currently has close to 6 million views!

Episode 31!
Today I'm thrilled to be joined by one of the brightest minds in the evidence based exercise space. Dr. Lauren Colenso-Semple is a brilliant researcher focusing on an often understudied area in the sports science literature... women.
Her research deals with a variety of subjects specific to female research participants and she's made it her job to reevaluate long held dogma in the research literature and replace it with actionable recommendations, specifically tailored for female lifters. This week we discuss some of her research specifically on the myth of birth control and its potential interference with hypertrophy.
Lauren has been featured on dozens of podcasts and her research has be shown in the NYT, NPR, Bloomberg and many more. I'm honored to have her on today and for my female listeners this episode is a must watch. Lauren is continuing to hold a light to women in exercise science and we're thrilled to see what else she accomplishes in her career. If you want to learn more about Lauren or her research, check out her website HERE.

Episode 30!
This week I'm thrilled to be joined by one of the longest tenured basketball strength and conditioning coaches in the country. Who during this podcast when we recorded it had been with Florida State University for over 20 years.
Mike Bradley is one of the longest tenured strength coaches in all of college athletics. However at the time of this recording he was entering what might turn out to be his last season with Florida State. As we discuss in this episode, the world of college athletics is constantly shifting. Typically coaches move around quite often and when head coaching changes happen, those coaches usually bring in their own support staff.
Coach Bradley however has had consistency unlike most in the college sports world. He's been with the same University for close to two decades, simply because until last season, the head coach has been the same. But with Coach Hamilton stepping down, it's likely there will finally be a changing of the guards in Tallahassee. While this is unfortunate for the athletes there, in this episode we talk all about Coach Bradley's philosophy. How he trains his athletes and why he thinks training high level athletes is not THAT MUCH different than training the general population.
If you've ever wondered what the difference should be between athletic performance training and training for health and longevity, you don't want to miss this episode. Coach Bradley is a fountain of wisdom and insight and you care about high level athletic performance at all, this will be a great episode for you.

Episode 29... "The Gospel of Fitness"
Today I have the pleasure of being joined by Steve McKinney. Steve owns "Fitness and More" training studio in Granite City, Illinois.
Steve has specialized in delivering private 1-on-1 High Intensity, Low Impact workouts for over three decades. He's delivered 10's of thousands of 1-on-1 sessions and his studio is packed with a waitlist.
I was connected with Steve through a mutual friend who told me about his studio, and his recently published book "The Gospel of Fitness" which is currently a best seller on Amazon. We talk about how Steve got into High Intensity Training, how his studio operates and finally about his book and it's principles which will help you with it's simple, non-nonsense plan of action to:

Episode 28!
I'm so excited to be joined today but one of my favorite researchers currently in the field of Exercise Science. Dr. James McKendry joins me from his brand new home at the University of British Columbia in Canada.
James is a former student of Dr. Stu Phillips (probably the leading protein scientist in the world), and now he's running his own lab in Canada.
We talk a bit about what he has planned for his new lab, and what type of tests he's hoping to run in the future. However, the bulk of today's episode is about a paper James was a part of on Mitigating Disuse in an Aging Population. Essentially, how do we make sure we don't lose muscle as we get older.
This paper and conversation were fascinating as the barrier for consequential effects that will make life changing improvements in very low. If you are not moving and strength training you should start so as soon as possible. Especially if you have some sort of life changing surgery or event in the near future. There's no time like the present to get started to preserve your health and lifespan for the long term.
I think the listeners will find a ton of value in this episode and I can't wait to hear what you think. If you're interested in learning more from James or reaching out with questions, feel free to email him directly at james.mckendry@ubc.ca.

Episode 27! Jack is Back!
I'm joined today again by my good friend Jack Oosten of JackedN'Leen Gym in Rogers, MN. Jack and his wife have built on of the premier bodybuilding destinations in the country right in our back yard. If you're ever in the Twin Cities, make sure you take a day to stop by and check out this Utopia of Fitness equipment. J&LGym.
On today's episode, Jack and I chat about something near and dear to my heart, Men's Health Optimization. The word "optimize" gets thrown around a lot in our industry, but Jack is a world class coach that knows what it means to get the absolute best out of someone and push them past their limits.
A little over a year ago I came to him, rundown, tired and just not feeling like myself anymore. He helped me put together a program and introduced me to the world of TRT. Today we talk all about how to know if TRT might be right for you. What are the signs and symptoms, what are the benefits and what are the risks.
Jack lives and breathes this world and there's no one better to discuss the nuance of something that most people have heard of, but don't really understand. I hope you find this information helpful, and if you want to work with Jack use his Coaching Link. There's nobody better in the game, whether your goal is just to feel better, look better, or even to compete in a full blown body building show!
If you're interested in learning more about TRT or think you might be a good candidate, check out "Ryze". That's the company I use and trust with all my clients and for myself. Ryze Health Form (Use code "Reformed" for 20% off your order).

Episode... 26! It's as cold... as ICE!
I'm joined today by Alec Pinero, another great student out of Lehman College in the Bronx, under the tutelage of the great Dr. Brad Schoenfeld. Alec is a genius and sure to do great things in the industry. The Harvard alum is currently pursuing his PhD, but today's conversation centered around a paper he was part of for his Master's Program.
Ice baths and cold plunges have become a mainstay in the biohacking and health and fitness space, but Alec and his team published one of the first large meta-analysis a couple years back to challenge this fitness trend and see if this cold water might actually be doing more harm then good.
If you've been wondering whether to add a cold plunge to your routine, make sure you check out this episode first. You could be "Throwing Cold Water On Your Gains!".

Episode 25! Today I'm so priviledged to be joined by one of the greats to ever do it in the strength and conditioning space.
Former NFL strength and conditioning coach Mark Asanovich shares his treasure trove of wisdom. Mark was a S&C coach for multiple teams in his career spanning over 20 years in the NFL. He was also one of the last coaches to truly practice a High Intensity Training style at the highest level of football. He's been a coach on the Bucs, the Ravens, the Jaguars, and the Minnesota Vikings.
He still occasionally takes clients out of his awesome garage gym at home which is filled with machines straight from his time at those programs. Currently he's working as a professor at St. Cloud State, teaching and inspiring what will surely be the next generation of coaches.
Mark shares his "5 P's of Strength Training". Whether you're familiar with strength and conditioning or have no idea, this is an episode you don't want to miss. It's filled with tons of useful information you can surely apply to your own training. Give it a listen and be sure to share!

Episode 24!
This episode is a little bit different than previous on this show. I'm thrilled today to be joined by two clients of my company Reformed Fitness (HERE), Rebecca & James Lockwood.
I've know Rebecca for almost 4 years when she started working with me remotely. She moved on to Reformed Fitness where we reconnected when I started working completely remote in 2024.
Rebecca is an amazing business women, mother, writer and entrepreneur and her husband James is her steadfast companion, stay at home dad (an often under appreciated role in MHO) and collaborator in all of her business adventures.
We love Rebecca at Reformed Fitness. So much that we've built our entire marketing strategy around finding more amazing clients just like her and her husband. So when she told me about her new book "The Cohesive Couple" (HERE) which is inspired by her work using EOS as an implementer, I wanted to learn more.
EOS is a business operating system for entrepreneurs. It helps to streamline the process of meeting, team building and brand building. After over a decade in that field helping businesses grow, she and James decided they wanted to see how applying a similar idea to relationships might work. Like many couples, she and James had struggled over the course of their long relationship to continue to have valuable and constructive conversation. This was the impetus of "The Cohesive Couple". Creating systems, and processes that allow your relationship to grow and flourish.
Treating your love life like a business, might not sound very appealing at first. But just like with a business, relationships get in ruts, and many times if people don't have the right systems in place, they're destined to go bankrupt or in relationships, split and fail. "The Cohesive Couple" is a game-changer for relationships. We talk all about how the system works, and why it works. We also discuss how much of a role exercise has played in their relationship. How having a healthy partner, someone that you can grow and evolve with is so important to longevity.
While this isn't our normal science filled adventure. I think it's extremely interesting and applicable to how to make your life, your fitness and your relationship work in the real world. Not just in theory, or in a lab. So enjoy and if you're interested in learning more, but the book, and reach out to the team to find out how "The Cohesive Couple" can help!

Episode 23! The Jordan Podcast! And that's appropriate because today I have one of the GOATS in the field of Exercise Science Research!
In this episode I'm joined by PhD student Alysha D'Souza (IG HERE) from McMaster University in Canada. Alysha is a student in Dr. Stu Phillips lab and is leading the way in a new generation of female focused exercise science research (an area that's currently severely lacking in the field).
In this episode we discuss a new and exciting muscle composition modality the "COSIAM" method. A combination of multiple isotopes to test the actual amount of skeletal muscle you currently have.
This is exciting because most body composition tools use algorithms and proxy measures to estimate muscle mass. Till now, besides performing an autopsy (which means no more gains anyways), there hasn't been a tool to allow researchers to not just distinguish between lean tissue and fat, but actual "skeletal muscle". Which is really what we want to measure in strength research.
The value of muscle mass and the link to resistance training is now widely known and propagated, but we've always relied on tools that have a significant margin of error to make our best educated guess at what is happening internally. Though this method will probably never be widely available, it sheds valuable insight on the variability in these tools (i.e. you're probably not as jacked as you think).
This episode is research dense and I do my best to bring everything down to a level that's easy to understand. But if you're interested in how to actually measure muscle, you don't want to miss this!

Episode 22! The Emmett Smith of Podcast Episodes! And just like the all-time leading rusher, this one is all about speed... or time... or the time you'll save being speedy.
I'm joined today by Ryan Burke (IG HERE). Ryan is a tremendous young researcher currently pursuing his PhD at Rutgers University in New Jersey. Ryan is a former Master's Graduate from the Applied Muscle Development lab at Lehman University under the guidance of the great Dr. Brad Schoenfeld.
Today Ryan and are are discussing a paper he was part of as part of his Master's Program looking at the efficacy of Supersets compared to traditional set training as a way to make workouts more efficient.
Supersets in layman's terms are paired sets of exercise with minimal to no rest in between. They can be complimentary (think pec fly into a chest press), antagonist (think chest press into seated row), or not related at all (biceps and squats). For this study the exercises were mostly antagonistic. Both groups performed a full body resistance training program, but the supersets group saved close to 30% in time compared to the Traditional training group.
The outcomes were almost identical. This makes supersets a great tool in your tool belt for time efficient training. That doesn't mean it's better than a traditional training approach, but another way to make training more convenient and time efficient during potentially busier periods in life.
This is a great episode and Ryan is a brilliant young researcher. Check it out and keep your eye out for more great episodes in the future!

Episode 21... BlackJack! He's back! The Jack Attack!
In this week's episode I'm joined by Jack O0sten. Jack is the founder and owner of Jacked&Leen Gym in Rogers, MN. One of the true Mecca's of Bodybuilding in the Midwest... and possibly the world.
Jack has been in the bodybuilding game for over a decade and he and his wife Eileen opened their dream gym in 2024. Together they've been coaching and helping hundreds of clients for the last 5+ years.
Jack is also one of the smartest folks I know in the fitness space. He has the gift, for form, technique and probably most importantly, motivation. You do a set with Jack looking over you and you'll never work harder in your life.
This week Jack joins me to talk all things rep speed and cadence. How fast should you be moving in your workouts? Is there really an ideal tempo? Does anything actually get better or worse if you move faster or slower. Together we answer all of this and much more. You definitely don't want to miss this episode!

Episode 20... ! They said we couldn't do it... but here we are ah-doing-it!
Today I'm joined by my friend and college Eric Feigl. Eric has been a coach for close to 20 years and trained thousands of client sessions, in person and online. He's currently based out of Ohio at Mission 5 Fitness (HERE) where he takes clients in person, but you can also find him online if you're outside of his area and looking for coaching.
Eric and I spent this episode talking about the current state of the fitness industry. Where it might be in the next 5-10 years, and how to position yourself to continue to be competitive in the fitness space.
Eric is a brilliant guy with a TON of knowledge and experience. Definitely give this episode a listen if you want to know more about the future of fitness!

Episode 19... that's almost 20! They said we couldn't do it... but here we are ah-doing-it!
Today I'm joined by the king of stats, Dr. James Steele. Dr. Steele is a good friend and colleague, former associate professor at Solent University and currently the head of the research department for Keiser Australia (HERE).
He joins me on the show today to discuss a relatively recent paper he was a major part of called "Machine-based resistance training improves functional capacity in older adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis." (HERE). This paper is a fantastic Meta-Analysis (combining multiple papers together on the same topic), that looked at the effects of resistance training on machines and how that affected functional capacity measures in older individuals.
Often fitness folks confuse the idea that "functional training" must involve things like, balance, coordination, free weights, bands, and plyometrics. The results from this paper show that simple progressive resistance training using full body resistance machines, improves these results just as much as traditional "functional training". This is great news for older individuals (and younger ones) who want to get stronger and feel better well into their golden years.
You don't have to do any fancy exercises to improve functional capacity. Simply strength train hard, brief, and infrequent. Progress the weights and reps over time, and you've got all the functional training you'll need. As with most things, this applies to older individuals and also... athletes.
If you're interested in hearing more about why exercise doesn't have to be complicated, give this episode a listen!
And if you haven't already please like and subscribe to the podcast. If you'd like to work with me directly or any of my colleagues feel free to schedule a Free Discovery Call HERE.
Episode 18!!! The king of IG cooking content and hypertrophy gains is back!
In this week's episode I'm joined by Max Coleman, MS. Max is a previous guest on the show and one of the brightest minds in the exercise science space today. He has a fantastic IG account where he break down scientific literature... all well cooking delicious treats!
In this week's episode we talk about the state of the science on a variety of different fronts. Supersets, Optimal Rest Periods, Minimum Effective Dose and more.
Max received his Master's from Lehman College in the Bronx under the tutelage of Dr. Brad Schoenfeld. He'll be part of the inaugural Doctoral Program at Lehman College which is set to launch this Fall. So check him out now, so you can say you knew him before he was Dr. Coleman.

Episode 16... another Doctor! And a Candadian! A double whammy of awesome!
Dr. Sara Oikawa is the Chief Science officer for Enhanced Medical Nutrition (HERE). They specialize in pre and post surgery nutrition interventions for patients who want to maximize their readiness going into surgery and prepare to be at their best following surgery.
Their flagship product EnRoute is a patented blend of protein and nutrients that has been clinically shown to not just maintian lean tissue, but actually acutely increase lean mass in individuals, even without regimented exercise. It's the ideal solution for someone looking to undergo a surgical procedure that might not be totally prepared through exercise and lifestyle for the high catabolic cost that can come with surgery.
If you or someone you know is having some kind of surgery or plans to potentially have it in the future, talk to your doctor or surgeon about making EMN part of your "pre-hab" routine.
Dr. Oikawa is a brilliant researcher with a Master's and PhD from McMaster University in Hamilton Canada. She studied under the world-renowned Dr. Stu Phillips and before coming to EMN worked for GSSI (Gatorade Sports Science Institute). We talk in this episode about the importance of protein and specifically protein quality. Sara also talks in detail about the importance of movement and exercise and the role they play in longevity.
In all transparency, I have no affiliation with EMN or EnRoute. I am just friends with Sara and when I learned about the product she was representing, I knew there must be something to it. Your risk of death from all causes increases significantly with surgery after the age of 65 (3-fold) in the years following surgery. So anything we can do to mitigate that risk in my book, is a win!

Episode 15 with Big Ticket Bess!
This week I'm joined by my good friend and business mentor Dave Bess. Dave is a renaissance man who does a little bit of everything. He owns a High Intensity training gym in AZ called "Greenlight Personal Training". He also runs a coaching and business mentor company called "PT Legends" which is what my company Reformed Fitness uses for our Health Coaching program. He also... really likes chicken sandwiches.
Dave is a genius at coaching, motivation and helping scale small-medium sized coaching businesses and helping to launch them into the stratosphere. His mentorship has been invaluable to myself and my colleagues and he's completely changed the way we do business.
If you've ever thought about launching a health coaching business of your own, or if you've ever been interested in working with a health coach to improve your own life, I would highly recommend you check out this episode to learn more.

Episode 14... The Doctor's are back!
This episode is great! Unfortunately my sound was not. It's a little echoey but I assure you it's worth your time.
I'm joined this week by the King of Hypertrophy himself, Dr. Brad Schoenfeld. Dr. Schoenfeld is the leading hypertophy (muscle growth) researcher in the world. If you're serious about growing big muscles, you know Dr. Brad. He leads the Lehman College Applied Muscle Development Lab in the Bronx which continues to pump out world class Exercise Scientists. He's been published close to if not more than 300 times and he's not stopping anytime soon.
Lehman is planning on launching it's PhD program this coming fall, and our former guest Max Coleman will be one of the first in line. In this week's episode we discuss some of the most popular topics in the bodybuilding world, like lengthened partials and interset rest periods. Brad does a great job of being "scientific" and not over selling any particular style or technique. But I think you'll find tons of useful information in this episode to incorporate into your current or future training programs.

Lucky Number 13!
You think you have a cool home gym... you are a pathetic. You think your local gym is cool... it is trash compared to Mike Petrella and STG! Mike has unquestionably the greatest collection of vintage and new exercise equipment on the planet. We took a vote, he won... it's over. Even more... he won't stop adding new stuff! Some might say he's obsessed... I just think he's awesome!
Mike own's STG Stength and Power in Ontario Canada (HERE). He's like most Canadians, super nice, affable and awesome. Last year was mostly doctors... apparently this year is the year of Jacked Canadians. STG is one of the premier strength and conditioning gyms in all of North America and certainly one of the coolest gyms in the whole world. It's still on my bucket list of places to check out.
On this week's episode we talk about different styles of training. Mike has experienced and worked with every type of client imaginable from high level olympic caliber athletes to little old grandmas. There's few people better positioned to talk about different training modalities.
If you're interested in all things fitness, this episode is a must listen.
