Death Happens - An Insiders Guide to Dying!
Season 2, Episode 12: Hard Choices for Loving People with Hank Dunn
Hospice Nurse Penny and Halley (Hospice Social Worker) welcome you on the journey to #NormalizeDeath!

Our guest is author and palliative care chaplain Hank Dunn. Since 1983, Hank Dunn has been ministering to patients at the end of their lives and their families. During that time he has served in a nursing home, hospice programs and a hospital. He has become an expert on the topic of helping patients and families with end-of-life decisions.

He is a past president of the Northern Virginia Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association and has served on several ethics committees. Hank has been a speaker nationally on the topic of making end-of-life decisions and spirituality and healthcare.

To help him explain end-of-life decisions to patients and families, he wrote a booklet to hand to them so they could reflect on the issues discussed. As an afterthought, he sent the book out to other institutions to see if they would be interested in purchasing it for their clients. First published in 1990, Hard Choices for Loving People: CPR, Feeding Tubes, Palliative Care, Comfort Measures, and the Patient with a Serious Illness is now in its Sixth Edition, with over four million copies sold, and it is being used in more than 5,000 hospitals, nursing homes, faith communities and hospice programs nationwide. His second book, Light in the Shadows: Meditations While Living with a Life-Threatening Illness, is a collection of reflections on the emotional and spiritual concerns at the end of life.

Season 2, Episode 11: Dead Talks with David Ferrugio
Thanks for joining Hospice Nurse Penny and Halley (Hospice Social Worker) on the journey to #NormalizeDeath!

Our guest is David Ferrugio, creator and host of the wildly successful Dead Talks Podcast. DEAD Talks David Ferrugio engages death a little bit differently. Each new guest shares their experience in a way that shatters the “don’t talk about death” taboo. It's more than a Grief Podcast; it's a conversation about life. Having lost his father on 9/11 when he was 12, David learned the importance of discussion and sharing other people's stories. Grief, loss, death can all start with a dialogue and his mission is to help people that have lost, that are grieving and those that haven't faced death yet, through the words of his guests.

Death Happens - An Insiders Guide to Dying!
Season 2, Episode 6: In Probate We Trust
Thanks for joining Hospice Nurse Penny and Halley (Hospice Social Worker) on the journey to #NormalizeDeath!

Our guest is attorney Andrew Schuh. Andrew earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern California in 1993. He went on to earn his Juris Doctorate from the University of Arizona in 1996. He currently lives in Mount Vernon, WA after having practiced law in Southern California for 20 years. His law practice covers the State of Washington and he continues to handle matters in California. He is admitted to practice in Washington State, California, and the District of Columbia.

Andy started out his career at a mid-size medical malpractice defense firm in Los Angeles. Thereafter, he worked at Lewis, Brisbois, Bisgaard and Smith, one of the largest firms in the country, in their Orange County, California office. He continued to defend medical malpractice cases at that time, while broadening his practice areas to include most any type of civil litigation and estate planning. In 2005, Andy was recruited to the Legal Department of Sun Healthcare Group, Inc. located in Irvine, California, where his practice focused on issues related to elder care.

Sun was a publicly traded, diversified healthcare company with nationwide operations, over 30,000 employees and annual revenue of approximately $2 billion. Initially, Andy worked for Sun as Corporate Counsel for Litigation. In that capacity, he managed patient care litigation in a 13-state territory. After two years, Andy was promoted to Assistant General Counsel. As AGC, Andy managed all litigation nationwide for the company and its subsidiaries and also crossed over with regulatory, compliance, employment law, and human resource departments. In addition, as AGC, he was an advisor to senior management and the Board of Directors. After 9 years of service to Sun, the company was acquired by Genesis Healthcare, LLC.  At that time, Andy and his family made the decision to move back to the Pacific Northwest, specifically to Mount Vernon, to be closer to his family and the home base of the family business, Schuh Family Farms.

Through Andy’s law practice he offers legal services in estate planning, probate, litigation, healthcare, and agri-business. He is a past President of the Skagit County Bar Association, Incorporator and past Board Member of Skagit Legal Aid, and past Treasurer and Board Member of the Mount Vernon Arts Commission. He continues to be a board member of the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival, Skagit County Law Library Board of Trustees, Western Washington Agricultural Association, Mount Vernon Public Schools Foundation, and is Chancellor St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.  When he has free time, Andy enjoys spending it with his wife Bonnie and their English Bulldog Vivian, and visiting their three adult children who live in Seattle (soon to be New York , NY) and Laguna Niguel, CA.

Death Happens - An Insiders Guide to Dying!
Season 2, Episode 5: No Country for Old People: one person’s tragedy is another’s advocacy
Thanks for joining Hospice Nurse Penny and Halley (Hospice Social Worker) on the journey to #NormalizeDeath!

Our guest is Susie Singer Carter. Susie is a multi-award-winning filmmaker, writer, director, producer, actor, podcast producer, host, and Caregiver Advocate. She is best known for writing, directing, and producing the 2018 Oscar Qualified short film, My Mom and The Girl starring Valerie Harper in her final performance, writing and producing “Bratz the Movie” for Lionsgate, and co-producing “Soul Surfer” for Sony. Susie also produces and hosts the podcast Love Conquers Alz – awarded BEST PODCAST 2020 by New Media Film Festival and is #4 on Feedspots’ 2022 25 Best Alzheimer’s Podcasts list. Susie is also the co-creator, co-writer, co-star, and director of the outrageous horror/comedy narrative podcast I Love Lucifer, nominated Best Audio Fiction 2023 by Indie Series Awards. Susie wrote the screenplay, “RUN”, based on the book “Plain Jane” and is attached to direct in spring 2024. She is currently    producing a documentary, No Country For Old People, which centers on the Nursing Home Neglect and the systemic healthcare crisis responsible for it. Susie is a sought-after speaker and has appeared in several Alzheimer’s awareness campaigns for Alzheimer’s Los Angeles. She proudly emceed the 2022 San Fernando Valley Alzheimer’s Walk holding up a purple flower for her mother who passed away in July 2022. She also hosts the Writers Guild of America West’s 3rd and Fairfax Podcast.

CURRENT FOCUS:

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD PEOPLE a Documentary: No Country for Old People is an amazing sorely-needed, long-awaited scorching documentary that should set the Long-Term Care Community, all Family Caregivers, Policy Makers, and the country ablaze. While chronicling the last 6 months of her mother’s life in a 5-star nursing home, a filmmaker captures proof that our Nursing Home system is broken. The system designed to protect our most vulnerable, has been flouted by venture capitalists and real estate investment trusts. Greed has caused millions of people insufferable consequences and even death and has done for decades, yet most people have no idea until it’s too late. No Country for Old People is a cautionary tale and a rally for change. I have partnered with former US Prosecutor and Attorney General, Rick Mountcastle (portrayed in the Hulu miniseries, “DOPESICK”), who spent years investigating and prosecuting nursing homes chains for fraud.  She has also attracted an impressive list of the most respected and staunch advocates to contribute to the film. The film is fiscally sponsored by The National Consumer Voice for Quality Long Term Care which provides them a 501(c)(3) status.

His early ministry included stints in Nairobi as a Colporteur with the Bible Society of Kenya, and in Eldoret as an Assistant Chaplain of a regional college. Expanding his horizons, Pastor Steve pursued a Bachelor of Theology from Bugema University in Uganda, where he deepened his understanding of theology while also serving as the Minister of Religious Affairs in the Student Guild.

Later, he returned to Nairobi where he completed a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Nairobi, while serving as a TV preacher and presenter on a national Christian channel and as an Associate Pastor of a large congregation in Nairobi, Kenya.

His quest for knowledge led him to pursue a Master of Divinity (MDiv) degree from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, USA. He graduated in 2020 amidst the unprecedented challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, which included the global closure of churches. These challenges catalyzed his calling into spiritual care within the Healthcare Industry, beginning with Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood, South Carolina.

Pastor Steve's journey in the United States has seen him serve in various capacities, including as a Hospice, Hospital, and Call Center Chaplain. Currently, he serves as a Volunteer Coordinator and Chaplain at Puget Sound Home Health and Hospice, where he continues to touch lives with compassion and empathy. Prior to this, he served as a Spiritual Counselor with Hospice of the Northwest in Mt. Vernon and Walla Walla Hospice in Washington.

Pastor Steve's ministry has brought solace and comfort to many individuals and families facing the end-of-life journey. His commitment to service extends beyond traditional settings, as evidenced by his engagements as a guest speaker in churches, universities, schools, prisons, family gatherings, and corporate functions. With his wife Ninah, he is raising two daughters while also planting a new church called Seattle Sabbath Fellowship.

In summary, Pastor Steve Bundi's journey exemplifies dedication, resilience, and a deep-rooted commitment to serving others. Through his multifaceted ministry spanning continents, he continues to impact lives with compassion and empathy, bringing hope and comfort to those in need, and inspiring others to follow a path of service and faith.
