Jocelyn Brewer straight from Oz bringing a very timely and topical conversation about tech, social media and digital nutrition, as we first discussed in 2018. To be fair this is quite astonishing that we are discussing this in todays world if we were to look at this from the lens of 'what didn't change' And so lets talk youth and child mental health, the dreaded 'device', and child development rather than the child, the time, and the punishments often dished out in respect of family dynamics. Digital orphans.. want to know more? Listen in and find out why Jocelyn has yet another stunning way to describe the generations in the digital space. 20% of her Tech Use agreement: - Co-design your family's tech use agreement: https://digitalnutrition.mykajabi.com...

I'm joined by Dean Burnett who is a proper Neuroscientist with a background in lecturing in the domain of mental health...so he knows what he's on about when it comes to the topic of addiction, and whether smartphone addiction is a real thing. Hint: it's not.
I asked Dean onto the show because he's written a new book called "why your parents are hung up on your phone and what to do about it" aimed at the teens who are the subject matter of much of the current narrative surrounding this issue.
Dean is a writer for the BBC science focus magazine and he used ot write for The Guardian helping people understand how brains affect us in the real world and so his latest book is discussed here at length. Dean recently appeared on a BBC Sunday morning show and was not given the time to explain about the current 'chicken little' of smartphone panic about them being an addiction so I asked him on the podcast to tell us about it... spoiler is you will learn some neuroscience about this clinical diagnosis and it might just change your mind = Neuroplasticity (not sorry- this is my small neuro-nerd joke here)
Go grab a coffee and listen in, as this is a most excellent podcast to begin my first video version here on Spotify. So I'm calling it a new season so here we go!
You can find Dean on social media talking about his work, cat and dog under the handle @garwboy and his website is www.deanburnett.com
In today's episode I sit down with my good friend and esteemed colleague Kathleen Sinclair who has written the book F*ck aging. She is an incredibly wise colleague and she's talking all things tech, aging, kicking the second half of your life with gusto, and what you can help yourself with. Kathleen is almost 80 and is not 'growing old gracefully' as the saying goes. She's growing bold! with purpose, passion, and poise, she’s making the most of every moment. Listen, learn and take some of her advice, and get strong after 50. Enjoy life to the fullest and the tools you can use to help yourself along the way.... Whether you're 50, 60, or beyond, Kathleen's advice is sure to inspire you to live with more gusto and vitality. It's about growing bolder, not older! Don’t miss this empowering conversation!

Today is a discussion with a friend and colleague in the space of child sexual abuse online where we once again take a look at the approaches used in the removal of this kind of material to protect children online.
The discussion take us on a broad approach to the reporting of, classifications of child sexual abuse, or exploitation, platform violations, adult sexual material, nudes, cartoon versions and the who, what and how of the way in which social media and other websites are removing these images, videos and other types of material.
Andy is great at explaining what parents and professionals working with children can keep their eyes and ears open to, having worked in/for social media companies in the past and has over 20 years of law enforcement experience in this domain.
We discuss 'that question' relating to banning, removing, delaying and more and have a long conversation bout the actual pragmatics about why we think this is wont work on a global level given that this is where the internet is. We consider the approaches of many of the internet safety spaces and what is being said in the realms of trust and safety and what the risks and dangers really are.
No spoilers but please do listen to this section if you have been led to believe that a ban or delay is the solution to a problem that is much more complicated than a simple 'don't' approach. Why parents are not aware of the technical issue at a tech, industry and government level.
We do talk about the great work that social media channels are taking to address some of the issues that are being discussed in todays session, and we put out a plea to the whole of the industries and techn companies to come together in a way that allows us to address the societal issues.
We (and I most certainly say wholeheartedly) duly request that we put the children and vulnerable in the centre of our conversations with the interest of the children and vulnerable as the main focus of the conversation.
For me the last 10-15 mins of this conversation are perhaps the most important in the whole sector of keeping children and vulnerable people safe online.
THIS episode is soooo exciting; I love being able to tell people about tech that is positive and this episode explains when gaming gets to the heart of helping people and helping them help themselves. This is gaming for good, WRIT LARGE! Meet Ryan Douglas, he is the founder and therapy designer who has been in this space for a long time and explains here about working with DeepWell DTx who bring you the game called Zengence in VR!!! (insert happy dance emote). I cannot stress enough how exciting the game is, what is has been designed for and how this is really really crafted to meet the needs of people who need games like this. The game has elements of physiological movement, breathing, rhythm and yep, accuracy and the fun part of an action game. Ryan explains about the science behind this game and the exciting part of why this game is so good at achieving what it sets out to do. I am going to be using this in therapy sessions, and personally and I get to show this off to a very large bunch of professionals this very weekend (at the time of episode launch) Go buy the game on the Oculus Q2 Q3 and its available NOW!!
In todays "uncomfortable" for some people, conversation i am joined by two of my favourite colleagues in the space of Psychosexual Therapy, Sexology and the world of relationships. We have been discussing many of the issues on todays episode for a number of years, so I decided to record our conversation to bring you what "really" happens in a sex therapy session [contrary to the people who do not practice ethically, or lawfully but thats not today conversation but could be another episode soon]. We discuss shame and the current narratives around porn which often prevent people discussing this. Why sex is not all bad, why we need to have an open mind (and ears) to the qualifiers of SOME people, SOME of the time have a problem with porn, sex and relationships BUT NOT ALL people will become dependent on it. We discuss how the finger pointing at sex and porn leaves young people with little knowledge about what sex is and so porn might just be the way they learn. We discuss the positive side of porn, yes there are positives which are about allowing people to explore their own bodies. We discuss shame, attachment injuries and how we protect ourselves by engaging in behaviours that are there to help us self soothe. How Masturbation has been demonised by the grown ups with frightening and scary shame based narratives which result in terrified children. We talk about "anti masturbation" organisations, we deconstruct the myths of touching versus 'outcome' and why this is often attributed to the addictive nomenclature, which we then talk about as an aetiology of harm to clients when used as a 'stick with which to bash them' . We cover so many topics, in depth (oh la la) and with many years of working in the space of psychosexual issues. NOTE: the sexual offending pathway research looks at differing routes to harm and I am aware of the correlation between problematic use of porn and offending and that is not discussed today. the reflection on THE pathway is relevant to those of you listening and watching who are not offenders and have shame associated with porn viewing or sexual dysfunction that is not harming children. In todays timely episode we are talking "Unlocked" the REAL science of screens, smartphones and more with Professor Pete Etchells, a Science Communicator (a role he discusses in his book) who has been steeped in this domain for a very long time. His research is broad and deep and takes a sensible, I repeat sensible look at the world of what smartphones and devices and use really does show us over time. And yes, that newest 'ban' is discussed in depth as to where the practicalities and panic are being drawn from. To the haters his work is not underpinned by 'funded from big tech' which is a common retort to the work in the UK.This is longer than usual episode because we needed to take stock of the Chicken Little panic and reactive call to get rid of something that is an essential part of our lives, and how we can think about how to protect children from harms online, but... thinking sensibly and with research from a position from someone who has taken the time to deeply read the research and can describe what the findings really mean. We take a tour of the work Pete has been involved in from VVG to the current landscape and beyond with so much critical thinking in this conversation. I LOVED this chat and hope you do too, because we want our children to think critically about the content they see online... and that starts with us the adults!you can find Professor Pete here where you will find some great threads and thinking about this space on twitter/X : @ PeteEtchells and the same for IG

Online safety campaigner and advisor to the Molly Rose foundation In this eye-opening video, Andy Burrows exposes the shocking reality of online risks faced by children and teens today. Drawing upon years of experience working at the NSPCC, Andy reveals startling statistics that highlight the urgent need to protect young people in the digital age. Key topics covered: 0:00 - The awareness of online risks among children 1:05 - The importance of creating a safe space for disclosure 1:31 - How targeted advertisements ruthlessly exploit children for profit 1:59 - Using metaphors to understand the insidious nature of online threats Andy emphasises that while children are all too aware of the dangers they face online, many struggle to disclose their experiences out of fear. He stresses the critical role supportive adults play in fostering a culture where children feel empowered to seek help. Through powerful analogies, like comparing targeted ads to personalized billboards in "Minority Report", Andy illustrates how product design has been weaponized against children. Parents, he argues, would be terrified if they truly grasped the extent of this exploitation. This video is a wake-up call for anyone concerned about child safety in the digital world. By breaking the silence and confronting these issues head-on, we can work towards creating safer online spaces for the next generation. https://andyburrows.substack.com/ here you will find the substack writings mentioned in the episode! #onlinesafety #safetyandtechnology #cybersafety About Cath Catherine Knibbs Online Harms and CyberPsychology - 30 years Consultant, Speaker & Educator, Psychotherapist, PHD Join Newsletter https://www.childrenandtech.co.uk/ Watch: TedX “Bodies, Brains and Technology: The Real Social Dilemma” on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRX_DWo3KPs The Polyvagal Motorway of wellness with brain and body visuals https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGBv1KrJ5Pk Websites www.childrenandtech.co.uk www.catherineknibbs.co.uk www.privacy4.co.uk Social media Instagram https://www.instagram.com/nibzy_5.0/ LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/catherine-knibbs-frsa-human-behaviour-technologist-2ba67b52/ Twitter https://twitter.com/nibzy Facebook https://www.facebook.com/people/Online-Harms-Cyber-Trauma-Young-People/100063745772632/ Books written by Catherine Knibbs Children, Technology and Healthy Development Online Harms and CyberTrauma Children and Sexual-based Online Harms

A hot topic right now... Artificial Intellignce. and yes we jumped on the bandwagon, But.. how is the crossover into the use of this technology by therapists, counsellors and psychologists and what will this mean for the profession?
What or when will this cause problems and issues and if so what types?
Who is responsible for the education, caretaking and guidance in this space for professions such as those who offer talking therapy and how is the information shared in those spaces protected? And from what?
There are no complete and robust answers yet as the technology advances and so this is likely to be one of many conversations taking place and today im joined by Meg Moss (policy at NCPS) and Rory Lees-Oakes (Big boss at Counselling Tutor) to do just that
Listen in and expand your thinking around the ethical dilemmas here!
In this episode, we will discuss the issue of missing children and how we can learn to recognise the signs. Our conversation will delve into what exactly "missing" means and why it can be difficult to define. We will also explore the necessary steps for filing a report and why this is crucial in finding a missing person.
We are joined by Caroline Humer, a global child protection expert, who will shed light on the overlap between runaway children and those who are exploited. We will also examine why the first 24 hours are critical when it comes to locating a missing child.
Missing children is an urgent matter that requires immediate action, so let's dive into the discussion and learn how we can all play a role in keeping our communities safe. So, if you want to understand more about this issue, make sure to keep reading! #MissingChildren #ChildProtection #ActFast
Im joined by Rory Lees-Oakes once more to discuss how times have changed since we last spoke a few years ago, about online professionalism. Rory has just written this chapter for the recently released book: Cybersecurity and Data Protection for practitioners via Routledge publishers. (you can buy your copy on all good book retailer sites too)
We discuss high end Psychologists who have been reprimanded (of sorts) and how therapy clients may well see the values, politics or other public posts that the professsionals make online and where does that leave the therapeutic relationship?
What has Micheal Douglas and Falling Down got to do with this?
listen in to find out!
WELCOME BACK!!
after writing two books which are due out this month and next I went off air... the good news, I'm now writing another book but intend to keep some of these episodes going because they are timeless pieces of the space online. Anyway back to the guest this time:
A discussion with my colleague Richard (from the world online-safety) about the world that young men find themselves growing up in, where the narrative can be harmful to experiences and understandings of masculinity and why this isn't always toxic. Why martial arts has formed much of a growing trend in managing emotions and discipline in is truest form and why Richard Pomfrett is determined to work with young men in his new program where he educates boys about their travels into manhood A fantastic exploration through a deep dive conversation. Enjoy!
With Perry Carpenter: Chief Evangelist! Author of: Transformational Security Awareness. I know many therapists are scared of tech, many can find it overwhelming and so I decided to speak with one of the most comprehensive communicators in the field of security awareness. One who shares my passion for the overlap between human and tech, human behaviour and those darn errors of judgment and mistakes we make with tech.
In this episode, we tackle why sole traders are often out of the loop of cybersecurity and why this large topic area can be easily accessible and how to tame the monster! Perry is eloquent in his approach and we have many themes that overlap in terms of why we do what we do, and Perry brings lots of overarching models and theories to the table. This is quite the episode! Do take a look at Perry's book, and the company he reefers to; KnowB4 https://www.knowbe4.com and see why I was soooo stoked to speak with him.. I reckon there are another 40+ conversations I could have with him!

Season 4 kicks off without the long intro: This about getting to the talk immediately!
Its an episode taking an amazing dive into a subject that is going to create a double-take for some people. I'm joined today my Michelle Ching, whom I met on Instagram where she was discussing the Endocannabinoid system with another podcaster. It's one of my favourite topics to discuss in terms of the wisdom of the body and the capabilities our cells have to regulate us in trauma and threat responses and flow!
Its a widely misunderstood system and one that often gets a bad wrap when you discover that its the same biological process associated with CBD, and THC. If you don't know what these are? Then listen in!!
Hint this is not a chat about cannabis.
Firstly we begin with a look at the western medical system and why we both now work, speak and exist in the world of holistic and co-operative healthcare, from there
00:05 We begin!
06:00 Mental health and coaching, self and purpose.

36:00 - gaming, fun and biases of the public (and some academics)
47:00 - Neil Strauss (and others) and the PUA community and why this is trauma not sex addiction.

See you in season 4!
