Episode 14: Investigating Homicide with Rod

Rod Wilson joined Victoria Police at the age of 18 years old back in 1976. Rod would spend 43 years as a police officer, 13 of which as a homicide detective before moving through the ranks to superintendent.

 Rod has arrested a lot of offenders in his time, one of which was Paul Denyer, the frankston serial killer who in 1993 murdered 3 young women. During this time Denyer killed 18 year old Elizabeth Stevens walking home from the bus stop, 22 year old Deborah Fream who was out getting milk for her 12 day old son and 17 year old Natalie Russll who was walking home from school.

 We reflect on Rod’s career and what it’s like to investigate murders from started the investigation through to ultimately putting hand cuffs on the culprit.

As emergency service workers we are often thrust in to high pressure situations requiring clear thinking and swift actions, which may result in someone living or dying. Leigh Anderson is no stranger to this after spending 15 years working as a frontline paramedic.

 

This exposure led Leigh to researching stress and then collating this information in his book 'The Paramedic Mindset'. This book aims giving us the tools and skills to maintain high performance and clear thinking during these stressful events.

 

In this episode Leigh and I discuss different aspects of stress such as interviews, the difficulty of being new to an emergency service role and dealing with complex emergency scenes.

Episode 8: Policing and Firefighting with Brad

As Brad puts it, he has been collecting uniforms for most of his career. Starting off in the Australian Army, Brad was deployed to various locations before discharging and joining Victoria Police. During his time in general duties his hard work lead him on to the critical incident response team before again changing uniforms for the final time. Now Brad is a firefighter for Fire Rescue Victoria and his story proves that if you persevere and work hard you can achieve your goals.

 

Whilst working full time Brad runs his own business POLICEFIT, which specialises in preparing people physically for the entry requirements to emergency services and also assists those already in a frontline role maintain themselves physically in order to keep performing out on the road.

I learnt a lot from Brad and I’m sure there’s something for everyone in this episode!

In this episode we take a look at firefighting. Jack took us through the first couple of months at the fire academy through to qualifying and coming out on the road. He took us in to the mind of a firefighter when arriving at car accidents and fires and what it's like being in a 600 degree building when the roof starts collapsing.


Jack is also an active member of the fire service rugby league side where he has had some awesome experiencing all on work time. This was an awesome episode and I hope you enjoy!
