About this show: Many years ago I realized that i had built my identity around being "confused" and "broken," and I often compensated for it with humor and other things. Now I see those compensations as tools to use vs them using me. I went through deep personal development work, a divorce, and periods of depression. Eventually, I realized that if I wanted a different life, I had to change my identity. I created a mission for myself: to become a catalyst who helps people live meaningful lives.
Along the way, I used various strategies to shift my mindset. I learned to associate more with acknowledgments than with failures, and I committed to creating and living from a new identity. I also had to confront challenges like dealing with ADD, feeling disconnected from my body, and learning the importance of being fully present in the moment. Biofeedback training, participating in men’s groups, and developing what I call a "compassionate observer" were all critical parts of my journey.
I’ve come to believe that the challenges I faced in childhood, though painful, were actually gifts. They helped me become a more intuitive and effective coach. I place a strong emphasis on understanding people's "model of the world" and focus my coaching on creating minimum change for maximum return on investment over time. In the end, I’ve found that living from a mission naturally fuels my own ongoing personal development.

This is one of many stories from my experiences traveling to Japan. I visited twice: first, to see my good friend Mike Saleeby shortly after college, and many years later to visit another friend, Richard Grassi. This particular story focuses on my visit to Mike Saleeby right after college. The accompanying image shows me teaching one of his Japanese classes, demonstrating a paper-folding technique that was unfamiliar in Japan and that I learned from my mother. On the 19th of September I was honored to be on a panel discussion about how to reduce suicide in our society. I chose to focus my contribution on my experience with men's work over the years and how over 70% of the suicides are by men but we seldom have a discussion on that specifically. our society will tolerate a discussion about both genders or just about women but seldom do you hear just the conversation about the biggest group that commits suicide. this podcast focuses on both life and business and since this month is focusing on suicide prevention I felt this was a timely topic.
