1. Testing the Lunar Module (LM): One of the primary objectives of Apollo 9 was to test the lunar module, named "Spider," in the vacuum of space. 2. Spacewalks and Extravehicular Activity (EVA): Rusty Schweickart performed an EVA from the lunar module, testing the Portable Life Support System (PLSS) that would be used on the Moon. 1. Demonstration of crew, spacecraft, and mission support performance for translunar and lunar-orbit operations. This was critical in preparation for the eventual Moon landing.
2. Evaluation of the performance of the Saturn V launch vehicle in a lunar trajectory. This was only the second crewed flight of the massive Saturn V.
3. Return high-resolution photographs of the lunar surface. These were important for scouting landing sites for future missions.

• "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." - This reading from Genesis was meant to provide a reflective, poignant moment for listeners on Earth, emphasizing the universal nature of the mission.
• "We are now approaching lunar sunrise, and for all the people back on Earth, the crew of Apollo 8 has a message that we would like to send to you. In the beginning, God created the Heaven and the Earth." - This was part of their historic Christmas Eve broadcast.
