Theatre · The Creative Process: Acting, Directing, Writing & Behind the Scenes Conversations
Acting, Directing, Writing & Behind the Scenes Conversations · Creative Process Original Series
“I would encourage you, as I do if you're an actor, to know your own equipment, know your own psychology, and use the great teachers that are synthesized in my favorite teacher's book, Moss, who I studied with later. There is a book called Intent to Live that distills down Uta Hagen, Stella Adler, Bobby Lewis, and Stanislavski. The great teachers at the Group Theatre believed that the method needed to be altered to be constructive rather than destructive to artists. David Milch's mind is so singular because he uses language in a way that defines character. That's what all good writers do: use language to get to the heart of something. He would use malapropisms to make up words, and Milch loved playing with that. As someone who played the love interest of such a unique character as Andy Sipowicz, I found it fascinating. Through Sylvia and David Milch's understanding, his wife humanized him. Sipowicz was portrayed as an addict, a very flawed human who had many addictions. David Milch is now suffering from Alzheimer's, so we won't get his words again. However, the words that he has to offer are timeless because he studied Robert Penn Warren and had many mentors throughout his vast literary education. That is key. I love speaking Noël Coward’s words. As a bon vivant, he wrote musically, to charm us and amuse us. So going and reading Noël Coward is important for actors to learn those cadences and the musicality of a certain era.  Of course, Shakespeare comes to mind. I also think of the female playwrights who delight me now, whether it's Caryl Churchill. She has that singular mind and plays with gender so well, challenging gender norms. Seeing ‘Cloud Nine’ when I was in college blew my mind open because men were playing women and women were playing men. Of course, Shakespeare was doing it too, but her work felt more intimate; it was in a small theater. That’s another thing I encourage actors and audiences to do: go see things in small theaters. See it up close because that will excite you and help you learn the craft.” Sharon Lawrence is an acclaimed actress best known for her Emmy-nominated, SAG Award-winning role as ADA Sylvia Costas on NYPD Blue. She has delivered memorable performances in Desperate Housewives, Monk, Law & Order: SVU, Criminal Minds, Shameless, and Queen Sugar. On stage, she’s earned praise for roles in The Shot (a one-woman play about the owner/publisher of the Washington Post, Katharine Graham), Orson’s Shadow, and A Song at Twilight. Shestarred in Broadway revivals of Cabaret, Chicago, and Fiddler on the Roof. Her recent work includes the neo-Western series Joe Pickett, opposite Michael Dorman, and the films Solace with Anthony Hopkins and The Bridge Partner. Lawrence is also a dedicated advocate, serving on the boards of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, WeForShe, and Heal the Bay, and is a former Chair of the Women In Film Foundation.

    Sherlock Holmes Short Stories
    Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
    http://www.adfreebooks.com - 500+ audiobooks, all ad free

Although the Sherlock Holmes canon traditionally consists of four novels and 56 short stories written by Arthur Conan Doyle, there are many Sherlock Holmes stories outside the canon. Most of these noncanonical stories were written by authors other than Doyle, but there are four short stories about Holmes written by Doyle that are nonetheless excluded from the canon, for various reasons.  This album consists of these four noncanonical stories. The first story, "The Field Bazaar", was first published in 1896 in a special issue of a University of Edinburgh student newspaper called The Student. Doyle wrote this very brief story to support a fundraising event at the university, his alma mater, but most scholars consider the story to be a parody and therefore not part of the canon. The second and third stories, "The Lost Special" and "The Man with the Watches", were both published in The Strand Magazine in 1898 and both feature mysteries involving trains. These two stories are not part of the canon because neither story mentions Holmes by name, although literary scholars have proposed that the unnamed "amateur reasoner" in "The Lost Special" and the unnamed "well-known criminal investigator" in "The Man with the Watches" are intended to be Holmes, and this theory is accepted for the purposes of this LibriVox album. Doyle wrote the fourth story, "How Watson Learned the Trick", for a miniature book that was placed in Queen Mary's Dolls' House, a dollhouse built for Queen Mary in the 1920s that housed a tiny library featuring works by several famous authors of the day, the contents of which were published in 1924 for public consumption. Considered a companion piece to "The Field Bazaar" due to both stories consisting entirely of conversations between Holmes and Watson over breakfast, "How Watson Learned the Trick" is similarly excluded from the canon on the grounds of being a parody.

The Adventures of Philip Marlowe - OTR
    Philip Marlowe
The Adventures of Philip Marlowe" is a classic American radio detective series that brought to life one of the most enduring characters in crime fiction. The character of Philip Marlowe, a hard-boiled private detective, was created by Raymond Chandler and first appeared in his 1939 novel "The Big Sleep." The character's popularity led to the radio series, which became one of the most famous detective shows of its time.

The radio adaptation of "The Adventures of Philip Marlowe" first aired in 1947 on the NBC network, before moving to CBS where it continued until 1951. Over the years, the title character was voiced by different actors, with Van Heflin initially taking the role. However, it was Gerald Mohr's portrayal of Marlowe, starting in 1948, that is most often remembered and praised for its definitive capturing of the character's essence. Mohr's voice and delivery matched the tough, cynical, yet principled demeanor that Chandler's writing embodied.

Set in the gritty and morally complex world of Los Angeles, the show followed Marlowe as he navigated through mysteries, encountered various criminals, and dealt with the darker sides of human nature. Each episode presented a new case, ranging from simple missing persons to complex murder investigations, involving deceit, intrigue, and sometimes romance. The stories were rich with Chandler's signature sharp wit, hard-boiled dialogue, and vivid descriptions of the LA setting.

The production values of "The Adventures of Philip Marlowe" were high, with atmospheric music, sound effects, and quality writing contributing to the show's immersive experience. The series is noted for its contribution to the noir genre, painting a vivid picture of mid-20th century Los Angeles through its storytelling."The Adventures of Philip Marlowe" enjoyed popularity during its run and has since become a beloved piece of classic radio and detective fiction history. Its episodes continue to be sought after by fans of the genre and are celebrated for their storytelling, character development, and production quality. The series contributed significantly to the lore of Philip Marlowe, solidifying the detective's place as a central figure in American crime fiction.
