What the Heck?
Episode 174- Dispelling the Fear of Witches

Welcome to What The Heck season 4! This podcast explores unexplained phenomena using stories gathered from various sources, then applies an academic research method to find theories and solutions for each one. So far, we've been unsuccessful in finding any concrete answers, but a few of the stories we've covered have been solved. Today, in the final episode of the season, we're diving head first into the history, myths, and modern views of witchcraft. The last deep dive episode was way back at the end of Season 1. This year, I took on an even bigger challenge- making the huge amount of information about witchcraft through the ages into an easily available resource. We're all over the place this week, looking at definitions, comparing beliefs, unpacking fictional depictions, and looking at the very real fear of witches across the Western World. Strap in, it's a long and bumpy ride! Where did witchcraft come from? Why was it so feared that it was made illegal? What happened during the witch trials? What's true and what's made up? Listen in to find out!

What the Heck?
Episode 172- This Station Feels Illegal

Welcome to What The Heck season 4! This podcast explores unexplained phenomena using stories gathered from various sources, then applies an academic research method to find theories and solutions for each one. So far, we've been unsuccessful in finding any concrete answers, but a few of the stories we've covered have been solved. Today, we're looking at the Arizona Ghost Radio. A short episode this week, it's difficult to find much information on this mystery. What we know is that there's a mysterious radio station that can be found in Arizona. It's not a regular radio station- there are no adverts, just music and a sign off every hour. Some people say that it has mysterious messages that play, but that's simply not true. What music plays on this station? Where can it be traced to? Who is behind this mysterious station? Listen in to find out!

What the Heck?
Episode 171- Failed Twice By Police

Welcome to What The Heck season 4! This podcast explores unexplained phenomena using stories gathered from various sources, then applies an academic research method to find theories and solutions for each one. So far, we've been unsuccessful in finding any concrete answers, but a few of the stories we've covered have been solved. Today, we're looking at the disappearance and death of Mitrice Richardson. Not much can be found about Mitrice's early life, which doesn't matter much for this story, which starts in 2009 when Mitrice was 24. After visiting a Malibu restaurant and failing to pay, she was arrested and then released in the early hours of the morning. With no transport home to Los Angeles and nowhere to stay, reports of Mitrice's wanderings were soon reported. Before the day ended, Mitrice disappeared. The next year, her remains would be found in a remote area, near where she was last spotted. Why did Mitrice get arrested? Why was she released with no arrangements made? Who was misdirecting and complicating the investigation? Listen in to find out!

What the Heck?
Episode 170- Using Our Skills

Welcome to What The Heck season 4! This podcast explores unexplained phenomena using stories gathered from various sources, then applies an academic research method to find theories and solutions for each one. So far, we've been unsuccessful in finding any concrete answers, but a few of the stories we've covered have been solved. Today, we're looking at the Atlanta Ripper. Atlanta, Georgia has some fascinating history. At the head of the Civil Rights movement, and much earlier than the rest of the US, it was a hub for commerce and manufacturing. That changed in 1906, when a race riot broke out. Soon afterwards, perhaps just 3 years, maybe 5 years, a killer was on the loose, murdering black women just because they could. Over the course of several years, the murders stacked up, and a few suspects were arrested for their alleged crimes. How did Atlanta become Atlanta? Who was the first person to point a finger? Why has this case not been solved? Listen in to find out!

What the Heck?
Episode 167- Gravity Schmavity

Welcome to What The Heck season 4! This podcast explores unexplained phenomena using stories gathered from various sources, then applies an academic research method to find theories and solutions for each one. So far, we've been unsuccessful in finding any concrete answers, but a few of the stories we've covered have been solved. Today, we're looking at Gravity. This theory, universally taught as a fact, was first proposed in the 17th Century by Isaac Newton. It didn't come from nowhere though, since we'd been talking about space and how it worked for millenia. It has a long history with some very famous names from the field of science in it. What did Newton's theory miss out on? When does Einstein join in? Do we have answers yet? Listen in to find out!

This podcast explores unexplained phenomena using stories gathered from various sources, then applies an academic research method to find theories and solutions for each one. So far, we've been unsuccessful in finding any concrete answers, but a few of the stories we've covered have been solved. Today, we're looking at Agamemnon Counterpart. In 2006, a mysterious video was uploaded to YouTube containing surreal and Eldritch visuals and some terrifying audio. This video has been looked at multiple times in the almost 20 years since then. What the Heck?
Creature Feature 110- Blinding Lights in the Night

Welcome to What The Heck's Creature Feature! These episodes release on Saturdays and look at folklore and cryptids from around the world! The same academic style is applied to these episodes, but they look at history and eyewitness reports before describing the creature of the week! A lot of the time, theories are a bit more scarce than the main episodes, but the content is still just as interesting.

This week we're looking at the Van Meter Visitor. In 1903, the town of Van Meter, Iowa, was attacked over the course of three days by a huge, flying creature. Every night, at 1AM, a bright light would wake someone up and they'd go to investigate. On two of the nights, the victims shot at the creature, not even leaving a scratch. What did the town do to stop the creature? Could it have been a hoax? Where is the creature now? Listen in to find out!

What the Heck?
Episode 165- Hysteria Or A Real Problem?

Welcome to What The Heck season 4! This podcast explores unexplained phenomena using stories gathered from various sources, then applies an academic research method to find theories and solutions for each one. So far, we've been unsuccessful in finding any concrete answers, but a few of the stories we've covered have been solved. Today, we're looking at the Mad Gasser of Mattoon. In 1944, over the course of just over 2 weeks, the people of Mattoon, Illinois were attacked by a man who filled their houses with paralyzing gas. The police had to involve the FBI, but neither managed to catch the culprit. The police eventually said it was hysteria, but people disagreed with that decision. Who was attacked? Why were the police so intent on saying it wasn't real? What do people think happened instead? Listen in to find out!

Creature Feature 109- The Sky is Like An Ocean

Welcome to What The Heck's Creature Feature! These episodes release on Saturdays and look at folklore and cryptids from around the world! The same academic style is applied to these episodes, but they look at history and eyewitness reports before describing the creature of the week! A lot of the time, theories are a bit more scarce than the main episodes, but the content is still just as interesting.

This week we're looking at Flying Rods. Also known as Skyfish, these creatures were first captured on film in 1994. While the man who first captured them on film says they may not be extraterrestrial in nature, UFOlogists think they could be. Videographers and scientists don't agree though, and have looked into the phenomenon themselves. What is a Flying Rod? How did we only notice them in the early 1990s? What do experts say they are? Listen in to find out!

What the Heck?
Episode 164- That Sign Can't Stop Me, I Can't Read

Welcome to What The Heck season 4! This podcast explores unexplained phenomena using stories gathered from various sources, then applies an academic research method to find theories and solutions for each one. So far, we've been unsuccessful in finding any concrete answers, but a few of the stories we've covered have been solved. Today, we're looking at the script of the Indus Valley Civilisation. Rediscovered in the 1920s, the Indus Valley Civilisation spanned a larger area than Ancient Mesopotamia. They traded with the Mesopotamians, and may have gotten the idea of writing from them. The problem is that we can't decipher all of the signs for the language. How many signs are in the language? How close are we to deciphering it? Did this language become something else? Listen in to find out!

This week we're looking at the Dover Demon. Over 2 nights in 1977, 3 teenagers saw a creature in Dover, Massachusetts. Some people dismissed it as a prank, or a baby moose, but others were convinced it was some kind of monster. Our cryptozoologist buddy Loren Coleman makes a return in the story and theories today, because he was one of the lead investigators for this case. Where was the creature spotted? What happened to it? What did Loren Coleman do in his investigation? Listen in to find out!

What the Heck?
Episode 163- Head Master

Welcome to What The Heck season 4! This podcast explores unexplained phenomena using stories gathered from various sources, then applies an academic research method to find theories and solutions for each one. So far, we've been unsuccessful in finding any concrete answers, but a few of the stories we've covered have been solved. Today, we're looking at the Moai of Easter Island. These heads were there long before we called the island Easter Island, back when it was simply known as Rapa Nui. Since then though, the heads entered a state of disrepair. Recent surveys of the known heads counts them in the thousands though, but we don't really know what they were for. What do scholars think they were for? Why do some of them face out to sea? WHow did they even get there? Listen in to find out!

What the Heck?
Creature Feature 107- A Glow In New Zealand

Welcome to What The Heck's Creature Feature! These episodes release on Saturdays and look at folklore and cryptids from around the world! The same academic style is applied to these episodes, but they look at history and eyewitness reports before describing the creature of the week! A lot of the time, theories are a bit more scarce than the main episodes, but the content is still just as interesting.

This week we're looking at Phosphorus Jack. Following the Auckland Ghost Scare at the turn of the 20th Century, New Zealand was plagued by sightings of a glowing, ghostly man. He mostly targeted women and children across the country. His appearance was constantly changing, but one thing stayed constant- a phosphorescent glow somewhere on his body. When did the sightings start? Where was he spotted? Could this be one massive hoax? Listen in to find out!

What the Heck?
Episode 162- There is no Mystery Here

Welcome to What The Heck season 4! This podcast explores unexplained phenomena using stories gathered from various sources, then applies an academic research method to find theories and solutions for each one. So far, we've been unsuccessful in finding any concrete answers, but a few of the stories we've covered have been solved. Today, we're looking at the death of Maricica Cornici. She was born in 1982 and was abandoned by her mother after the death of her father, which led to her horrific abuse growing up. By 2001, she seemed to have come out of that situation to make a life for herself, planning to move from Romania to Germany with an old friend. When she went to visit her friend and convince her to join the move to Germany, she was caught up in another horrific cycle of abuse that ultimately led to her death. What happened in Maricica's childhood? Why was the visit to a friend so terrible? What happened to Maricia in her last days? Listen in to find out!

What the Heck?
Creature Feature 106 - A Fabricated Sighting

Welcome to What The Heck's Creature Feature! These episodes release on Saturdays and look at folklore and cryptids from around the world! The same academic style is applied to these episodes, but they look at history and eyewitness reports before describing the creature of the week! A lot of the time, theories are a bit more scarce than the main episodes, but the content is still just as interesting.

This week we're looking at Ahool. Native to the rainforest of Java, Indonesia, these huge, batlike creatures have been intertwined with folklore for hundreds of years. They are classed as cryptids though, and there is a single famous sighting of them. Things aren't what they seem when looking a little deeper though. What is the Ahool? Why is the sighting not reliable? What could be happening here? Listen in to find out!

What the Heck?
Episode 161- An Ancient Pandemic

Welcome to What The Heck season 4! This podcast explores unexplained phenomena using stories gathered from various sources, then applies an academic research method to find theories and solutions for each one. So far, we've been unsuccessful in finding any concrete answers, but a few of the stories we've covered have been solved. Today, we're looking at the Athens Plague. In the 5th Century BCE, Athens was in the middle of a war. The people of the surrounding area, Attica, had taken refuge in the city, but they were suffering from a mysterious illness calles Athens Plague. We wouldn't know anything about it if we didn't have a man called Thucydides to write an extensive account as he lived through this early pandemic. What was the situation, and why was it so complicated? What symptoms did people show? What do modern medical professionals think it could have been? Listen in to find out!
