Episode 26- The Future Of OTT: Have We Seen This Movie Before?

It seemed like the golden age of streaming would never end. Increased competition, and soaring operational costs, among other factors, have halted a trend that has been shaping the entertainment landscape for the last decade. With different platforms shifting to ad-based models and refocusing their strategy, we are now entering an era that finds other players battling the same challenges faced by linear television 20 years ago.

I'm joined by Nathalie Lethbridge, founder of Atonik Digital, to discuss what's happening in the entertainment industry and what lies ahead.

In this episode we explore the following topics:

  • The future of consolidation in the Media and Entertainment (M&E) landscape
  • The different positioning and strategies of the segment's leading players
  • Consumer trends and their evolution during an adverse macro scenario
  • Future growth opportunities and content evolution

Episode 25- Treading Water: Revisiting "Waterworld"

As 2022 comes to an end, we still don't know if "Avatar: The Way of The Water" will recoup its original budget. This seemed like a great opportunity to revisit another Water-based production. A title that's synonymous with infamous and troubled productions. I'm talking about the  Kevin Costner vehicle, Waterworld. Released in the summer of 95, it was the most expensive blockbuster ever produced at the time, costing a whopping $175m. Trashed by critics and dubbed as "mad max with jet skis", the movie was deemed a box office bomb. To discuss the original version and the 3hr extended cut, I'm joined by Segundo Take's host  Antonio Araujo.

Episode 24- Just Like Paradise: Life at Spinster Records

Have you ever wondered what it's like to work at a record store? In this episode, I'll be talking to Kate Siamro from Spinster Records, located in Dallas, TX. We'll cover the good, the bad, and the ugly of working in a record store, how Generation Z is redefining music purchasing, the best spots in Dallas, and a whole lot about music.

I've also volunteered for an exclusive "episode" of Kate's very own reel show: "What I can judge about your date from the records they purchase".

Episode 23- Bite Harder: Revisiting "Jaws 2", "Jaws 3-D", and "Jaws: The Revenge"

There's nothing quite like enjoying the very best popcorn cinema has to offer on a hot summer day. And if audiences around the world have been able to enjoy this simple pleasure they have a Mr. Steven Spielberg and his movie "Jaws" to thank.

Much has been said and written about the 1975 summer blockbuster. However, I feel that there's not enough love and attention whenever the three sequels are mentioned.

In this episode, I'm joined by Rob Lane, from straight2vid, as we both aim to shine some light on the glorious cinematic experiences that are the "Jaws"' sequels and also how could they have been improved and reached new peaks in movie excellence.

Episode 22- The Oscars! 2022 Edition

It's that time of the year again: the end of another award season that culminates with the 94th Academy Awards. I'm joined by my good friend Duarte Mendonça to review the movies that made 2021, evaluate the nominees, including surprises and snubs, across 8 major categories in one of the quietest Oscar races in years.

We also discussed the relevance and importance of the Oscars in a landscape that continues to shift towards both international movies and with an increased focus on global film festivals such as Venice and Cannes and the role of the superhero blockbuster in the post-Covid big screen recovery.

Episode 21- John Carpenter

John Carpenter just turned 74 and what a better way to celebrate his birthday than to revisit his work as both a director and a composer. David from The Vinyl Score is this episode's guest. Together we will revisit 20+ years of rich filmography and music that put Carpenter on the director's pantheon of excellence.

We also took on a little creative challenge: We listened to all three "Lost Themes" albums, containing original non-soundtrack scores, and came up with movies that Carpenter could have directed. Jump ahead to 1:33:57 or  the 93.57-minute mark depending on which platform you are using for a great collaboration

Episode 14- The Silver Screen's Silver Lining

Many pundits were quick to write-off the big screen as yet another Covid casualty. In a year when cinema closures were the new normal and the world's biggest movie #boxoffice market drops 80% (!), it's hard to feel optimistic about the future of cinema venues.

Patrick von Sychowski, cinema guru and co-founder of celluloidjunkie, has some encouraging thoughts and a belief that the big screen's best days are still ahead. On the latest episode of my podcast, he voices his arguments for this "silver lining" view. We talked about:

-How Netflix was the movie theatre's biggest ally in 2020

-The premiumization of moviegoing

-Routes and scenarios for a comeback

We even geeked out on our admiration over 1980s glam metal and discussed the role of Helsinki, as the last bastion of hard rock.⁣
