TWiP Your Itinerary
Where is Your Itinerary?!
As you may have noticed, the Your Itinerary show on the TWiP Network featuring Rob Knight has been dormant for a while. So, I’ve got some good news, and of course, some bad news to tell you.

First, the bad news — Rob Knight has moved on from the show to focus on some other things. And though he’s still 100% a friend of — and loved by TWiP, he will no longer be hosting our Your Itinerary podcast.

The good news is, the show is not gone! In fact, We’ve taken this opportunity to revamp the whole thing, with a new format, a new host and some really exciting new content.

This new show will no longer be called Your Itinerary, rather it'll be called something entirely new and fresh. To get this new show, there’s no need to resubscribe if you’re already subscribed to Your Itinerary.

Look for new episodes to start appearing in this feed mid-to-late January. And leading up to the shows launch, myself and our mysterious new host will be revealing details about this exciting new addition to the TWiP Network.

Until then, keep traveling and keep shooting!

Jay Dickman is a storyteller
Jay Dickman is probably the guy you picture when you think “Travel Photographer”. Jay has been everywhere and he’s been telling stories with photographs longer than a lot of you have been alive!

Jay started as a newspaper photographer, won a Pulitzer Prize and ended up working for National Geographic. Like I said, he knows a thing or two about telling stories with photos!

I had a lot of fun meeting Jay and doing this interview, and I hope you enjoy it too!

Roman Kurywczak takes his photography personally.
Roman Kurywczak is a professional nature photographer and workshop leader based in New Jersey. Roman doesn’t wear the typical nature photographer uniform, and he generally marches to the beat of his own drum.

I think that’s why Roman has built such a loyal following for his tours and workshops. He makes great photos, he’s happy to help you make great photos and he doesn’t put on airs.

Roman’s "Roamin' with Roman" photo workshops feature small groups and subjects like landscapes, bird photography and shooting the Milky Way. It’s hard to beat a workshop where you will only share the instructor with THREE other photographers! Check out Roman’s workshops and join up if you have the chance!

Peyton Hale is not just a landscape photographer.
Peyton Hale is known for his beautiful landscape photography, but his work on the road over the last few years has turned his eye toward travel photography. Peyton is one of the trip leaders for the Giving Lens. He quickly realized during these trips that the people were often the most important subjects.
We all shoot what interests us. Some photographers start by shooting people, but some of us (I’m definitely in this camp) work our way into it. Peyton is still shooting beautiful landscapes, but he spends just as much time shooting portraits these days.
Be sure to check out the Giving Lens. It’s a great way to improve your photography and make a difference in people’s lives at the same time.

I’ll bet you’ve seen Levi Sim around. He can be found at most big photography events like Photoshop World and Out of Chicago. He is also a prolific contributor to PhotoFocus and co-host of the Lightroom Hangout with Rob Sylvan.

You are likely to remember Levi if you’ve met him because he is one of the nicest people I know. He’s one of those guys who always seems relaxed and glad to see you. I’m sure his demeanor is one of the reasons his portrait subjects generally seem happy and relaxed as well.

Making pictures on the road can be a stressful endeavor. Working for clients is hard enough without adding travel to the mix. Levi talks about how he handles his assignment work, including the gear he brings and how he packs.

I hope you enjoy the interview, and I hope you et the chance to meet Levi at an event near you!

Relics from behind the Iron Curtain.
I know the TWiP audience is familiar with Don Komarechka because of his frequent appearances on the mothership. Don is a photographer, educator and author who is known for shooting things that most of us never see. His book Sky Crystals: Unraveling the Mysteries of Snowflakes shows both his eye for beautiful images and his near super-human technical skill.
Don was telling me about his upcoming return trip to Bulgaria while we were both on TWiP, and I was blown away by his images of the crumbling Soviet buildings he showed me. Once again, Don had captured beautiful and unusual images of things you and I might never see otherwise.

Please watch the video podcast above so you can see the images. It truly looks like a movie set, and it makes me want to head for Eastern Europe!

Fine art wildlife photography.
Charles Glatzer is a wildlife photographer and workshop leader based in North Carolina. In person he is a no-nonsense guy who obviously has a firm grasp on the fundamentals of photography. His rapport with his students is founded on his years of teaching experience.

If you take a look at Charles’ work I think you’ll see that he is not just another wildlife photographer. His images demonstrate a grasp of light and composition that is usually reserved for fine art.

Chas is not satisfied with just capturing a sharp photo of an animal. He wants to show you the best possible representation of his subjects. Can you tell I’m a fan of his work?! On top of all that he’s a nice guy and I consider him a friend.

Be sure to visit Charles’ website to check out his images and workshops.

I don’t remember where I heard about lumoid.com, but I'll admit I wasn't very excited about it at first. I figured it was just another place to rent photo gear online until I saw that they also rented Phantom drones. I was intrigued! Upon further review I saw that this San Francisco based company has a few other unique things to offer.

Aarthi Ramamurthy is the founder CEO of lumoid.com. She gave me some interesting insight into how lumoid.com came about and how they differentiate themselves in the crowded field of photography equipment rental. I think things like their photo kits and shipping options make them a very interesting choice for renting photo gear.

Check out lumoid.com and try some new gear for your next adventure!

Your Itinerary 30: Out of Chicago with Chris Smith

Chris Smith is is definitely an authority on photographing the "Windy City"
I discovered Chris Smith's beautiful HDR images of downtown Chicago a few years ago, and he's been tearing it up since then! He is one of the founders of outofchicago.com. This photography blog is a wealth of information about photographing Chicago, post processing techniques and more. Chris and the other contributors to the site regularly host meetups, workshops and photo walks in Chicago.

Chris is also the author of the very popular Photographers Guide to Chicago. If you're planning a photo trip to Chicago you should definitely check it out!

Speaking of visiting Chicago... Chris is also the driving force behind the Out of Chicago Photography Conference. (I told you he's been busy!) This three-day event features classes and hands-on workshops with some really great photographers. This year's event will be June 26-28. Chris has generously offered my listeners a $100 discount on the conference as well! Just visit outofchicago.com/conference and use the discount code "TWiP".

Check out Chris' beautiful work and head up to the conference if you can fit it into your schedule!

Toronto Expert Bill Hertha
I have had a few local experts on Your itinerary so far, but not everyone sends me as much information as Bill Hertha! Bill is an amateur photographer and frequent traveler based in Toronto, Canada. He has supplied us with tons of useful tips, links for Toronto information and even a free ebook!
Bill’s website has great photos to be sure, but I really enjoyed the Projects/Studies page. Bill shares several self-assigned projects through descriptions and photos as he works through techniques that he wants to learn. Not everyone is so open with their creative process, and Bill does a great job of bringing us along on his ride.
I have included several of the links that Bill shared for Toronto information. Be sure to visit his website and download his free ebook while you’re at it!

Your Itinerary 28: On the Road with David M Byrne
David M Byrne really gets around
A lot of people travel and make pictures these days. Thanks to the internet we get to see more photos from around the world than ever before. These photos range from iPhone snapshots to compelling photographs that depict a place in a unique way. Many of David M Byrne's photos fall into the latter category.

David and I started our conversation on Twitter, which reminds me... If you would like to be a guest on the show to talk about your travels and photography please drop me a line on Twitter @youritinerary. You would be surprised how many guests I have met there. Now back to the post...

David is not a professional photographer or a full-time travel blogger. His blog at davidMbyrne.com is an ever-expanding collection of stories and photos from his travels around the world. He travels because he LIKES it, and that is strangely refreshing. His blog is not designed for SEO or internet marketing. He didn't start it to fund his travels. He just like to travel and wants to share the stories and pictures.

As you'll hear in the interview, David didn't set out to be a travel photographer. His photography has improved through practice and his own research. As you can see from his images below he has a real knack for composition and storytelling. Notice how he includes people in so much of his work? That makes a big difference in many of his photos.

Be sure to check out David's links below and I hope you enjoy the interview! I found David to be a lot of fun to talk to. Don't be surprised if you hear him again on Your Itinerary.

Teaching and Traveling with Darlene Hildebrandt
Darlene Hildebrandt loves to help people make better photographs. You probably know her from her frequent appearances on This Week in Photo or from her role as the editor of the Digital Photography School website. Darlene is also has her own photo education websites, including her main hub at Digital Photo Mentor.

Digital Photo Mentor has a TON of content to help you improve your photography. Darlene has her own articles and videos plus contributions from other photographers. There are a few premium products on the site, but the majority of the information is free.

Whether you want to improve your Photoshop skills, make better macro shots or anything in between, you can probably find what you’re looking for on Darlene’s site.

Darlene also leads destination photo workshops, and you can find links to them on the DPM site as well. I asked Darlene how she got started leading workshops and how she ended up blending a bit of charity work into her trips to Nicaragua. I love when photographers go out of their way to participate in the communities they visit, instead of simply photographing them from an outsider’s point of view.

Be sure to check out Darlene’s links below. I’m sure you will learn a lot when you do!

Travel Photo Tips with Joe Brady
Joe Brady is a guy you’re probably familiar with. Joe has created over two hundred video tutorials for many different photography products and techniques. You can find Joe talking about everything from color management to off-camera flash to landscape photography.

I received messages from a few listeners requesting more travel photography tips on the show, and I knew Joe would be a wealth of information. There is a lot that goes into making great photos. It’s important to have a good handle on the basics of exposure and composition, but a working knowledge of other settings like metering, flash, etc. can make a big difference in your work.

I hope you enjoy the show and pick up some techniques you can use on your next photography trip.

I want to share another link with you this week… I have the privilege of working with the Salvando Corazones girls shelter and safe house in Costa Rica. Salvando Corazones offers a home and opportunities to girls who have been victims of sex trafficking.

My colleague Rick Gerrity and I are on our way to help the shelter start a photography therapy program to give the girls a creative outlet and another way work through their issues. As parents ourselves, Rick and I jumped at the chance to help the shelter in any way we could. Thank you Panasonic USA for donating cameras for the shelter, and thanks to our friends at the Leaves & Lizards Volcano Cabin Retreat for providing us with room and board.

Your Itinerary 25: Travel with Wedding Pro William Innes

Wedding Photographer William Innes on Travel Photography.
Does a successful career as a wedding photographer make you a great travel photographer? If William Innes' work is any indication I'd say the answer is yes! You may have seen William speaking at big events like WPPI lately. The Los Angeles based photographer is widely known for his beautiful wedding photography, and he delivers inspiring presentations on the subject.

But that's not what we do here on Your Itinerary... I asked William to come on the show after I noticed the beautiful travel photography on his Instagram account. Turns out William gives great presentations on travel photography too! His vacation photos are fantastic, and you definitely get a sense that he's having a great time on the road. He exemplifies the idea that better travel experiences produce the best travel photos.

William and I are friends and I had a good time interviewing him, but I really found our conversation interesting. Especially his parallels between wedding photography and travel photography. I hope you enjoy the show as well.

Be sure to click William's links below and give us a review or a couple of stars on iTunes if you get a chance.

Travel and composition with Rick Sammon
If you're into photography and you use the Internet you have most likely run across my guest, Rick Sammon. Rick is a photography educator, author, podcast host, and general social media monster.
The one thing all of Rick's endeavors have in common is the desire to help folks make better photos. I've worked with Rick several times, and he literally never stops looking for teaching opportunities. He loves his job and it shows.
Composition and travel are two of the topics that Rick is best known for. He teaches Composition classes on Kelby Online Training. Rick even has and iOS app to help you improve your composition.
Rick is also on the road more than anyone I know, and that's saying something. He never stops moving! I'd say Rick is well qualified to talk to us about composition and travel photography.
Rick Sammon is a lot of fun to work with and learn from, and he's a good friend. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoy chatting with Rick. Check out his website for photos, apps, podcasts, workshops and more.

Your Itinerary 23: Professional Instagrammer Lauren Bath

Professional Instagrammer Lauren Bath.
Talk about a dream job! My guest this week is Australia’s first professional Instagrammer, Lauren Bath. Lauren gets paid to travel around the world, photograph amazing locations and share images on her phone!

Lauren’s work shows the beauty, fun and excitement of the places she visits. It’s no wonder that tourism boards from Canada to Singapore are seeking her services to spread the word about their destinations. She loves bold colors and has a knack for finding remarkable light.

The path Lauren took to be a professional Instagrammer might not surprise you… She worked her butt off and diligently pursued her goals. What MAY surprise you is her photography background. I won’t spoil the podcast for you, but I was blown away when she told me how she ended up where she is.

I hope you enjoy the interview. I found Lauren’s story fascinating. Be sure to check out her Instagram feed if you haven’t by now. See what 390k followers and 5k-10k likes per photo looks like!

Your Itinerary 22: See the World with David duChemin

See the World with David duChemin
There's a process I go through for the interviews on Your Itinerary. I usually start with my guests’ website. I read their bio and look through their portfolio to learn about the guest and decide how I want their interview to go.

This week was a little different. I was really excited to talk with David duChemin right out of the gate, and I knew I wanted to talk about his latest ebook, See the World. I have followed David’s work for quite a while, and I was already reading See the World when I was able to schedule some time to chat with him.

David’s book Within the Frame, The Journey of Photographic Vision caused quite a stir when it came out in 2009. There were (and are) tons of books about the technical photographic process. I think Within the Frame struck a chord because it goes beyond the “how” to discuss inspiration and vision, and it does so in a way that makes you feel like you’ve had a conversation with a friend.

Traveling photographers, See the World is right up our alley. If you’re looking for ways to improve your travel photography, this is a no-brainer. If you are an educator who wants to start a conversation with your students about travel photography, this is required reading.

I’ll stop gushing and let you get to the interview! David has generously offered a discount on See the World to our listeners. Follow the link below to Craft&Vision and use the discount code “TWiP25” to save 25% off the regular price. The discount is good through April 1, so go get it now!

Your Itinerary 21: World Digiscopers Meeting

The first World Digiscopers Meeting.
L-R: Jerry Jourdan, Danny Porter, Justin Carr, Robert Wilson

I was privileged to meet digiscopers from around the world in Titusville, FL last January. The first World Digiscopers Meeting was organized during the Space Coast Birding festival. The event was an opportunity for a lot of folks who knew each other online to meet in person for the first time.

That’s where my guests come in… Robert Wilson is a retired commercial photographer who lives in Florida. He was one of the main catalysts for the digiscoping event. Most people I spoke to during the event gave Robert credit for getting getting everyone together.

Justin Carr is a birder and digiscoper from the U.K. As you’ll hear in the interview, he was digiscoping long before the current high-tech gear we have today. He shot the butterfly image below using his LUMIX GH3 and a pair of binoculars!

Danny Porter is also from the U.K. He’s a digiscoping consultant for Swarovski Optik and the man behind the popular Danny’s Digiscoping blog. His blog provides digiscoping tips, product reviews and lots of great photos.

These three photographers became friends through Facebook. Their experience is a great example of how social media can translate into meaningful connections in the real world as well. I had a lot of fun with the digiscopers I met during the festival and I hope you enjoy the interview.

Hopefully I’ll actually get to shoot with these talented gents the next time our paths cross.

Your Itinerary 20: New Rules for U.S. to Cuba Travel

Doug Kaye Talks about the new regulations for U.S. travelers to Cuba.
Doug Kaye

I’m sure you know my guest on this week’s episode of Your Itinerary. Doug Kaye is the host of All About the Gear and a frequent guest host on This Week in Photo.

Doug recently returned from his third photo excursion to Cuba. In fact his flight was the first one to land in Cuba under the new travel regulations! I interviewed Doug about the new regulations for U.S. to Cuba travel and how they might affect photographers.

We also discuss photo travel to Cuba in general. Photographers from the U.S. have romantic ideas about this island nation. Visions of classic cars and timeless street scenes are made more exotic by the fact that we aren’t really supposed to be there.

Cuba is just another island vacation spot to visitors from outside of the United States. Doug and I discuss what the big deal is, and whether a visit to Cuba is worth the extra effort from the U.S.

After our interview I am definitely more intrigued about visiting Cuba. With the new more relaxed regulations I think a lot more Americans will get to see what all the fuss is about. Be sure to check out Doug's links below to see his images from Cuba and his upcoming workshops.
